I feel like I’ve not been reading at all as much as I’d love to be reading, but I’m grateful that I’m slowly making headway through books… I just have so many more that I want to read!! 🙂 Can anyone relate?!
Here’s to hoping my renewed commitment to order and discipline now that we’re all moved and mostly settled in will give me time to fit in more reading!
7 Books I Read in May
- Secrets of Dynamic Communication
- The Busy Homeschool Mom’s Guide to Daylight
- Red Hot Monogamy
- Chasing Francis
- In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day
- Beating Burnout: A 30-Day Guide to Hope and Health
- The Challenge for Lazy Wives
My Top Three Favorites:
Secrets of Dynamic Communication — If you are an author or a speaker (or you hope to become one!), I can’t recommend this well-written book highly enough. Ken Davis is a dynamic speaker with years of experience and he’s a goldmine of wisdom. By following the things I’ve learned from him, I’ve become a much more effective and engaging communicator.
Chasing Francis — I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book, but the title and description intrigued me and it was endorsed by Mark Batterson (an author I love!), so I read it. And I’m so very grateful I did because it messed with me in a very good way. It challenged me to step back and really examine my beliefs and how I’m living out those beliefs.
In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day — Since I’ve loved the other Mark Batterson books I’ve read, I picked up this title based upon his name alone. And it turned out to be the best book I’ve read in a long time. In fact, if you’ve spent any time with me in the past three months, you’ve probably heard me talk about it. If you are struggling with direction, wondering what your purpose in life is, and questioning what you were created for, do yourself a favor and read this book. You just might not be the same ever again!
What books did you read in May? Which were your favorites? Any recommendations for me?
I am reading Mark Batterson’s All In and oh…amazing!
I want to read that one!
I saw the book “The Traitor’s Wife” in your picture. Did you read that? I just read that a few weeks ago and loved it and have already passed it on!
If you did, let me know what you thought of it.
I’m hoping to read it this week!
Wondered if anyone had suggestions for a book on mothers raising sons, not necessarily from a Bible stand point. There are too many on the market to choose.
Why Men Hate Going To Church by David Murrow. Some very good insights and challenges for the reasons of the ever changing and diminishing landscape of the organized church.
I finished reading Hope Rising by Scott Todd, which I really enjoyed! Right now, I am almost done with Rhinestone Jesus by Kristen Welch.
Rhinestone Jesus is on my June list — I can’t wait to read it!
I love these books! I need a complete habit overhaul and I need to get back to reading everyday.
I’ve let the excuse of time get in my way, but the truth is, it is just me not doing a very good job of managing my time. I’ve always loved following your blog and getting updates from you. Thanks for sharing!
“I’ve let the excuse of time get in my way, but the truth is, it is just me not doing a very good job of managing my time.”
THIS is so true. And something I need to remind myself often of.
I read some GREAT books this month. I highly recommend Hands Free Mama – a book I really enjoyed last month. Here are my others: http://behealthybehappywellness.com/2014/05/looking-for-summer-reading-suggestions/
I LOVED Hands Free Mama and have a full review/giveaway of it coming — hopefully soon!
I just finished reading “In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day” too (because of it bein on your list). It was a fabulous book, and I read it at the perfect time in my life. It challenged me and encouraged me. Thanks for your book lists. I am slowly working through your recommendations. And, as a side note, I love the changes you have made to your blog. It is more like it was when I first subscribed in March of 2009. I think it is great!
Thanks so much for your kind encouragement! And I’m so glad you enjoyed that book!
I loved reading Hands Free Mama in May and am finishing up Restless by Jennie Allen right now! 🙂 Love reading new suggestions for books!
Hands Free Mama was SO good… truly impacted me in a deep way!
Way to go! I’m impressed that you got through 7 books in a month!
Who is the author of Unstuffed?
My favourite book from May was “The Divine Mentor” by Wayne Cordeiro.
Chasing Francis looks fantastic, I just requested it from the library. You have to read The Opposite of Me by Sarah Pekkanen– it is WONDERFUL!
I am so excited because I have made a commitment to read Gods word for an hour in a half and so far so good! His word has really changed me and also made me hungry for more of Him. I am so excited! I must admit it is hard to read other books because so many times a verse or what I read just makes me ponder over and over. I am striving to be the best servant I can be and do my best not only outside of my home but also inside. Praying as time goes by that I will read even more then that. Also my prayer time is increasing, yay! Thanks for letting me share!
I love this! Thanks for sharing!
Reading has been alot slower lately but hoping it will pick up. I am reading Breathe right now and trying to finish Daring Greatly (which I started months ago) and The Surprising Secrets of Highly Happy Marriages. I’m trying to read the marriage one with my husband so that is taking longer.
But we’ve been doing the Adventure in Oddsey books with the kids at night and are on #3.
I LOVED Daring Greatly and The Surprising Secrets of Highly Happy Marriages!
Unstuffed sounds like a great book, I will have to check that out. I read the Call the Midwife series this past month, love them! But I will warn you there are some very hard stories in there.
Chasing Francis sounds like a good book. I’ll check that one out.
This month I read The Convent and A Life in Balance.
I saw at the beginning of May that you were going to be reading Red Hot Monogamy and was excited to hear your thoughts on it… So what did you think??? 🙂
It didn’t make my Top 3 list, but I enjoyed it and found it inspiring — especially since I think it’s important to invest in your marriage and look for ways to continue to stoke the flames of romance in your relationship as the years go by.
I haven’t had much time for traditional “reading” but my day job allows me to listen to audio books.
Last month I listened to How to Train Your Dragon (to psych myself up for the sequel movie) and a couple of other novels. Wasn’t in the mood for anything “heavy” since I had a high workload last month.
So far this month (all 1 week of it!) I’ve listened to The Pilgrim’s Regress by C. S. Lewis (one of my favorites!) and I’m almost done with This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti (another of my favorites).
I’m not sure what I’ll read next. Guess I’ll have to check the library catalogue and see what’s available.
How do you manage to read so many books per month! I have four kiddos under 5 years old and I can’t even manage to read seven sentences. Great job! 🙂
Repeat after me: audio books are my friends!
I’ve got one very active baby AND a day job. Thank God my library lets me download audio books, or I’d never get anything read. I barely have time for my 10 minute Bible study on the train each morning!
See if your library lets you download audio books, or maybe look into getting an Audible account (my hubby just got one. He seems to be enjoying it).
Um, how do I find time to read?? Well, I don’t have any children under 5, let alone 4 under 5. 🙂 If your kids have semi-clean clothes, love from mom, and food to eat, you’re doing a great job.
Maybe you could read aloud to them for 15 minutes during the day and slowly get through a chapter book together? or listen to audiobooks while you’re driving somewhere or cleaning?
If not, give yourself a heap full of grace and know that someday, your children will be able to help with the cleaning and laundry and be much more independent — giving you a little time to read during the week! 🙂
I read “Born To Win” by Zig Ziglar and loved it, very encouraging. I also read “Unstuffed” and it is probably the third book I have read this year about having less so you can give more. In the book the couple and their daughter move into a travel trailer for 3 months to prove to themselves just how few possessions they really need. I am moving on to reading a few by Lisa Wingate now from her “Tending Roses” series. I love her fiction books, I always end up crying at the end, so much so that everyone in my family now says “oh no grab the tissues mom is reading that lady again!”
Oh, Unstuffed sounds like a book I need to read! Thanks for the recommendation!
