My friend, Erin, over at The Humbled Homemaker has a great post up on how to enjoy read-aloud books with your kids despite a busy schedule.

We love books on CD for the car but now that my daughter is older (age 8), this is also a great time for her to read aloud to me. Once a week she has a lesson that is a 30 minute drive. On the way there, when she is fresh, she ready out loud to me. And on the way home, she reads to herself. I stopped keeping “toys” or electronics in the car and now I only keep for her books and a notebook that she can write in. It’s never a challenge to choose between electronics and something healthier because electronics are just not an option in the car. We have made this change now for years and she avidly enjoys books. It’s also a good time for her to give me an oral book report chapter by chapter. It feels like I am making good use of normally wasted time.

Also, we love our local library’s Playaways – http://www.playaway.com – which each feature a separate book. I hadn’t tried them until recently, but my 7-year-old loves them. Just add a battery and child-safe headphones and your child can listen the selected book anywhere.

I know an “app can’t replace your lap”, but the Tales2Go app is amazing! Our kids love being able to listen to a story at any time, and I love that you can search by age or grade.

Thanks for the app rec! I will have to check it out! We also love the Sparkle Stories podcast, which is an alternative to a long audio book!
