It’s been awhile since I’ve shared a post about the books I’m reading. In all honesty, that was because I was so focused on finishing my own manuscript I didn’t have much extra time to read other people’s books.
And oh how I’ve missed it! It’s been so good to get back to regular reading the past two weeks!
Books I’ve Finished Recently:
Undone: A Story of Making Peace With an Unexpected Life — Ya’ll. Do yourself a massive favor and go pre-order this book. It is SO good. Michele is one of the best communicators I’ve ever known. The way she paints pictures with words moves and inspires me as a writer. But her book is much more than beautiful word pictures; it’s the story of a woman finding hope and peace in the middle of messes, heartaches, and unexpected difficulties in life. Highly recommended.
Addicted to Busy — This wasn’t the best book I’ve ever read on white space and margin, and I sort of struggled through parts of it because it sort of felt like it was dragging on a little slowly (maybe that’s an indication that I’m addicted to busy? That I have a short attention span?? ;)), but overall, it made me think and examine my own life. Some of my thoughts on S-P-A-C-E were the result of things I mulled over after reading this book.
You and Me Forever — I thought this book had some valuable information in it, but honestly, I found it a little scattered in how it was laid out. While I’m not opposed at all to self-publishing a book (as this one was), I felt like it could have benefited from having some more editing for clarity, flow, and to further develop and strengthen the bones of the book. I still feel it’s really worth reading — especially if you want to have your mindset challenged on what constitutes a “Godly marriage”.
Me Before You — This was one of the most heart-breaking, compelling, and thought-provoking books I’ve read in a long time. I thought it was very well-written and found it hard to put down. In fact, I read the entire book in one day! Caveat: This book is not written from a Christian perspective, has quite a bit of language, and the plot line deals with suicide in a very raw form. I didn’t agree with the outcome of the book, but it made me dig deep and think hard… and books that do that are ones I feel are very worth my time.
Grace is Free: One Woman’s Journey from Fundamentalism, to Failure, to Faith — As someone who was deeply involved in what many would term “the fundamentalist movement” for a number of years of my life, I found this book’s title intriguing. One of our elder’s wives from our church in Kansas recommended it to me and I found it insightful, thought-provoking, and encouraging as I’m on a journey to walk by faith and live a live steeped in grace instead of being a performer, perfectionist, and people-pleaser.
Books I Hope to Finish This Week
I Thought It Was Just Me (But It Isn’t) — I’m really digging into this right now after setting it aside for a few weeks. Such thought-provoking stuff in it!
A Proper Pursuit — I finally started reading this one! It’s been on my to-read stack what feels like forever! I’m about eight chapters in and enjoying it.
The Best Yes — I’m working through this as part of my morning devotions and really finding it helpful as I think through my priorities and goals for 2014.
And maybe I’ll read a few others, too. We’ll see!
What have you read recently? What are you planning to read this week? Any good book recommendations for me?

Glad you liked my book. Thanks for encouraging post. 🙂
One of my goals for 2015, actually starting after Christmas, is going to be reading time before bed instead of watching TV. I miss reading. It is hard finding the time with a husband and 3 year old who wants to play. I do read to her A LOT!!!
Allison
Wow! Five of your books are on my 2015 reading list! I can’t wait to start. Keep us updated on what you think!!
I like your book posts and often get suggestions from both the posts and the comments.
Thanks for sharing! I’m always looking for new reading material and these look great. I’m currently reading “Pursue the Intentional Life” (thanks to you 🙂 ). It’s wonderful! I’m also reading “Leading on Empty” and in January, I plan on ordering “Living Well, Spending Less”, “Own Your Life”, and “A Mother’s Heart” from Amazon to name a few. Yes, I’m a bit of a bibliophile 🙂
I just want to say thank you so much for often sharing what books you are reading on your blog. We have very similar taste in many books and I always end up adding a lot of the books that you read to my list of books to read. When I read your short review of Grace is Free I knew I would be splurging to purchase that one! This past month I read: Sweet Sleep (a book on sleep for the breastfeeding family), MakeUp by Michelle Phan (interesting but really rather basic as far as tips go), Beyond the Sling (loved most of it), and the cookbook Skinnytaste (too expensive). Do you have any book suggestions for books that share hair and makeup ideas? 🙂
I NEED some books on hair and makeup ideas… that’s an area I’ve not read much on but really should!
And I’m so glad that you get book ideas from my blog. It makes me so happy to be able to introduce people to books I love!
Just wondering if anyone has a particular bible they recommend? I like the ease of my phone app, but would love to have an actual book, too. Thank you!!
HCSB is a great dynamic translation. It is more accurate than the NIV, but easier to read than the ESV or NASB. You can get it for free on Kindle, too 🙂 It’s really neat because it capitalizes all the pronouns referring to God/Jesus (so He is capitalized, etc) and in the new testament, all OT references are bolded, and it has great, thorough footnotes. I have many translations – but this is a great one that reads easily enough, yet can be used to study as well. (The HCSB study bible is great, too)…and no…I don’t work the for company, LOL, I’m just a Bible collecting junkie – but I justify owning so many since I do read them all 😉
P.S. However if you are looking for a very simple to read translation, go with the updated NLT – stay away from ‘the message’. It’s a paraphrase – NOT a translation (the author even states that in the actual book, I’m not nitpicking, here), and is done by one person vs. many translators – so it’s slanted to one man’s view & should only be read as a “commentary” if at all.
Ah, long-winded me again!
I just noticed you DO want a hard copy. If you go for the NLT, the NLT study bible is excellent. It has great “themes” all through it about all sorts of topics, and the study notes are actually scholarly (although many snub the NLT translation for being too simple).
Unless you’re into really studying hardcore – and then I’d say The New Inductive Study Bible in either version is great.
Soooo..
Easiest – NLT Study Bible
Scholarly & Readable – HCSB Study Bible
Really into Digging Deep – Inductive Study Bible
And…I’ll zip it now. Good luck and God Bless 🙂
Thank you so much, Rose, for your thoughtful reply! I truly appreciate it!
Jamie, I just wanted to add that I LOVE the Douay Rheims Bible. It is certainly “heightened text,” but that has always inspired me to remember that I am kneeling before the throne of the One, my holy and mighty King, Who is worthy of my deepest reverence.
God bless you! 🙂
LOVED Me Before You. I remember reading it at my in-laws’, just sobbing on their couch with everyone talking around me, probably wondering what was going on! Really made me think!!
I can totally relate. It’s one of those heart-rending stories that haunts you after you read it!
Crystal,
I have noticed a change in your views over the years. I’ve been following you ever since you had the other blog “Biblical Womanhood?” and it’s been refreshing to see your growth and how you’ve become your own person.
I grew up in a very strict religious environment where we women had no say and had to follow a set dress code. It was so restricting and suffocating, and it allowed for abuse of power. I feel much happier now that I am no longer in that environment.
I am very interested in reading “Grace is Free:…” Thank you for always posting these great book suggestions.
Thanks so much for your kind encouragement. It’s definitely been a journey… hard, humbling, but good! And I’m grateful!
Two books that I would recommend:
Love Does by Bob Goff and Edgy Conversations by Dan Waldschmidt.
With Love Does, I laughed, I shook my head wondering, who is this guy and is he for real but it also made me more reflective in my own life.
With Edgy Conversations, the book was lying around the house for a couple of weeks before I picked it up to read it. Based on the title I was not sure what to expect. I read the first chapter and could not put it down. It is more of a leadership type book, and how we approach failure and success in business. As business owners, it was very thought provoking. But it is not just limited to success in business, it is also applicable to our achieving success in our every lives.
Enjoy.
I loved Love Does! But I’ve never heard of Edgy Conversations — thanks so much for the recommendation!
Any book recommendations on helping and encouraging the intimacy of my marriage?
Have you read Sheet Music or Red Hot Monogamy? Both of those were ones I found encouraging.
I had such a hard time with the end of Me Before You. I read it when the Brittany Maynard story was all over the news so I couldn’t get it off my mind.
Oh, that *would* have been a hard time to read it. It was so, so sad!
I’ve watched (read) from afar as you’ve stepped out of the fundamentalist movement over the past several years. I’m so glad! I understand the temptation to stay in it (I was once there), but the freedom and grace on the other side is such a breath of fresh air. SO GLAD for your (and my!) journey to Christian liberty. The gospel is sweet, isn’t it?! Thanks for your candidness on this post, and so many recently. And Merry Christmas!
Thanks so much for your sweet encouragement — and for being on this journey with me!
I’ve said this to Crystal “privately” by e-mail, but at this point, I would like to take the opportunity to shout it from the rooftops, as it were . . .
I have been reading Crystal’s blogs for (OH MY GOODNESS!) nearly ten years. I do not think I have ever seen her write something that I have interpreted as unkind, uncharitable or legalistic.
I am truly glad to hear that you are no longer living with a fundamentalist mindset, dear Crystal, but from where I stand (way over here in NY!) I have never seen any prejudice or lack of love in your writing.
God bless you and your beautiful family.
Thanks so much for your sweet encouragement, friend!
I am reading two books. First book is Power of right believing by Joseph Prince. Over half way finished with this one and so good!!! Second book is Parenting with Love and Logic. My husband and I are reading this one together 🙂
And I am excited to open my Christmas gift because I am getting The Better Yes as one of my gifts :). Yea!!! Can’t wait to read this one!
Yay for getting The Best Yes for Christmas!
How do you find/choose your books? Do you get sent a lot of free ones because you’re a blogger? etc. Thank you.
I do get at least a few books each month sent to me from publishers who are hoping I’ll review them.
Here’s how I usually choose which books to read: https://moneysavingmom.com/2011/09/qa-how-do-you-choose-what-books-you-read.html
I’d be interested to hear what book in the “creating margin” genre ranks as your favorite!
Great question! Two that I found really helpful and insightful in the last year were:

Cracking up here … I love how ya’ll has entered your vernacular.
If I start saying “all ya’ll” or “ya’lls”, you can *really* start cracking up. 🙂
