If you have a stand mixer with a dough hook it is so easy (and much cheaper!) to make it yourself.
    HOMEMADE PLAYDOUGH
    Place in mixing bowl:
    3 1/2 cups flour
    1/2 cup salt
2 pkgs unsweetened Koolaid or other drink mix (same flavor)
    3 Tablespoons oil
    Add:
    2 cups boiling water
Mix with dough hooks until well blended. Allow to cool and store in an air-tight container.

This playdough smells great, thanks to the kool-aid, and lasts much longer than the store bought stuff. I think it’s softer and easier for the kids to work with as well.
(I only buy kool-aid for this purpose, and only when it is free or cheap. For the lemonade flavor I sometimes add a couple of drops of yellow food coloring to make it brighter, but all other flavors tint the dough nicely and make it smell good.)

For anyone looking for Play-Doh, the King Sooper’s (Kroger) near my home in Denver has 24 packs of Play-Doh on clearance for $4.50. They usually sell for $15 at Target here.

My kids LOVE playdoh! I give them a large cookie sheet (the kind with shallow sides) to play on. It keeps the crumbs contained and off my carpet :)

We do playdoh out on the deck at our house. I think I might try out making my own! We go through a lot since all the neighbors come over and play too.
