This recipe for Homemade Lavender Bath Salts has been on my list of do-it-yourself ideas I want to try for a few months. After making them yesterday, I can’t believe I waited this long to try it.
This recipe is SO easy and fun to make and you could try using different essential oils and food coloring colors to change things up.
Homemade Lavender Bath Salts
- 1 cup Epsom salt
- 1/2 cup sea salt
- 10 to 15 drops of lavender essential oil
- 4-8 drops food coloring, optional (I used blue.)
In a mixing bowl, stir together all ingredients until well blended. Transfer to an airtight container and let rest for a few days to give time for the oil to infuse the salts.
To use: Add 4 to 6 Tablespoons of Lavender Bath Salt to warm running bath water. Enjoy a refreshing and relaxing bath soak!

I made a few of these for christmas presents this year they came out really nice, so today i finally got to use mine nice smell looks good, but then i looked at my hands and legs they were purple lol from the food coloring. i grabbed the brush and soap and scrubbed it off some came off my legs were a little purple. not sure why this happened.
Just made using like Nedie did using Young Living Essential Oil which I feel is better quality oil than many I’ve used in the past. I used 30 gifts, but with oil probably could of used less.???
I use Young Living Essential Oils every day. They are great for smelling good and making stuff. I diffuse oils to de-stress and I put the citrus oils in my water. Super yummy!!
What’s the shelf life on the salts
If you are hesitant about using lavender, try this one:
Breathe Easier Synergy Blend Essential Oil by Edens Garden (Peppermint, Rosemary, Lemon & Eucalyptus)- 10 ml
Sold by: Edens Garden
$4.95 on Amazon.
Shipping is extra, this is a really lovely blend, and by far my favorite so far!!
I’ve read several of these types of comments and several have asked how much should you use in the bath?
What quantity does this recipe make? I’m thinking making gifts so just trying to guesstimate how much product to buy to make it……
Can I use something else instead of the sea salt?? Don’t have any!
I think you could use regular salt.
I made a similar version as thank you gifts for the hosts of my bridal shower. I used peppermint oil instead of lavender and colored them mint (since my theme was “mint to be”) and put them in pretty glass bottles with corks I got at Michaels for $1. I filled up gift bags with the bath salts and other shower/spa related items and wrote on the gift tags “from my shower to yours”. I also made a homemade sugar scrub using 2in1 shampoo/conditioner and salt. Super easy!
I like the addition of sea salt – I may have to add that to my version!
Made these bath salts today!! Turned out great! I don’t know if I can wait the couple days to use them! Thanks for posting!!
🙂 I was thinking the same thing after I made them!
To “pretty it up” a bit (ie, for gift giving), I will mix in a few tablespoons of dried lavender flowers to this recipe and put the whole mix into a bath sachet. Fun, homemade, frugal gift!
Should clarify…put the whole mix in several bath sachets…can’t fit it all in one! 😉
What is a bath sachet?

I use these, either the 2×3 size or the 3×4 size, whichever you prefer.
Is this fairly moisturizing since it has the oil? I currently use Calgon lavender bath salts but at $4 a jar, I’d love to save some money there!
Quick question…I love lavender and the idea of making something (even as gifts). I was just wondering is this really cost effective since essential oils can be expensive. Even if you made several “recipes” from the little bottle, would it not be cheaper to get this at a place like Dollar Tree?
I’m not sure how many drops are in a bottle, but it should be a LOT since it only requires a few drops per recipe. I’m also guessing that the dollar store bath salts have a lot of chemicals in them (have never looked at the ingredients, so I could be wrong).
That said, I think you’re wise to consider your time and effort and whether doing something like this is worth it for the savings — especially if trying something like this doesn’t look fun to you (like it did to me!).
it does look like fun actually–used to do all this before kids came around. Just curious, because I used to try all sorts of things like this and often found them to be worth it for entertainment value for me but not for actual product value.
Hi Margaret, I use doterra regularly and a 5ML bottle has about 80 drops; a 15ML bottle has about 250. So it goes a long way!
One other thing – a large bag of epsom salts sets me back about $4 – and I think that is 2 lbs worth.
thanks for the numbers.
Sara,
A good quality, all natural, non synthetic essential oil will not cause these estrogenic issues. You may want to check out this: http://roberttisserand.com/2013/02/lavender-oil-is-not-estrogenic/
where did you get the lavendar oil from?
You can get it from various places — Walmart, a health food store, or online (Vitacost, Amazon, etc.).
lorrann oils are nice , they are food grade and are a pure oil, much less expensive then some of the multi level marketing sold oils like doterra and young living oils… and you can also get bulk bags of Epson salts at farm stores. cost about 1/4 of the price buying in bulk. example 50 lbs of salts cost $13 & 1oz of oils runs about $6 . needless to say thats a lot of baths worth and some to share ! good luck 😉
I just read great reviews on their oils. I think I will use these so I have bath oils and food oils. Who knew?
I use Young Living Essential Oils every day. They are not only great for smelling good and making bath stuff. I diffuse oils to de-stress and I put the citrus oils in my water. They are so great for a million reasons.
I just bought Epsom salts tonight to mix with lavender essential oil. I was getting ready to research a recipe-perfect timing! Thank you!
And its perfect for strained backs and muscles. Epsom salt is frequently recommended by healthcare workers for people with muscle disorders.
Thank you for sharing! I’m thinking this would make a great gift for some of my friends! I’m excited to try it out!
Could you use baby oil?
Hi Carla, I’m a cosmetic chemist and baby oil is just mineral oil so it really won’t be beneficial in the small amounts used. Plus if you use too much, you would see oil droplets in your bathwater–like salad dressing. HTH
Does the food coloring change the color of the bath water?
Yes but you also run the risk of it staining your tub.
I had that happen with a store-bought blend!
I use soap coloring instead of food coloring. Works better for me, and I haven’t had any issues with staining.
Thanks so much for this tip!
Oh, I have got to try this soon. I wasn’t expecting the directions to be so easy!
I would LOVE to try this since relaxing in a warm bath with salts is my favorite way to unwind. I’m a bit of a novice to oils, but I’ve read varying things about lavender…mostly that it can cause early puberty in girls. Since we share a bathroom with the kids, do any of the oil experts out there know if I’d need to worry about cleaning the tub every time after I use something with lavender oil so my 5 year old daughter isn’t exposed to it?
I’ve read that lavender CAN disrupt your hormonal balance. I used to use lavender as a muscle relaxer/rub, but quickly developed ovarian cysts. I’d use caution using it at all, much less with a young child.
