Even simpler: put vinegar and a drop of dish soap in a bowl. The vinegar attracts the fruit flies, the dish soap breaks the surface tension so the flies fall into the vinegar instead of resting on top of it. I use red wine vinegar in a small glass bowl because it’s pretty.

Does this work for regular houseflies?

I’ve used just a shallow dish with the apple cider vinegar, dish soap & water sprayed to make it frothy. A few regular flies have ended up in it, but they don’t seem as attracted to it as the fruit flies.

How ingenious!

Another method that works great is to take a shallow dish and put some red wine in it along with a few drops of dish soap and a little water. Put saran wrap over top and poke some holes in it so they can fly in. Worked wonders for my kitchen last year. I haven’t had a problem this year so far.

I make mine the same way – only with a half pint canning jar. It takes up less counter space than a dish, and then it’s easy to secure the saran wrap to the rim with a rubber band. I also typically use apple cider vinegar and only add red wine if I have it on hand. Works every time.
