It was a scorcher day today, so we didn’t venture out until late in the afternoon when it had cooled down a bit. And, because it was so hot, it was the perfect for trying out the sock bubble idea I’ve been seeing on just about every other blog recently.
We had so much fun with this — and it was so easy to do.
We decided to get adventurous and add drops of food coloring to the sock.
It was messy — but oh so fun! Word to the wise: don’t try adding food coloring unless your children are wearing smocks or play clothes. 🙂
And the children also thought it was tons of fun to use the socks to “clean” the deck, too!
Did you do something fun and frugal as a family today? If you blogged about it, I’d love for you to leave a link to your blog post below. Or, you can just tell us what you did in the comments.
Note: Since the purpose of this series is to encourage you to be intentional about fun in your home this summer, please only link up posts showing pictures/sharing details of fun things you did as a family today (or within the last few days). Posts that do not adhere to these guidelines will be deleted in order to make it fair for those who are putting forth a lot of effort to participate in this challenge.

This was so easy that I suggested it to my husband to do with the kids and I was woken from a nap to find they were doing it!! THANKS!!

I used bubbles as a go to babysitting ideas years and years ago.
– Take the lid of a clean empty butter dish and punch holes into it, or cut out larger circles with sissors. Dip it into a pan of bubbles and wave.
– Grab a string and make a loop (add two straws if you want a frame.
Also discovered my sister’s dog LOVES to chase the bubbles. Fun for the whole family.

I just did this with my 10 y.o. twin boys and their two friends. I added food coloring to the water though so as not to stain anyone’s clothes. Not as colorful. But they thought it was neat. It’s a little windy today so their snakes didn’t last long, but it was good for 15 minutes of outdoor entertainment. This would make a good birthday party activity.

Okay, I’m doing this one. My kids love bubbles! Thanks for posting.

We did that a couple of years ago when it appeared in Family Fun Magazine and loved it. (Never did food coloring though!) Good reminder to do again!

You always have such fun ideas. I was wondering if anyone has any good recipes for home made bubbles?
Heather@Creative Family Moments says
Yes! Steve Spangler has a great recipe, in my opinion, and we always do bouncing bubbles with it. So cool! Any bubble solution will work as long as you use gloves!

I helped my 8 and 10 year old learn how to write in secret code. We used the one that involves transferring each letter in the alphabet into 2 ‘tic tac toe’ grids and 2 ‘X’ grids. Google “secret codes for kids” and you will see several different styles. One child and I used the code to send the other child on a 3 step treasure hunt around our yard, ending with a small prize from our treat box hidden at that location. They had a lot of fun and the younger one got some spelling and reading practice in as well.

What a fun idea! We will have to try it. We are having trouble doing anything outside because of all the mosquitos here. They are TERRIBLE this year. But this week is a fun week of VBS and my kids are loving it!

My son made a car out of a box and pool noodle. We also made blueberry fruit leather from blueberries we picked .

We watched some episodes on Fetch on pbskids.org (they have all 5 seasons on there) for free. We also played Go Fish.

Thank you for the school holiday tips. We are just about to head into our winter holidays here in Australia. Will save this idea up for summer! In winter we like to go hiking, do a day trip to the snow, and lots of snuggly reading, movies and board games indoors.

Looks like everyone had fun blowing bubbles today at your house. It was cold here today but there was a break from the rain this morning before lunch so we were able to get outside to do squirt gun target practice. Both the kids loved it. My sons was asking when we get to do it again. He wanted to go back out in the rain. But he settled for helping daddy fix our car in the garage. Turned out to be a great day even with the rain.

Our frugal “Box City” lasted all winter, then recently was revived when the kids turned it into a snow cone shop. We surprised the kids with a real snow cone machine ($27)! It’s already paid for itself considering we were visiting the local snow cone stand weekly. They love to pour their own syrup. We just had it up and running again today! http://thinkmagnetkids.com/2012/06/23/the-morphing-of-box-city/

Today my daughter “cooked” us lunch outside in her play kitchen. Then we made brownies, pizza dough, and whipped cream! Yum!

Last weekend I bought a playdoh pizza maker for 25 cents. Today we made jello playdoh with ingredients I had on hand! My 3 year old played with it 3 time today. I’ll add the link below, but keep in mind that the recipe has to be cooked even though they left that part out.
