12 Months to a Healthier You: Week 9 Check-In

Are you joining us for the 12 Months to a Healthier You Challenge? If so, it’s Friday and guess what that means? It’s time for our weekly check-in to post our progress.

March’s Challenge:

We’re focusing on developing the habit of drinking more water in March. I encourage you to set a simple and doable goal for drinking more water and to stick with it.

New to this challenge? Read more details on the plan for this year here.

My Water Intake Goal for March

My goal for March is to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day. I’m also hoping to keep up with January’s habit of doing exercising at least 4-5 times every week and February’s habit of eating six big salads every week.

This Week’s Progress:

I quickly realized that I don’t drink enough water! This challenge has been so good for me and I’m happy to report that I’ve hit my goal of drinking 8 glasses of water every day all but one day! I’ve also kept up with exercising and eating big salads. And I can definitely tell that being intentional about these three things are making a big difference in my life!

How Are YOU Doing?

I just started with this challenge this week. I already exercise 5-6 days a week, but now I’ve added the water. I didn’t realize how little water I was actually drinking every day (maybe around 16-24 oz). Now I’ve started using a big cup with straw that I got at the hospital when my son was born. It’s 32 oz, so I try to drink that twice each day. I’ve managed all but one day to keep it up. However, I’m finding the extra bathroom trips time consuming, haha. I do feel like my skin already looks better and I’m sure it’s helping take some of the toxins out of my body. LOVE following your blog!!

  • Cheryl says:

Hi, I’ve been having a large glass of water in the morning with breakfast for the past year or so and it really has become a habit for me. I also take water with me to work too, so I sip while I’m working at the desk. I also like to add lemon juice to it to change thing up a bit. When I’m at home I just fill a cup with ice/water and keep it in the kitchen and as I do my work will also have some.

  • I have started wearing a pedometer in the house; I placed it out of view. I checked at the end of the day yesterday, and just by working-from-home, going from my office to wherever, cleaning, walking the dogs, cooking, etc., I walked six miles! Its awesome to see results from unexpected places!

  • Amy says:

Crystal, I’m curious as to what specific differences you’re noticing by doing all if these things? I need major motivation here – I am not good at taking care of myself! And, like Megan, I don’t like all those extra bathroom trips! For me, it all sounds so good in theory, but implementing any kind of change is so difficult. I lack discipline, I suppose.

    • Mona says:

I’m with you Amy! I’m horrible at doing anything very regularly. I’ll exercise for two weeks and then totally abandon it…the scale doesn’t budge and I get frustrated. I’m definitely not drinking enough water, but I have a hard time drinking large quantities. I drink a couple ounces at a time, but to drink a whole glass would leave me with a sloshy feeling in my belly. Bleh… Lacking discipline is definitely my problem!

    • Renee says:

I’ve found that once your body becomes adjusted to your increased water intake, you won’t have to use the bathroom as much 🙂

  • Ginger says:

Yes! While challenging myself so far this year, I’ve noticed that I had not been drinking enough water either. I’m feeling so much better as I keep myself hydrated! I’m still plugging away at my exercise goals – twice at home and twice at the gym. I’m hoping to add another workout into my week very soon. I just wanted to make sure that I was getting in the four already before adding another one. Keep up the good work!

  • Tari says:

I’ve been drinking a boat ton of water lately, and have been upping my exercise daily this last week a little at a time. Man, it is a huge gift for me to have an elliptical in my house now. the snow and ice is super slick in my neighborhood and I got sick for a week the last time I ran outside. AND I’m feeling better and more energized each day for it.

  • Kari says:

I am so thankful for this challenge this month! I have had so much more water this week than I ever normally have. Only 1 coke all week and my regular cup of coffee in the morning and I have so much more energy already. I also noticed when my kids ask for a drink I go to the sink and get them water instead of something else. Next week, the goal is to up it to 6 glasses of water a day…I’m at 4 this week…a HUGE improvement!

  • I’ve done pretty well with drinking water, but you really do have to pay attention. You can’t just grab a sip when you’re thirsty, you’ll never get enough that way. (You’re actually dehydrated at that point, to my understanding.) I’ve found that if I drink a glass in the morning without ice I can drink quite a lot at once and that sort of sets the pace for the rest of the day (with ice!).

  • Shelly says:

I’ve been trying to increase my water intake since the start of the year. I’m trying to increase my intake this month to 6 glasses per day. I did fairly well this week. I was only short two days so not too bad.

  • Katie says:

I have been drinking a lot of water. We are getting rid of a stomach bug here so will get back to exercise and eating more salads etc. Once we get back into the swing of things with everyone healthy.

  • Renee says:

I’ve been keeping on track with my water intake. Increased number of salads I had this week, plus adding more veggies. Add keeping on track with my exercising, yahoo!

  • Anna says:

I just wanted to share a water-tracking tip I’m using (credit goes to Flylady). I have colored hair bands on my water bottle to help me keep track of my intake. My bottle is 25 oz, and I need to be drinking 75 oz a day. I put three hair elastics on the bottom of my bottle at the start of the day and each time I finish drinking and refill I roll one of those hairbands to the top of my bottle. It kind of makes drinking my water into a game, and helps me keep on track when otherwise I would forget how much I’ve drunk.

  • I read about this challenge this morning on Beth Cranford’s blog. I am excited to join the challenge! 🙂

  • Maria says:

I’ve been doing well meeting my goals. I didn’t exercise yesterday, though. Now I just need to get the rest of my goals met or back to where they should be…..

  • Dacha says:

I’ve been doing pretty well with my exercising goals. Only on one morning instead of a planned jog I ended up having coffee with a dear friend ( in my jogging clothes !). But I guess that’s where “God wanted me”, as she really needed to talk. I also went swimming twice with my kids, in the circumstances where I’d have usually said: Let’s stay home ! ( & would have felt pity for myself for not being able to exercise!) I’m still concentrating hard on my fruits/ veggies at every meal goal! I’m getting better at it and I feel SO much better as well! I still have to improve my snacks though. This new habit makes me change the way I shop: I have now a weekly planned shopping stop at our local farmer’s market. I’m fitting it into our budget as well… Somehow the fruit & veggies from the market are tastier!:) I have to plan as well to buy bottled water- the taste of our tap water isn’t great here ( France) My goal is to drink a bottle of 1 liter per day as well as at least 2 herb teas. So far- not bad! Good Luck to everyone!

  • Stevi says:

I haven’t done too well this week =( I guess I’ve been too consumed by all the junk that’s been going on in my life this week (poor excuse I know). I’ll do better next week tho! I have a 24oz water bottle so if I drink 3 a day I’ll be good. I’m not too big on plain water so I put lemon, lime, and grapefruit in it to to make it tastier =)

  • Brandi says:

Thank you so much for this challenge! It has really helped me focus on small obtainable goals each month.

  • Sarah says:

I just found this challenge and want to take part. My goal is to walk or move in some way for at least 15 minutes, 4 days a week, to start; this will be more than I do presently. I do eat quite a few veggies but very little fresh fruit (allergic to some); goal there is to eat one safe fruit serving daily. For March, I do quite well drinking enough water on days I work, but not so well at home on days off; goal is to consistently drink 8 cups daily. Thankfully, our deep well water is delicious.
