Lunches
Luncheon at church – I am bringing Panera Broccoli Cheese Soup (I will sub out the flour to make it gluten-free), Cheese Quesadillas/Apples/Carrots, Baked Potatoes with Cheese/Steamed Peas, Build-Your-Own-Tossed-Salad Bar, Leftovers x 2, Bagel Bites/Apples/Cucumbers

Barbecue at Church – I am bringing President Reagan’s Favorite Macaroni and Cheese
Burritos (Chicken/Beans/Rice/Cheese/Lettuce), Roasted Cauliflower

Meat Potato Quiche, Tossed Salad
Leftovers
Maybe I missed it bout how will you use the spaghetti squash?
I would like to thank you for mentioning using venison in your weekly meal plan. We use it all the time.
I love reading your weekly meal plan and always get inspired. However, I feel that you never have any snacks or drinks mentioned ever! Does your family not eat snacks? Do you only drink water? Just curious 🙂
I rarely “plan” snacks (although I did the previous couple of weeks). I sometimes give my children an afternoon snack, and sometimes Dad will give them a bedtime snack. It is usually fresh fruit, or popcorn, or something I baked spur-of-the-moment (that incorporates standard pantry staples – cookies, granola bars, muffins, etc.). And yes, we drink water. 🙂 I do hot tea (which my friends/family buy me as gifts, or I get for really cheap around the holidays and stock up for the rest of the year), we keep coffee in the house for guests, and cans of OJ concentrate in the freezer for Saturday mornings breakfasts. We buy milk, but normally just use it on our cereal and in baking. I often add fresh squeezed lemon juice and stevia to my water for variety. We all LIKE other things, but find if I don’t have it in the house – we drink a lot of water (which is cheaper and better for us :)). If I had super skinny children who were picky eaters and I was dealing with getting enough calories in them – I would probably rethink this. 🙂 My children are huge eaters, highly active, and are healthy, BIG kiddos!
College gal.How about packets of instant oatmeal? walmart.com sells variety packs, organic with flaxseed etc. They also sell dehydrated fruit, apples berries etc. These would be great to cut up(scissors) and throw in the oatmeal. They also taste great on their own.If you add a little crushed walnuts or almonds on the top of hot cereal…..well you have a complete deal. She just needs hot water and some paper bowls, plastic spoons. There must be a grocery store near the campus where she can buy a few apples, oranges every week. there are also v-8 juice, vegetable drink boxes and protein drinks like smart calorie boost, or Atkins. I had a daughter in college a few years ago. Oh yeah! special K has a high protein cereal, 10 grams a serving, good alternative snack right out of the box .Good luck.
You did great. I haven’t added up my receipts yet, but I think I came in close to budget…maybe even a few dollars under. 🙂 I stocked up on dairy, produce, and meat at Kroger… 8 dozen eggs, 2 packs of cheese, cottage cheese, 2 gallons of milk, boneless chicken breast and boneless pork loin (both $1.99 lb and a $2/$10 fresh meat ecoupon), a bag of frozen chicken wings ($1.50 ecoupon and sale), pepperoni, pears, apples, bananas, ketchup, bbq sauce, instant potatoes (freebie), my son’s otc, meds, and a trip to CVS. I bought 4 Huggies and paid $19 with tax (4x$3 coupon, $2 ecb, and $5 cvs swagbucks gc) and got a $10 gift card back. I will finalize a menu tomorrow, but I already made a batch of BBQ baked beans (3 meals), and plan to make pizza and spaghetti pie tomorrow which will yield several meals for the upcoming weeks. I love doubling or tripling meals or sides that freeze well to make week nights easier.
Wow! Go you!! It sounds like you did great! 🙂
just wanted to mention your first and third pictures are the same 🙂 thought you might want to fix it. thanks for the post!
Um, whoops! That’s totally my fault! Brigette had uploaded the pictures but they were showing up too small… so I re-uploaded them and clearly was doing too much multi-tasking while doing so! I’ve fixed it now. Thanks so much for catching that. I need to go find my brain!
With all the great deals out there I am wondering if anyone can help with ideas for non refrigerated healthy items I can send to my GD’s. Their sorority serves almost all white carbs with an occasional salad…very little protein or fruit. Since they are not allowed to have a frig in the rooms or able to use the kitchens frig, they are pretty stuck. I thought of the applesauce cups and cups of that nature, but need stuff with some protein beside nuts/peanut butter. thank you for any ideas????????
The easiest and first thing I thought of is dried fruit and/or trail mix.
Some fruits (bananas, apples, pears, oranges come to mind) don’t require refrigeration. Perhaps you could send a fruit bowl?
Does she happen to have access to a microwave (even though not the refrigerator)? There are some semi-healthy things available that way, but they are fairly expensive per serving.
Maybe protein bars? I never pay for them, but if I were in that situation I would consider them. I see them on sale for $1 per bar and a lot of times there are coupons available so they are closer to $0-0.60 per bar. Boxes may be cheaper. I’m sure if you look for a coupon blog that covers stores in your area, you could find a deal. Drug stores often have sales, too. Kroger offers different bars as their free Friday ecoupon every so often and I get them then. They’re just okay in my opinion. Maybe you could make some protein bars or protein cookies cheaper, and tastier, than that. I’d google some recipes and see. I love the fruit bowl idea someone mentioned. It all is better than the canned spaghetti and ramen I lived off in college. 🙂
I don’t have food suggestions, but she should look into getting her sorority to serve healthier foods. There is probably a kitchen manager officer who coordinates with the cook. Or she could talk to the house mom or chapter advisors. She’s probably not the only one wanting healthier options. That really surprises me because my sorority had very healthy food. We also had a fridge girls could keep small items in (leftovers from restaurants, etc.)
Thank you for suggestions and if any more come to mind please send them along. All 3 GD belong to the same sorority and the oldest was the groups liason between dept heads and she tried for 2 years straight to get better food. I guess minimal improvements were made, but claim without charging more they are doing their best. You would think a school in the big 10 would consider health a bigger priority. The cafeteria serves better food but would pay double then since they must pay for meals at the sorority.
Haha I love the Reagan Mac & Cheese! Going to have to give that a try sometime!
Thanks for sharing your menu plan/shopping list! I love that bloggers share realistic couponing ideas and money saving tips for healthy foods, unlike those crazy shows where they show you how they get all kinds of junk food for $5! Y’all are so practical and do-able! Thank you for sharing this!
Kate
What’s this? I had no idea President Reagan had a favorite macaroni and cheese! I must try it. And thanks for posting that Panera broccoli and cheese soup recipe. I’d been meaning to hunt for it. 🙂
I pretty much love any kind of Mac and cheese. This particular recipe is the one my mother-in-law always makes, and it is really good. It is rich and cheesy, but not a “saucy”/wet Mac and cheese.
