When I saw Jenae’s post on making Fireworks in a Jar, I knew we had to try it. Only we didn’t have any empty jars, so we used clear glasses, instead.
Each child got to choose their color or colors for their glass. We found it worked better when you did multiple colors and only put 1-2 drops of each in the oil.
I got smart this time around and did most of the pouring and all of the food coloring handling so that there was little mess to clean up afterward — unlike yesterday’s Homemade Bouncy Ball mess! 🙂
See Jenae’s post on I Can Teach My Child for step-by-step instructions for making your own Fireworks in a Jar.
Did you do something fun and frugal as a family today? If you blogged about it, I’d love for you to leave a link to your blog post below. Or, you can just tell us what you did in the comments.
Note: Since the purpose of this series is to encourage you to be intentional about fun in your home this summer, please only link up posts showing pictures/sharing details of fun things you did as a family today (or within the last few days). Posts that do not adhere to these guidelines will be deleted in order to make it fair for those who are putting forth a lot of effort to participate in this challenge.
Summer walks are one of my most favorite times with my little man, who happens to be all of 3 months! I love pointing out the trees, cars, flowers and whatever else catches our eyes. The pure enjoyment and fascination on his face is priceless.
My sister gave me an item that was similar to fireworks in a jar, except she took those ingredients and put them in a clean, label-free 16 oz bottle (you could use whatever size you wanted). She glued the lid on and it became a manipulative for kids. The color settled and you shook it up and it made designs. I believe she added some glitter also. It looked like a desk toy, and it sat on my desk at work until it disappeared.
Oh, I love the idea of being able to shake it up and re-use it! Thanks so much for the idea!
As soon as I saw this post I knew we had to do it. We just finished and it was so neat!
This looks fun! I bet my kiddos would love it!
I love the fireworks. We got outside and made a Grasshopper House

One of my kids’ favorite frugal activities is finger “painting” with shaving cream. If you are a couponer you probably have really cheap or free shaving cream in your stock up pile. Cream works better than gel. Spray a big glob on the table give them trucks or combs or anything, and let them go to town!! This keeps my littles busy for 30 mins to an hour. Best part is EASY clean up!
Here is another somewhat similar experiment I have done with my kids. Color-changing milk.

There are some other really cool experiments on this site, as well. I have enjoyed “Elephant’s Toothpaste” and “Bubbling Lava Lamp”.
I have never seen this craft before! I bet my kids would have enjoyed it when they were little.
We tried the marshmallow and toothpick structures today and they were a HUGE hit. Worked well for my 4, 7, and 9 year old. Kept them busy for over an hour.
Looks like this would be a fun thing to try. I am sure my son would enjoy making fireworks in a jar.
We went on a picnic today out at the airport and watched some planes come in to land and we also was able to see a helicopter land right across from us. It was a really fun time. I would recommend it to anyone who lives near a small airport.
What a neat idea!
Pshhh, you guys in Kansas, like us in Illinois, had better be doing your fireworks in a jar! Remember everyone, it’s so dry that many places are banning fireworks for safety reasons. My dad is a firefighter and we won’t be doing our family display any time soon. Everyone be safe – and pray for rain!
Those fireworks are cool! We made yummy flag snacks today!

How funny…we did this today as well. I agree — it wasn’t as pretty as the example, but still fun. I like your idea of giving each child their own.
