Ever since watching Carrie’s video on making Homemade Marshmallows, I’ve wanted to give it a try myself.
And I finally did in December.
I used this recipe on Smitten Kitchen and found the step-by-step photos extremely helpful. I also found that my KitchenAid from my grandma was a huge help, too. In fact, I thought the recipe was quite easy to make, but I think it would have been a lot more time-consuming without the KitchenAid.
The end result was delicious homemade marshmallows that my whole family oohed and ahhed over.
They weren’t necessarily money-saving or time-saving to make, but I think they’d make a very fun and unique gift–especially when paired with a homemade hot cocoa mix.
Next time, I want to try making these Chocolate Dipped Marshmallows.
Up tomorrow: The long-awaited details on my Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day experiment.
Is there a recipe for homemade marshmellows that are corn free? I’d love to make some for my daughters who can’t have corn or wheat.
I LOOOOOVE homemade marshmallows. I think I made 3 batches over the holidays. (Because I kept eating the ones I was supposed to be giving away!) Unfortunately, they don’t roast particularly well, but they are so good in hot cocoa or even just plain.
I love making marshmallows! One tip I found: When you spray the pan to prevent the marshmallow goo from sticking, DON’T USE BUTTER FLAVORED SPRAY. It tastes so weird! Plain oil or spray tastes way better.
I made homemade marshmallows (w/ gelatine, no egg whites) for Christmas and they were a big hit. I used a large pastry bag an piped them onto wax paper and they were pretty and it was much easier then cutting them with kitchen sheers.
Yum! These look so creative and fun!
And like you mentioned, what a fun Christmas present for next year when paired with some fun, exotic cocoa mixes!
Thanks for sharing!
LOVE the mug! That’s one of my favorite colors!! 🙂 (The marshmallows look great too :)!! )
I made the chocolate peppermint dipped ones with some of the ladies in the young adults class from church for Christmas gifts and everyone seemed to really like them. We also made some dipped only in peppermint to add to hot chocolate or coffee. To make those, we just made a very thin glaze to dip the marshmallows in first so the peppermint would stick. Those were nice because I could still have them with my milk allergy.
I follow the recipe of Gale Gand for homemade marshmallows. Super easy and they’re so delicious 🙂
Got some as a teacher gift with graham crackers and mini Hershey’s bars to make s’mores on a divided Christmas tray. MELT IN YOUR MOUTH!!
Wow!! I am going to try this out!!! Thanks for the temptation ha!
Great Job! They look very nice and yummy.
I love those marshmallows! I made them after you originally posted the link to the “how to” and I think I made them for 2 months straight! I couldn’t get enough of them… ummm, I mean my kids couldn’t get enough of them! 🙂
I couldn’t decide which I liked better, the coconut or peppermint!
These look so awesome! I totally am going to try this!
What a yummy idea! I need to go make a note of this in my Christmas Idea file.
BTW, is that mug from Target? I have one in black and I really like the way it feels in the hand. Maybe I should put away the Christmas mugs and get the regular ones back our, eh? Last year I think I did that in early March. 🙂
Yes, someone gave it to me as a gift and I absolutely love it.
I honestly have never thought about making homemade marshmallows. Very interesting! Definitely plan to try this.
We make the chocolate covered marshmellows frequently and rather than peppermint we top with holiday themed sprinkles (my son is a HUGE fan of sprinkles!) They are really attactive and make a great treat to give to others or add to a cookie plate—and they are quite economical too! Seeing the peppermint ones make me wonder how they would taste with nut topping?? Has anyone tried this?
Nuts are a very good topping
In my family, it’s tradition to roll the cut marshmallows in chopped peanuts (dry roasted chopped in the food processor or blender work best)
I’ve also tried dried coconut, which is really yummy, especially if the marshmallows are made with pineapple juice
Do you have to put anything on the outside to make the toppings stick or are they sticky enough already?
My mother can remember her grandmother making homemade marshmallows for Christmas. They would be put in shirt boxes line with tissue and given as present.
We made homemade marshmallows in December and I still need to post about it too. The recipe I adapted didn’t use any egg whites and we made them peppermint. Just a couple made homemade hot cocoa perfectly minty.
These are money saving here as marshmallows are expensive in China because they are all imported.
I think they would be much trouble at all with a stand mixer, but we got decent results with just an old fashioned hand crank mixer. It did take about a half an hour just to whip this way and my husband had to crank at the end because I was getting tired and it gets so thick. I do think they would be much easier even with a regular electric handheld mixer and maybe even a little fluffier than ours. However, they still tasted great, it was a fun family project, and even my husband wants to make them again.
I need to put up our recipe and process soon. Thanks for sharing how yours went! I am sure it was a really special treat for you kids.
I made homemade marshmallows at Christmas for a neat idea my daughter found online called “hot chocolate on a stick.” I thought they were so much better than store bought and quite easy to make. I would like to make them to keep on hand instead of buying them, so need to get on the ball and make some more!
We’ve done this and they last a long time.
We received those for Christmas from a neighbor and loved them! They were beautiful and tasty, too.
We made homemade marshmallows a few weeks ago also. Loved them! They melted so smoothly in cups of hot cocoa.
We made peppermint marshmallows lately, and they were yummy…though a bit too pepperminty (I just guesstimated on the essential oil and went a bit overboard!) It is fun to make these from scratch, though, and several people couldn’t believe they were homemade.:)
I love making homemade chocolate covered marshmellow eggs for Easter.
I use a recipe with unflavored gelatin so no egg whites.
Well Done, Crystal! Do you have a favorite recipe for homemade cocoa? You are right, this would me a great gift! Thanks for sharing!
We love homemade marshmallows! They are the best.
I make the Artisan bread in five minutes a day all the time!!! It is delish, especially if you like sourdough bread. They say you can leave the dough in the fridge for up to two weeks although mine never lasted that long, I have left it in the fridge up to six days.
The first time I made it I found it too salty so I cut back on the Salt by half and enjoyed it so much better! Hope you enjoy it!
Ditto on the saltiness. I also find that cutting the salt in half makes for much better flavor.
There is absolutely nothing like a homemade marshmallow. Store bought doesn’t even hold a candle, and they really are not as hard to make as one would guess! Nice work!
I like how you captured the reflection of the napkin in the mug. Great job on your photo! 🙂
Just read the recipe… just a heads up if you use egg whites, you should use the ones from the carton because they’ve been pasteurized. If you use egg whites from eggs, you run the risk of salmonella poisoning.
I never even THOUGHT about making my own marshmallows!
BTW, I love, love, LOVE Artisan bread in 5 minutes a day! Yum. In fact..may just have to mix some up this weekend for next week! Anxious to hear which recipe you tried.
So did they taste different than store bought?
Better and fresher!
We gave homemade marshmallows to family for Christmas last year and my brother-in-law kept saying they tasted so “pure” and “clean.” They really do taste MUCH better than store bought (plus, they melt beautifully in hot cocoa!) whereas store-bought hold their shape.
Oooh, I’ve wanted to try making marshmallows for a long time – especially since I found out that they don’t require eggs – the noisy Kitchen Aid scares the little guy though, I’ll have to do it when he’s out with Daddy 🙂
