I get extremely depressed when I read how some families can eat on $50 / week and the simplicity of lunch. Then I find out you are feeding toddlers and a husband who works outside the home. I have 20 year old daughter, 18 year old BOY (who is starving all the time), and 8 year year old whom I homeschool, AND a husband who works at home. I am feeding 4 adults who are in and out during the day for college and work. I think my budget of $100-125 is pretty low LOL (that includes all HBA and food)
I need to rethink my budget 🙂
Erica @ Sort of Crunchy says
Don’t feel bad! I spend about $175-$200 a week for a family of 5 (2 adults, a 6 year old, a 4 year old and a 20 month old). I feel good about what I buy and it works for my family.
Don’t compare yourself to others- I am sure you are doing what is best for your family 🙂
Amie says
Great job. I shopped one day early to catch the end of this week’s sale. I spent about $44 and I’m hoping to not spend more. I bought:
Wags: 8 turkey bacon -3x $1 off and 5x $.55 off coupons, 4 local papers (for coupons) – $1 RR and 1000 points and spent $2.44, including tax
Kroger: 8 Kool Aid -4x $1/2, 2 Lucky Charms -2x $.50 doubled and $.50 saving star ecoupon, eggs -free coupon, bananas, 1 Twix Ice Cream Bars – $1.50, 3 Kroger chips – $1/$4 snack coupon and $.60/2 ecoupon, 2 Kroger sharp cheddar – $.75/2 ecoupon, boneless pork loin -$1, frozen veggies, big bag of cat food – $42 with tax.
Luckily, I have salad fixings and berries from my garden. I have chicken, milk, bread, etc. from the freezer and a well stocked pantry.
I saw that Kroger has another Mega Event coming up and I have a hard time not shopping those to stock up. My budget is $75 for a family of four people, 2 cats, and 8 dogs, but I stocked up on dog food a few weeks ago and went over budget so I’m trying to balance things out by the end of the month. I think I need to get back to meal planning. lol.

Great job! 🙂

Gretchen, are you dairy-free with milk? I am lactose intolerant so I try to stock up on Silk soy milk when QFC (our Kroger) has it as part of the buy 5, save $5 promotion for $1.99. There are often coupons in SmartSource and I frequently find $0.55 off blinkie coupons which don’t double here but would for you. Almond milk has a lot less protein but there is a lot of debate around the hormones with soy. Good luck looking for your milk alternative.
Gretchen says
Yes, I cannot have milk, cottage cheese, yogurt or sour cream (and certain ice creams). This week was the first time I tried the Soy milk (because I, too, have heard the debate about the hormones and was hesitant to buy it) but I don’t really like it. I’ve tried coconut milk and rice milk, too, but didn’t care for the taste. Almond milk is okay (meaning I can tolerate it if I don’t think about it!). I’m not sure what else there is to try but I’m keeping my eyes open. 🙂
Tori says
I was dairy free while nursing my oldest and the only milk alternative I could stand was hemp milk. It was the closest in my opinion to 2%. My daughter loves almond milk now and we get the vanilla almond milk from aldi.
theresa says
Is this for a family of four?
Gretchen says
This is for a family of 3.
lindsey says
great job! The recipe for the crock pot black bean chicken looks delicious! I hope to try it next week.
Lori says
Great job Gretchen! I wish I knew what you were paying for your meat, flour, cheese, pbj, etc!
Emily says
You can get the Simple Truth organic eggs for $2.89/dozen??? Wow. My Kroger charges around that for just the natural, cage free dozen. The certified organic runs over $4 something for the dozen.
Gretchen says
Ooops! After I read your comment I went and looked at the eggs I bought. I guess they are just the natural, cage free ones after all and NOT organic.
The Prudent Homemaker says
It’s really interesting to see how prices vary. Your milk is so much less than ours ($2.69-$2.72 here), but blueberries here are $3.79.
Em says
our milk price is anywhere from $3 to 4.09 a gallon.
I too was jealous!
