15 Ways to Have More Energy

We’ve been talking about ways to have more energy this week. If you missed the first two posts in this series, read them here.

Here are three more ways to have more energy:

7. Set Goals

Without goals, you have no real purpose for going through your days. If you’re aiming at nothing, you’re not going to feel inspired, motivated, or driven. Goals give you momentum, passion for life, and a reason to wake up every morning excited about what lies ahead of you.

Good goals need to be specific, measurable, and realistic. I find it’s helpful to break big goals down into simple bite-sized pieces. Instead of setting a goal to read a book in one week, I’ll set a goal to read 2-3 chapters each day — enough to easily finish the book in a week.

By breaking my goals down into smaller chunks, it makes them much more manageable and doable — and I usually end up following through with more of them that way, too!

If you don’t have goals, start with something simple. At the beginning of the week, pick one or two small goals to accomplish, write them down, and then break them down into smaller pieces — and work on knocking them out little by little.

You’ll probably be amazed at how much more zest for life you’ll have when you actually have a destination in mind and a plan to get there. And you just might find that your renewed zeal for life helps you attack all of life with more energy and excitement!

8. Go To Bed Early

If you’re a night owl, you’re already shaking your head and skipping over this one. And it might not work for you.

For me personally, though, going to bed early on a consistent basis really helps me to feel more rested. When I feel more rested, I’m naturally much more energetic and cheerful. Rather than dragging through each day trying to keep my eyes open with toothpicks, I’m meeting the day with gusto.

I’ve found that I can’t commit to going to bed at 9 p.m. every single night, but if I aim to go to bed at 9 p.m., I’m much more likely to be in bed close to 10 p.m. It doesn’t always happen and I usually have one or two nights per week when I’m up past 11 p.m., but I rarely every stay up much past 11 p.m. — that’s really late for me! 🙂

As a result, I get more sleep — and I’m able to get up early most mornings, something that gives me a huge headstart on the day.

If you’d like to start going to bed earlier but you just feel like it’s not possible, sit down and really think through what your hindrances are. Do you need to cut out some of your evening activities or just turn off the TV or computer earlier? Do you need to eat dinner earlier and start your bedtime routine right after dinner?

For those of you who want to go to bed earlier but can’t seem to fall asleep much earlier than midnight, try getting up really early for two or three days in a row, plus adding some exercise into your schedule. You’ll probably find that by the second or third day, you’re starting to feel tired by 10 p.m.

And by the way, if you can at all help it: go to bed when you first start to feel drowsy at night. Don’t wait for your second wind to kick in. Just go to bed — you’ll be glad you did in the morning!

9. Make the Most of Your Mornings

What you do in the first two hours of your morning sets the tone for your whole day.

If you drag yourself out of bed after hitting the snooze button eight times, stumble into the kitchen, turn on your laptop or phone and waste 45 minutes trying to wake yourself up, you’re not setting yourself up for a day of success.

Think about what five things you’d really like to do in the same order each morning, write these down, and commit to getting up and doing them every single morning for the next three weeks.

It will be hard to follow your five things morning routine at first, but stick with it and it will pay off. I promise!

Making the most of your mornings will give you momentum for the rest of your day!

{And by the way, for those of you moms out there who are already feeling defeated because your mornings are so unpredictable when you have little people underfoot: don’t feel badly if you don’t always do all five things perfectly in the same order every day for three weeks. Life happens and perfection is impossible. Do the best you can do and remember that making progress in the right direction — even if it seems like microscopic progress — is still moving in the right direction!}

    Oh wow going to bed at 9 would be a dream come true!!! Although you’re right, I’m sure it would make a huge difference! Lovin’ this series, Crystal!!

    Do you have any advice on how to have more energy/ create a routine with a newborn? I’m a first-time mom with a beautiful 3 week old daughter and I’m overwhelmed. I don’t seem to have the energy (or enough sleep) to keep up with the house so it’s a mess and that just makes me more overwhelmed.

      When I had my first child 3 years ago I felt totally overwhelmed with taking care of him, the house and everything else. Then I discovered She sounds out daily emails of a simple morning and evening routine and helps me slowly and consistently get my home and life in balance. She was an answer to prayer. What I love about her system is that it’s simple and doesn’t make me feel guilty. She helps me know that I can get things done in small steps, 15 minutes at a time. Hope that helps! Zoya

    • When I was in a similar time of my life, I sat my husband down once and asked him to list the 3 most important things he liked to see done in the house each day. He picked keep a clean kitchen counter. Have the couch cleared of toys when he got home so he could sit down and have clean clothes available. He then reminded me little ones aren’t little for long, so I needed to quite feeling guilty if the house wasn’t prefect and just try my best with the time and energy I had available to me. So for the infant years I did focus on his list of 3 things, and sometimes I got more done and sometimes not.

      Congratulations on being a first-time mom!

      The best thing you can do for yourself right now is give yourself a huge break! =) Babies can turn anyone’s routine upside down and sideways since they change their routine at any given time. I have had 4 newborns in the past 14 years and I found that if I planned on 6 weeks of adjustment time in finding a new routine, I got less frustrated. So give your self more time, rest a whole bunch, and enjoy these first weeks. They pass so quickly.

      And don’t be afraid to ask for a bit of help from a family member, a close friend, or maybe even an older mom or grandma from church.

      The best advice I can give is something that’s hard to feel for you right now: the tiredness with your newborn will pass! Granted you won’t really ever go back to your pre-baby sleep and energy, things will get a lot easier. One thing that took me awhile to learn was it is okay to put your awake baby down in a safe place while you do a simple task. As long as they aren’t wailing, he or she can wait while you organize the magazines or put the silverware in the dishwasher. Also, this is not the best frugal, healthy, or environmental thing I can advise, but I remember using the help of quick ready items at the start. A small pack of paper plates may lift the weight of doing the dishes for a few days. A salad from the grocery store may take care of dinner after a rough day. Or, on a weekend, pick up some bakery treat for you and your hubby. He will love you for this. Just keep it in your budget and start incorporating doing things that feel more natural. In no time, you will have it all knocked under your belt.

      I have 5 grown children and when I had newborns I just made it my goal to survive the first 2 months. After that you can start to ease back into some kind of routine but I would not worry about that right now.

      Great advice you’ve been given so far. I would add that it’s never too early to get your newborn baby started on a flexible routine. I would recommend 2 books to you that have great advice on how to do just that: “The Secrets of the Baby Whisperer” and “On Becoming Babywise”. They were 2 of the most important books I’ve ever read.

      Thank you all for the advice and encouragement! It is very much appreciated and has made me realize that I do need to change my expectations and just enjoy this wonderful season of my life. I’m blessed with a husband who is such an encouragement and help to me. We actually just finished reading BabyWise and plan to use some of the principles.

    You pretty much nailed me on this one!!! Mornings are REALLY hard for me. I’m a night person by nature, but I think this one is something that will help a lot. Now I just need to figure out what those five things would be for me…

  • I am an extreme early bird, I am in bed by 8 and fast asleep by 9. Late for me is falling asleep at 10! I wake up naturally around 5 sometimes a littler earlier sometimes a little later. I do get so much done before my whole family gets done. But I will admit, I have woken up and seen all that my night owl husband has got done at night and been amazed! He paints whole rooms, tiles floors, cleans the house (love that one). So over the years I have given up the conversion war and decided the energy answer is work with your eternal time clock, and once you find it don’t mess with it.

    This series is great! I love your tips on the mornings, they’re spot on. Mornings are really hard for me. The little one likes to wake up at 5 a.m. and usually I’m dragging myself out of bed to go get him. I find that when I start the day on the right foot and get going as if I have energy that early in the a.m., I end up feeling like I actually do.

    I love this series… but it just isn’t applicable to my life right now. I can’t even keep up with being “Fly”. My goal in the morning is to get out of bed, get something on my stomach and hope that it doesn’t come right back up.

    I encourage everyone to give themselves the grace that God gives in situations that you can’t control… like 1st trimester (horrible) morning sickness, the joys of a newborn or any type of sickness. That is the one thing I wish I had given myself with my first and even to an extent with my second child, I’m def. doing it with this one 🙂

    I start the day by reading my daily calendar of positive thinking by Wayne Dyer. I bought it years ago – it’s spiral bound and propped up next to my coffee maker. I enjoy reading his words over my first cup of coffee, saying a prayer, and moving into my day!

  • The main hinderance for me going to bed early and getting up early was my health. I had a massive yeast overgrowth which caused me to have a hard time sleeping well at all which meant that it didn’t really matter what time I went to sleep, I’d still not be able to wake up before 7am. Now that I’m eating EXTREMELY well (and surprisingly LOVING it!), I not only go to bed early, I’m up by 5:30 am and I don’t run out of steam all day. It’s WONDERFUL!!!

  • Going to bed early is such a big thing for me. Life is so much better when I’m not tired & grumpy all day, and I’ve found over time that I just need a lot of rest. Really enjoying the series!

  • I really am loving this series it has a lot of good practical tips and I love reading the comments it’s so up lifting to know you are not the only one who struggles with some of these items. And life by nature it kinda crazy so some days are more energyzing and action packed then others.

  • I really have found that going to bed at a decent hour really helps me to have more energy all day. If I don’t get enough sleep I will drag all day long and not get as much done. Also goal setting has really helped me to get more done with the energy I have. By goal setting I get the most important things done. I am really liking this series.

    Haha.. I resemble this statement.. Some of us are just not morning people. Im not & never have been & I doubt I ever will be.. however, Im up at 5 or 5:20 if I hit the snooze, sit, drink coffee in front of the computer until 6 am, then hit the shower, move like a locomotive thru my routine, and am out the door by 7 am and at work by 7:30 and most of the time am feeling fine. Its when you just sit.. and sit… and sit… and sit… thats the big problem. I know I’ve got to move & I do.. Thats huge for me. Just had to laugh though… thats been me my entire life.. I hate going to sleep and I hate waking up. 🙂
