As I shared in January, I’m changing the way I’m approaching my reading goals in 2014. Instead of picking books for the whole year, I’m just choosing books a month at a time.
April was a dud month for me when it came to reading. I was busy with packing up our house for our move and attending/hosting a number of goodbye get-togethers and I just didn’t crack open very many books. In fact, I only read four books: Though Waters Roar, Praying for Boys, His Grace is Enough, and No Cook Freezer Meals.
So I’m going to try to finish most of the books I had on April’s list in May:
10 Books I Plan to Read in May
- I Thought It Was Just Me (But It Isn’t)
- Secrets of Dynamic Communication
- The Busy Homeschool Mom’s Guide to Daylight
- Red Hot Monogamy
- Breathe
- Chasing Francis
- Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook
- The Measure of Success
- The Traitor’s Wife
- In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day
I also am reading through the Bible using the plan in my Blessing Journal and reading one devotional from Jesus Today every day.
3 Books I Plan to Read Aloud to My Kids
- The Imagination Station: Captured on the High Seas
- Devotional: Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing
- Brother Andrew: Behind Enemy Lines
What books are you planning to read in May? Leave a comment and let us know — and then you can come back at the end of May to tell us what you ended up reading and what you thought of the books you read!
Thanks so much for reading my No Cook Freezer Meals book! I just finished reading ‘Bossypants’ by Tina Fey and I’m now reading ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns and ‘The 4-Hour Work Week.’
Thanks so much for sending me a copy! I enjoyed it!
I took a break from reading in April (for an all-consuming business project that I’m glad is over right now!), and I was SOOO glad to get back into it this weekend! I read two books on Saturday–Faith Leaps by Alyssa Avant and Balanced by Tricia Goyer. Both are about being a work-at-home mom.
I’m now diving into The Nazi Officer’s Wife: How One Jewish Woman Survived the Holocaust. I have always enjoyed studying that time period, and I love reading autobiographies. So far, I’m devouring it!
And I think 4 books in one month is…huge!!
Hope your move goes great!! 🙂
I’m so impressed that you read 10 books per month! I really just started reading books (instead of magazines) again in the last month or so, and I’m going at a one book per week pace. This month I plan to read:
(1) More Than Enough: The Ten Keys to Changing Your Financial Destiny
(2) Make Money, Not Excuses: Wake Up, Take Charge, and Overcome Your Financial Fears Forever
(3) The Complete Cheapskate: How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out, and Break Free From Money Worries Forever
(4) Money 911: Your Most Pressing Money Questions Answered, Your Money Emergencies Solved
I am trying to study for my CPA test. so unfortunately it will be my only reading. But I discovered Overdrive app, which actually let you borrow audio books from the library. So instead of reading you are listening. This way I am able to listen to much more books while I do my housework or at the gym or even driving around.
What age would you recommend the Trailblazer books for (as a read-aloud)? Would they be for younger children than the Christian Heroes Then and Now books?
April was a dud month for me as well! I’m hoping this month is better! Here is my list: http://womenwithintention.com/may-2014-reading-list/
I hope my book wasn’t a dud itself! 😉
I can’t believe you had time to read that many with packing up a house!
I’m reading Voice in the Wind by Francine Rivers and 10 Habits of Happy Mothers by Meg Meeker. Both excellent so far!
I don’t read as much throughout the rest of the year, but I do read a lot in the summer. I don’t care for the heat and humidity, so I stay inside more. I am at the stage in my life where that is doable. Can’t wait to make a book list! This post has inspired me!
I discovered this past weekend that you can listen to some audio books on you tube.
Oh, thanks so much for that tip! That might be a great thing to do while folding laundry!
I plan on reading 8 – 10 books in May (we’ll see how that goes), a few of which are: “Six Ways to keep the “good” in your boy”; “The Little Book of Talent” and a few Imagination Station books (#2 and #3) with my kids. Last month I really enjoyed: http://behealthybehappywellness.com/2014/04/my-favorite-books-from-april/
You will love Breathe. One of the best I’d read ever!
I loved the book, “Breathe” by Keri Wyatt Kent. I read it when my kids were all young, and it was–literally–a breath of fresh air!
I’m really enjoying “The Up Side of Down,” by Megan McArdle. I’ve heard a few interviews with her and really appreciated what she had to say. Her book is about the importance of failure and failing well, and while a lot of her applications are for business, I’ve found myself thinking about the way I parent and educate my kids.
I’ve read two books on your list–the Brene Brown one and Praying for Boys. I liked both of them.
My books this month are:
“Learning to Walk in the Dark” by Barbara Brown Taylor
“I Am Malala” by Malala Yousefzai
“Heaven” by Randy Alcorn (finishing it up this month with my bible study ladies, second time I’ve read it)
“Crazy Salad” by Nora Ephron
Happy reading!

I’ve heard the couple that wrote Red Hot Monogamy on Focus on the Family. I’d love to hear how you liked it when you are done.
I read 8 books last month, all fiction. With a blog, an Etsy shop, and a 2 year old, I usually only get 1-2 a month if I’m lucky The shop suffered some last month but I needed the break. Plus, we make maple syrup. There were a lot of nights sitting out with my husband around the evaporator so I got some reading in. 🙂
April was a dud reading month for me, too, though I did finish The Convent. This month, I plan to read The Yeast Connection, The Nazi Officer’s Wife, and The Valley of Amazement.
I just read The Nazi Officer’s Wife and really liked it. I am thinking about choosing it for my book club pick in Nov. We’ll see, but I thought it was very good.
Awesome list! We all have dud months 🙂 Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on your May book list! Dynamic Communication, Pit, Homeschool Mom, Red-Hot…they all sound great!
In a Pit … GREAT book! You’ll love it!
I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Jab, Jab, Jab Right Hook! That’s on my list, but wanted to hear from someone’s opinion I trust before buying. 🙂
I took a break from reading in the month of April. Never in my life have I went so long without opening a book. But I found myself devouring and making time for reading, but my Bible time was lacking. Since I have two very little ones (read: never sleep more than 2-3 hour stretched at a time), I was giving myself plenty of grace. Yet I was convicted that I had plenty of time to read mounds of books, but no time for Jesus? Yeesh. So I fasted from my reading list. It was hard, but worth it. I’m ready to dive back in this month though with a new perspective and renewed thirst for the Word! First up, Seven Sacred Pauses, Family Driven Faith, and Little Women. 🙂
I am LOVING In a Pit… SO good!
And I love your comment on fasting from other books so you could spend time really diving in the word! Thanks for sharing!
So true we neglect God so much by putting other books before Him. I too had to stay away from books because I spent more time on other books and only 15 min. reading my bible. Oh how wrong I was! If I say I am a follower of His then He must consume me. He must come first. The lessons we learn as we let the Holy Spirit lead. Thanks for sharing!
