HAS ANYONE TRIED THE GROUND PORK? I’VE SEEN IT IN THE GROCERY STORE AND I WAS JUST WONDERING IF IT WOULD BE AN OPTION. YOU CAN GET THAT HERE AT OUR GROCERY STORE FOR $ 1.99 A POUND…..
I have mixed it in the past with ground beef with good results for things like meatloaf, chili, etc.
I love making breakfast sausage out of ground turkey. I am not a big fan of grease in the morning and this is a great solution!
Good idea! Thank you!
My husband is VERY picky but I’ve been buying ground turkey instead of beef for the last couple years and he hasn’t complained once. I don’t use it for burgers though but tacos, spaghetti, sloppy joes, etc. it has been fine. I actually found some ground beef on sale last month and when I used it he complained because it was too greasy (90/10), so back to the turkey I went and save the beef for burgers
Wow! Great to hear!!!
Really dumb question I’m sure, but is your family OK with drinking water all the time? We’re just a family of 3 and my husband alone can drink 2 gallons of milk a week. 🙁 I looked at this and wondered what you do about those things in regards to your hubby and littles.
They are, but only because it is all they have ever known. 🙂 My children are all BIG, but if I was dealing with scrawny, underweight kiddos, I might have to rethink my “water only” frugal plan. 🙂 I think you have to do what works for YOUR family!
Wow… wish we had Harris Teeter. I would love those super doubles!
I know. I almost feel guilty!!
I was wondering how you “double” coupons to get free items! Is that a store policy? Most coupons I clip from Red Plum and such say coupon can not be doubled. We also don’t have Harris Teeter in my area (western Chicago suburbs). I mostly shop at Aldi, Target, Costco, and Walmart.
Harris Teeter regularly doubles coupons up to 99 cents. This week they are having “super doubles” which doubles any coupon up to $2. They do this about once per quarter. However, if the coupon says “do not double” it generally won’t. I had a couple of mine that didn’t and I was bummed that I hadn’t noticed the wording.
So crazy how milk prices vary. Our Aldi is $1.89 and has been for awhile, the cashier told me that they price to beat the best prices at nearby stores. She added that across town, milk is $1.39!!!! That is so crazy!! So, for anyone near Springfield, IL, milk is $1.39 and eggs are supposedly $0.69 at the Aldi on the north side of town. (Per cashier, they are priced to beat Ruler Foods)
Wow, those are great prices. Sadly, I don’t have an Aldi so I usually buy my milk at drug stores. CVS has has it for $3.79 and get $1 ECB or I get it for $2.99 elsewhere. I hate our regular prices of close to $4. I buy about 8 dozen eggs when they go on sale for $.99-$1.49 so I make it to the next sale cycle.
Those are FANTASTIC prices!!!

My fav recipe that I use the Aldi’s turkey for, a staple around our house.
Yum! Thanks!
You do not need to justify your creamer! If you like it, then you like it
… and should enjoy it! Sorry, it cut my comment off 🙂
🙂
I used to buy frozen ground turkey all the time, but then I kept finding windpipe pieces and got totally grossed out. : ( Made me wonder…what other turkey parts do they grind(or try to grind!) and put in here?!
No, it was not from Aldi. Just the cheapest at my grocery. Hopefully Aldi’s is better than that!! I have since bought fresh ground turkey and been pleased, but I can get beef for not much more.
That is soooo awful!!! Those are the kinds of things I think about too. 🙂
Well, we practically live off ground turkey. Lol. I don’t buy ground beef at all, and I don’t expect it to taste like beef. We like it for what it is. I like to mash black beans or kidney beans into it to stretch it. In my opinion, it does need seasoning or it’s pretty bland. My husband is quite the carnivore and he happily eats it.
That gives me hope my husband will like the ground turkey. 🙂
I have 40 lbs. (Aldi ~ one pound ground turkey) in my big freezer right now. We use it for sloppy Kates (yes instead of joes, we call them this because our little one at the time was a complete mess after eating them, 18 years ago), chili, soups, meatloaf, hamburgers, and more. I get super excited to see your shopping trips, but there is a lot of processed foods (lots of sodium, etc) in them and we just don’t eat like that anymore. I used to coupon all the time, literally, and would make my menu around sale ads and coupons. Then coupon policies started changing here and we were cooking more and more from scratch and there aren’t a lot of coupons out there for healthy items, so I hardly use them anymore and I don’t have a smart phone to use for extra deals. We mainly shop at Aldi and absolutely think they can’t be beat with their prices and I love your Aldi trips and menu ideas. 🙂
You are right about the processed foods – especially on a super doubles week. My husband uses most of the things for lunches (soups, noodles) that he takes to work. I would LOVE to eliminate everything processed…hopefully someday. 🙂 Right now I just try to do the best I can with our budget (my husband spent the last 1.5 years without a job) and time constraints – plus my husband is a total junk food kind of guy. The harder I work at getting the bad stuff out of the house, the more he brings it back in. Good thing I love him so much! 🙂
Yeah, I still coupon for the really good deals that my family love… Cereal, granola/fiber bars, soups, instant potatoes, pasta, sauce, etc., but I wait for a sale and don’t buy it otherwise. The majority of my purchases are produce, dairy, and meat. We eat a lot less processed food since my Kroger stopped doubling coupons. My husband loves soda so I do shop around for that and stock up when it’s cheap.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much my family and I liked the ground turkey. I get the lean Foster Farms brand at Costco. I cook it in a big cast iron skillet and flavor it with chopped onion, chili powder, cumin, salt and pepper. I sauté the onions with the spices for a minute or two to toast the spices, and then add the turkey. I let it brown fully and then continue to simmer to boil off the liquid. It is so lean there really isn’t any fat to drain. The spices oddly enough make it taste like beef! It is great warm on a salad (taco salad). Great for low carb diets!
Yum!! We LOVE taco salad, so I will definitely be trying the ground turkey in it this week.
I would love it if our produce was that inexpensive….not in the PNW…
I love the turkey, we use half beef half turkey. I use it in chili, soups, tacos, meatloaf. Makes it alot cheaper than beef alone.
Oh yay! So good to hear that others like it. 🙂
I use the ground turkey from Aldi all the time and think it is pretty good stuff, especially for the price! Our favorite is taco meat – I brown a pound of turkey and then add a pint of black beans and a 1-cup batch of brown rice, cooked, and then season the whole thing generously with homemade taco seasoning. It makes enough for three meals and I freeze the two extras in quart freezer bags. Not only is it a cheap way to stretch the meat, it is full of fiber, too – and my family loves it!
This is great to hear! I am ALL about stretching meat! 🙂
Was there something wrong with the ground turkey? You said it will probably be the last time you buy it. I usually mix it with ground beef for casseroles, soups, & taco meat.
I do this as well. I buy the tubes of ground beef, and then, having a family of 6 like Brigette, and needing leftovers for my husband’s lunches, I mix one pound of each for my recipes. The turkey is dry as turkey usually is, and the ground beef is really fatty, so they complement each other *very* nicely. If I don’t need the full 2 pounds, I just set some of the browned meat aside in the fridge for another meal.
My picky husband and kids can’t even tell the difference, though I don’t know if I’d do it where the ground beef/turkey flavor would be very obvious, like in hamburgers. It wouldn’t bother me, but again, the husband…;)
Nothing wrong with it – I just am leery of anything that cheap, comparatively, and figured it will not go over well with my husband. 🙂 BUT, it is great to hear that some of you use it! I have mixed ground turkey with ground beef in the past, but never the Aldi brand.
Good for you, Brigette! When I needed ground turkey right away, I got some at Aldi, and we found several pieces of bone in it. Trader Joe’s ground turkey is much better!
I just cleaned out the freezer because we will be picking our venison tonight and I came across a bag of frozen mangos and was trying to think of some way to use them up. I will try the oatmeal idea ! Thanks and good luck on your upcoming marathon and a good hunting season for your husband.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing! I am all about stretching meat. 🙂
Oops. That previous comment was for someone else! I hope your kiddos like the mangos! 🙂
