Do you have issues with your hair feeling icky? This shower water filter was a really inexpensive solution for me!
We moved into this new-to-us house almost a year ago and I started noticing that my hair just looked icky a lot of the time. It felt like the texture had changed and it wasn’t smooth like it used to be.
I thought maybe it was just because I was getting older or something. I tried changing hair products, but it didn’t really seem to make a difference.
I finally decided to just let it be and figured it just was what it was… until we went and stayed in a hotel and I washed my hair and it looked so soft and smooth again.
Say what?? I was confused. You think I would instantly figure out it was the water, but I didn’t.
This happened two more times over the next number of months — where my hair would look pretty amazing when I washed it at a hotel.
I finally clued in that it was the water I was washing my hair with that was the issue and our water was basically wrecking my hair. (We knew our water was hard, but we found out that it also has really high chlorine content.)
It was about that time that I realized both girls had had dandruff and their hair hadn’t looked great ever since we moved into this house, too.
We didn’t have it in the budget to put in a whole house water system to soften or filter our water right now nor could the girls and I just run and stay at a hotel every time we needed to wash our hair, but I really wanted to try to do something about it.
I decided to head to Amazon to see if they had anything that might be an option… and sure enough, there was the AquaBliss High Output Shower Filter.
It was $33 and it had great reviews. The Amazon description said this:
Most water filters use too little calcium sulfate, redox media and ceramic mineral balls, replacing them in volume with cheap activated carbon. AQUABLISS is revolutionizing the shower filter industry with a REVOLUTIONARY, PROPRIETARY SYSTEM that BALANCES the four elements you need to eliminate Chlorine, heavy metals (lead, mercury, nickel, chromium), bacteria, pesticides, and inhibits the growth of scale, algae, fungi, mold plus restores what your hard, chemical filled water did to your hair, skin and nails!
The Amazon description also said it could be installed in minutes. I was sold — especially since I had Amazon gift cards from Swagbucks I could use to buy it! I figured that it was worth a shot and it likely wouldn’t hurt anything!
Sure enough, it was super easy to install… and, after using it for almost two months, I am so happy to say that it really and truly works. In fact, I noticed a difference in my hair immediately after I washed it the first time.
Since we installed it, my hair has looked so much better, been so much softer, and been so much easier to work with. All for just $33! I have so impressed that we ended up buying the same shower filter for the girls’ showers, too, and they are starting to notice a difference in their hair, as well.
While we still hope to eventually put in a whole house water filtering or softening system (we need to do research on what the best options are for that!), for now, I’m happy that we have fixed some of the issues by just installing a simple $33 shower filter.
Note: I’ve heard that you might be able to find it cheaper at a local store, so let us know if you know where you can get it for less.
Brandette Winblad says
Crystal-
Are you still using the AquaBliss shower water filters? Are you still happy with the results? I have noticed over the past few months that my hair is just miserable. It has never done this before. I have tried changing shampoos/conditioners, hair products, etc…nothing has helped. Nothing else has changed, but we do have hard water here. So, I took the plunge and bought this on Amazon today. So, I was super curious if you were still using it and happy? I first learned about it from this post, never knew something like that existed! Thank you.
Crystal Paine says
Yes, I’m definitely still a huge fan. We buy a replacement filter every 4-6 months.
Brandette Winblad says
THANK YOU for replying. Ours gets delivered tomorrow, so I hope I see some improvement this next week. I will happily buy replacement filters if this thing magically helps with our hard water and my current hair issues. Once you installed the shower filter, did you notice any improvement in build-up and having to clean the shower at all? I didn’t think about it when I ordered, but I wonder if it helps with all the scrubbing too!
Jessesgirl says
This is going to sound crazy, but when I looked at the picture of your fabulous new showerhead/filter, it looks like part of if might be screwed into your shower wall? If that’s the case… please make sure to have used the right kind of screws to make it watertight, and to have caulked thoroughly around it. We bought a house where the previous owners failed to take those types of measures and wound up with water damage (and a case of paranoia, lol!) You’ve probably taken these precautions, but just in case!
I’m glad you found a simple solution for now! We had a whole house water softener in our last home, and it was great, but we found we needed much less soap/shampoo/ detergent/etc. to get our stuff clean! That was an interesting learning curve! 🙂
Erin says
Thank you so much for this post and the link to this shower filter. I can’t believe the difference in my hair and skin. What an improvement!
Crystal Paine says
Oh yay! That makes me SO happy!
Lalena Chacon Carter says
Hi!
Thank you for posting this I always go back on your blog and FB and look at everything.
I am going to buy this, we live in the farmlands in Ca. and our water is super hard and I too did notice when I went to a hotel it was really soft. So I am going to buy it, perhaps it will motivate me to remodel our bathroom.
On another note, I tried not washing my hair 5 days. I made to day 4 but it was super greasy and started to itch so I have to wash it. LOL
I did notice though that it is much more softer but I was combing out grease. LOL. So I am going to stop at day 3 and wash.
I think you are a wonderful person and I have learned a lot from you, look forward to learning more.
God Bless!
Crystal Paine says
Thanks so much for your encouragement! And it definitely takes time to train your hair to wash it less often.
Sara Bunnell says
I picked up this same one at Lowes… & it did not change the pressure, I love it! I saw this post & had to have one. Our well water is awful! I have used it twice now & I love it! The filter piece lasts 6 months. easy on – easy off… My 11 year old son installed it for me. We thought about getting a new shower head as well. but ours is still good. Thank you so much. I think the price was comparable to Amazons
Jenny B. says
Hii,
Quick question. Does the filter change the water pressure?
We saw a filter at Home Depot today and I wondered if it was the one that you had blogged about. I came home to look for this email. I showed it to my boyfriend and so he then asked if it would change the water pressure? It shouldn’t right? It’s just a filter, but i’d like your opinion. The one we saw at HomeDepot was I believe the brand Sprite and it was 17 and change.
Thank you!
Crystal Paine says
It didn’t for us.
Amy Thetford says
I’m so trying this! Thanks! We have REALLY hard water, but live in an apartment, so we can’t really get a whole house filter.
Alisha says
Crystal,
There are so many comments on this one!! It’s kind of making me chuckle actually. Oh well, I am going to add one more.
One time I was in the grocery store (I live in Indiana) and I saw someone who was slender, with pretty hair. I only saw her from the back and for a quick second I thought it looked like you… and I got so excited, thinking, “OH MY WORD! What is Crystal doing here!?” and then one second later, it was gone. She turned around, and it wasn’t your pretty little face looking back at me. I was so bummed.
Anyway, I just thought I would tell you that, because this particular woman was nicely dressed, with great hair… and that is why I thought it was you. 🙂
The end.
Crystal Paine says
Aw, that story made me laugh and was so kind of you to say! Thank you for taking time to share!
Lindsey says
We are looking to purchase or rent a whole-house water filtration system. Any suggestions on brands or systems would be SUPER appreciated 🙂
Joanna says
I have to read the description better but my husband is asking how often you have to replace the filters. Thanks if anyone sees it.
Holly Williams says
Hi,
Crystal tells about the filter in the 2nd comment on this post. I hope this helps.
Pamela says
Yes water softeners are expensive. We put a non electric one in . Cost $2000 and that was 20 years ago. We have well water no chlorine. But Iron in the water.
Ashley Penn says
At the first house we bought, one of the first things we invests in was a whole-home water filter. It changed EVERYTHING.
Showering was way nicer. I didn’t get that clacium buildup in my shower, so I didn’t have to scrub as often. I didn’t need to use as much laundry detergent. We didn’t get spots on our dishes.
And the filters only have to be changed every 3 years.
We sold our home and moved. But hubby and I both agree, when we buy a house again, we’re investing in another whole-house filter.
Lindsey says
Do you mind sharing which whole-house system you got? We are very interested in getting one.
Corrie says
Wow I can’t belueve such a comment came from someone you knew. I guess it’s just jealousy that you have become successful and she must not be in a very good place in her life. I just hope she isn’t spreading that attitude to any children she has.
And what she also doesn’t understand is even IF someone had oily hair, who cares. It’s whats inside and attitude that matters. I’d much rather be friends with someone who isn’t perfect on the outside and has a wonderful heart. And I know you and your girls are well groomed and taken care of AND loving and have wonderful hearts.
I’m glad you left her comment and responded to it in such a graceful way.
Nora says
Your situation with the water after moving reminds me of an experience a friend of mine had regarding her husband’s fertility after he got a smartphone that he carried in a pants pocket.
Thank you for the info about the gadget for the shower. I’m looking forward to your research reports on wider-scale filtration systems. Our water leaves a residue on the dish drainer that causes me to wonder what is in it. We use water filtered by the refrigerator for drinking and cooking.
JC says
So when you say”easy to install”… is that easy to install if you are kind of handy? Or easy to install if the most you can do is hang a picture? Did you have to cut into the pipe?
Crystal Paine says
Yes! It was very easy and you don’t have to cut the pipe at all!
JC says
I’m so glad lad for this post. We moved from a house with well water, whole house filter, and water softener to a house with city water in November. We immediately filtered the drinking water but I didn’t think about the shower until two weeks in when I washed my hair and it still looked gross. My daughter’s hair acted the same way. I’ve tried different shampoos and the best I could do was a $25 bottle of salon shampoo! And then hair washing is still every three days. My daughter is three and hates washing hair so this wasn’t workable. But here is the other thing: I think our laundry specifically towels has developed a kind of weird greasy feeling. Not greasy exactly but some type of residue? I was thinking I was cray but after reading these comments it’s clearly the water and I’m not crazy!! As an aside you can go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and get both the water filter and water softener. That’s cheaper but it also depends on your level of “handiness” to install and maintain such things. Our whole house water valve is behind a sheet rock panel (why?!) so we will need to go the more expensive route. A shower filter will be such a huge help in the meantime. Thanks for the post 🙂
Lisa Smith says
This whole subject/post is so interesting. I definitely want to look into our water now because I totally feel the same way about my hair when we travel. How do I find out if we have hard/soft water and the mineral content?? Do I just ask the water company?
Crystal Paine says
I think you can get your water tested… we found out when we had contractors come out to give us estimates for having our shower torn out and replaced.
Lea says
Lisa, we bought a little test kit at the hardware store. We had a second test done by a company that does that type of thing (we used the yellow pages to find who in the days before Google) just to confirm the results.
Hope that’s helpful, Lea
Autumn says
We are on well water at our house and our water is extremely hard and we had orange water from all the dirt. For the past 10+ years we have had a Culligan whole-home water softener system. It’s the best thing ever for just $50/month. Culligan does all the upkeep with maintenance and refilling the salt. We shopped around for a system of our own and it was going to be upwards of $3,000 and we’d have to do the maintenance ourselves. We didn’t want that expense or upkeep, so Culligan’s services were an answered prayer for us!
Crystal Paine says
Oh! Thanks for this great tip!!
Julie Swihart says
I have the same story! My hair felt so much softer after staying at a hotel, and finally I figured out it wasn’t my products, it was the water. I bought the Aquabliss too and your post reminded me to change the filter! You’re beautiful and I appreciate you!
Crystal Paine says
YAY! I’m glad this was a good reminder!
Jennifer Brown says
If you notice that anyone is still having dandruff/dry scalp I highly recommend a salon quality shampoo. I suffered my whole life with really dry scalp and now I use Paul Mitchell brand everything and it has made a world of difference in my hair/scalp. It costs more but I use less and only wash my hair 2x a week without any dry shampoo or other products.
Crystal Paine says
Thanks so much for the recommendation!
JJ says
Crystal, this is why I’ve followed your blog for years!!! You are an amazing problem solver and find the best deals!!! I am so glad I read this–as always!!!
And unrelated to this post, but I keep thinking about the post of you and your daughter taking selfies. And it is so encouraging for this mommy of Littles!!!
Your love for your family, others and the positive impact you have made on the WORLD are HUGE!!! What an awesome ministry you have a gift you are!!!
There was a meme going around on Facebook about different types of friends. One said something about your on-line friend(the one you’ve never met but have been impacted by). I feel like we’d be friends “in person” and always walk away from your blog feeling like I’ve learned something valuable, applicable, and encouraging!!!
Thank you for being you!!!
Crystal Paine says
Aw, thank you so much for your kind encouragement! Your comment really blessed me!
lizzy says
Crystal–I just had to post and say I am just so sorry you have had to endure comments like that. Even when you have shared that people sometimes send unkind emails, I never imagined this kind of cruelty. And attack of the enemy, for you are mightily used by God! Thankful for your faithful and gracious witness.
Crystal Paine says
Thanks for your encouragement! When multiple comments come in like this in a day it can discourage me… but I try to remember my WHY for blogging and to remember the truth of who I am in Christ.
Michelle says
Wow! I would have never thought to consider a filter for the shower but it makes sense now that you posted this. I’m curious to find out if the filter has affected your water pressure at all. Thanks for all that you do!
Crystal Paine says
It hasn’t seem to affect the water pressure at all!
Beverly says
Thank you for posting. I never connected that all the chemicals in the water from your shower can effect your hair. I’ve been losing my hair for 4 months now possibly this could be something that could help.
Crystal Paine says
I couldn’t believe that it took me so long to figure it out!

Crystal, I and your other 904,919+ followers applaud and appreciate the grace and poise you have displayed. You and your family are beautiful and I love your blog.

Where else have people found this Aquabliss? Thanks so much for sharing! My hair needs a cheap rescue!

Obviously Tammy does have a problem. And until she seeks help, she will continue to hurt and hurtful toward other people. She needs to deal with the real problem that’s causing all that anger. She will never be happy in life until she deals with it.
Julie says
I know we have hard water. We get deposits on glasses and light white in showers. I don’t know that We have room for a water softener in our closet, though. Something to look into.

ok, found the shampoo I mentioned a minute ago. I think they reformulated it but it’s the one in the white bottle, not green/blue bottle.

Our contractor just talked about putting in a similar item (might even be the same) at the junction point to where water comes into the house…rather than a whole home system. It is a cheaper fix, I believe and just have to replace the filters more regularly. Might look into that too. We have not done it yet or I could give more details, but I gather he has done it in his own house and worked great.
Crystal Paine says
Thanks so much for that tip!
dawn says
I love the filter idea! We have hard water and I never thought of a filter although my hair has also become frizzy and dry. I do also notice it building up on countertops near faucets where I scrap it off with a widget.
But I did recently find a shampoo that helps! Redken makes one that removes mineral build-up in your hair. It’s not cheap, but you can get it during the liter sale at Ulta for $20 (I think). I wash my hair very other day and a liter lasts me about a year so cost per wash isn’t bad at all. It was called “clean maniac” when I bough tit a few months ago but now the changed the packaging.
Crystal Paine says
Thanks so much for the suggestion!
Emily F. says
Wow! We just had to have a whole house softener put in after we found out we had extremely hard water. I thought that our water was fine because we don’t have any build up on our dishes, or anything super noticeable anywhere else. I’m starting to realize that our clothes, our dishwasher, and many of our fixtures have been damaged or ruined, over time. I’m glad you have this short term fix until you can do the whole thing!
Crystal Paine says
Yes! I’m anxious to get the whole thing done soon!
Savannah says
Does the filter impact the water flow/pressure at all?
Crystal Paine says
I thought it might, but it hasn’t seemed to at all!
Emily says
Check into a silicone scalp brush (also available on Amazon) to use in the shower, especially for the girls. It has been a healthy scalp game changer at our house and itt feels amazing when you use it.
Denise says
I love mine! Really helps with my scalp eczema and was I expensive!
Crystal Paine says
Thanks for the suggestion! Gratefully, their hair has gotten SO much better since we installed the filters and almost all of the dandruff has gone away!
Awmeme says
Hard water will even ruin your hard water heater…definitely worth investing in a water softner.
Crystal Paine says
We definitely have it on the priority list for this year!
Nicole says
The chlorine content in the water can affect your hair as much as the hard water. We have a softener and chlorine filter in our current house, but in our last house I used a similar filter because we only had a water softener. I would always know the filter cartridge needed to be replaced because my hair would start not cooperating or not looking as nice (even with the water softener).
Crystal Paine says
I realize that I failed to say in the post that we found out recently (when we were getting estimates to have our shower fixed in our bathroom — it was installed improperly and it caused it to leak and it needs to be ripped out and the floor has to be re-done, too!) that we have really high chlorine content in our water. And I think that is another big reason why my hair was looking icky — and why the filter is working so well!
Chris says
The hard water will also ruin your fixtures and appliances though. You may want to look into renting a water softener like we do.
Crystal Paine says
Thanks for the suggestion! I didn’t know you could rent one. I’d love more details on the pricing on that and whether it works for the whole house?
Chris says
Yes it is for the whole house. Mine is $85 every six months, but in my rental houses it’s a bit more. Look up water conditioning companies in your area. I would have several come out and give estimates because there are different types of systems. We went with a locally owned business instead of a franchise type, just personal preference. If something goes wrong they come out and fix or replace the unit at no charge.
Crystal Paine says
Thanks so much!
Nicole says
It’s also not good for your clothes. I totally get budgeting for it – we waited 2 years for ours, but it made such a huge difference in ways I never even expected.
Crystal Paine says
Oh! I hadn’t even thought about our clothes! Thank you for mentioning that!
cw says
There is a difference between water filters and water softners which aren’t as expensive. Softners are a lot cheaper and they are for hard ward. You don’t really need a whole house filter – most fridges have them if you get water and ice from there or you can have a filter installed at your main facet. That’s for taste.
Crystal Paine says
We have a water filter that we use for drinking water, but we’re wanting to get a whole house system since our water is so hard!
cw says
A water softener is like a water heater – it gets installed at the water main. If you know someone who’s handy it’s not that hard to install and you pick one up at Home Depot. Filter’s are about taste mostly unless you live someone and are getting water directly from your own well. You seem to live in a subdivision so you’re probably hooked into a water department – the water is safe but you may not like the taste. Whole system water FILTERS are expensive but not necessary. You can get a system for both – but again expensive. So easiest most cost effective is going to be water softener at the main for the hard water and a filter installed under your kitchen sink for taste – or a fridge with good filter.
Now i want to as an older mother gently nudge you – I have sister in law who does the “we only wash our hair once a week thing and it works fine” It doesn’t. Her kids were teased because of their oily hair – they hated it but parents insisted this was what they were going to do. Also had scalp problems. Some people need to wash their hair more frequently – it looks dirty then it needs to be washed – if the scalp is irritated then it needs exfoliation just like the face. If other people are commenting that someone’s hair is dirty – that’s gross. Sometimes darker colors show the oil faster. Your daughter’s have beautiful hair – provide them with quality hair care products (and skin products as they reach adolescence) and let them figure out what’s optimal for their hair. Irritated scalps may need different products and more frequent washings. And never underestimate what adolescent hormones can do.
Crystal Paine says
Thanks for the information on water softeners versus filters! We only have known of people investing $3,000 or so to install a whole house system so that’s what I assumed we’d need to do.
And just to clarify: I usually only wash my hair every 5-7 days because that works for me because I’ve trained my hair and I’m not dealing with teenage hormones, but please know that I would never, ever insist that anyone else do this (I’m not sure where you assumed that was the case with my girls. I’ve certainly never said anything like that online?).
I’m guessing you must be a new follower because I’m a BIG believer in doing what is best for each individual child… which is why we’ve invested in multiple products to help our girls with their hair and skin and I’m teaching them how to use them to care for their hair and skin. And please know that no one is commenting anything about my kids’ hair being dirty and no one is teasing my kids about oily hair.
[email protected] says
When hair is bleached and washed only once every 5 days, it will never look good. It has nothing to do with the filter. It has to do with your laziness and depression. Sad to see the girls following in your footsteps, being unwashed. And you wonder why everyone in the family is made fun of and can’t keep friends. Try practicing good hygiene habits. Never seen more socially awkward, insecure, and unattractive people.
Crystal Paine says
Tammy: It makes me so sad that someone I used to consider a good friend when I was a teenager would spend so much time writing the untruthful and unkind comments you have written here over the years.
I usually just delete your comments because I want this to be an uplifting and encouraging place, but you’ve been heavy on my heart and since I don’t have another way to contact you, I am responding to this comment in hopes that you will see this and take to heart what I want to say.
Based upon your comments, it’s clear to me that visiting this blog is very upsetting to you and isn’t something that brings life or hope or positive help to you. I’d like to gently ask that you take some time away from my blog to consider why it’s so upsetting to you.
I know you’ve said many times in comments that you don’t like my blog and plan to unsubscribe. I’d like to encourage you to go ahead and do that and look for other blogs that would better serve you.
Please know that I think of and pray for you often and pray that you’re able to find good friends and encouragement and joy right where you are in life. I’ll always be grateful for the friendship we had as teenagers.
Lisa Lawton says
You handled that beautifully. I think I will join you in praying for your former friend. You and your girls are beautiful. ❤️ Thank you for your excellent example of grace & forgiveness.

Thank you Crystal for leaving this comment up. I will pray for her as well. This is quite a weird comment of her to leave. It definitely shows her character and not yours.

Crystal, I’m sorry you were spoken to like this. You have beautiful kids. A quote that I find insightful from years of blogging:
“Don’t Take Anything Personally – Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.” Don Miguel
Much love! Sarah
Barbara Caudle says
Crystal, your answer to your friend was very godly. She clearly has a personality issue, and does need prayer and professional help. It would be perfectly appropriate to set the boundary of blocking her at this time, until she apologizes and gets help.
Kathy says
Very kindly said Crystal. I admire your compassion and generous soul.
Jessica says
Thank you for leaving her comment, and your response. It allowed us to see what you deal with from others on a daily basis, I’m sure. Thank you for all your hard work and encouragement to others! Keep going!?
Melissa says
It’s so refreshing to see a blogger who approaches such a harsh comment with such kindness!
*On a sidenote, I just have to say that as someone with heavily processed hair (bleached and then deposit color added) who does actually only wash her hair 1-2 times a week, it isn’t unhealthy – my hairdresser has commented on how incredibly healthy my hair is because I don’t over wash it.
Whitney says
It is beyond me why someone would think it is ok to write something so hurtful and atrocious. Crystal, I’m sorry. I know the pain of that happening from a childhood friend.
lizajane says
Wow! She sounds like someone that is jealous of you and your family, and your success in life, and tries to feel better about herself by cutting you down. Very sad.

I have learned so much from your blog and thankful that you keep doing it. You handled this situation very well and I applaud you. Just keep on pushing because there are others that really enjoy your blog.

Crystal, I’m so sorry that you have to deal with someone actively seeking you out (stalking online) to say hurtful and untrue things. Wow. Your response is grace-filled and appreciate the reminder that we always have a choice no matter how egregious the behavior of another person.

Way to take the high road! You and your family are inspiring and beautiful. Tammy if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all.

Wow is all I could think when reading that comment! It’s one thing to verbally attack an adult but to bring the kids is is NEVER okay! I come from the place of if you do t have something nice to say don’t say anything at all. When has being socially awkward a bad thing we all can’t be social butterflies. My hair is washed 1-2 times a week sometimes not at all I’m not lazy or depressed it’s just not needed. I’ve been following you for years keep up the good work and wash your hair as you feel!!!’
Ann Marie Curatolo says
Dear Crystal,
I am sorry to read that you’ve been dealing with having to read, and then censor your site by deleting comments such as this, from someone who was a good friend in the past. This is the problem with some women, they don’t know how to rejoice in the success of friends and or strangers. This is one of the many problems that exist. Women should bond together and lift each other up, and not try to do the opposite.
I want to congratulate you in handling this situation with grace, and prompting you past friend to take some time to reflect.
Your response was well written and restrained, I admire the way you handled this situation. Kudos to you for being the bigger woman, with the bigger heart.
Best,
Ann Marie
Crystal Paine says
Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement!
Savannah says
Your response to this awful comment is inspiring and encourages me to try to be more graceful towards others when I may be in a similar situation. When I read the comment, my heart hurt for me because I know how I would feel if someone said this to me. Bravo to you for approaching this with kindness and concern, because it appears that’s what Tammy needs in her life, someone to care.
At the same time, I’m a fan of deleting the negativity out of your life. Ain’t nobody got time for that. As cliche as this is; life is short. I think that comment has crossed boundaries into block territory.
Stephanie says
Wow, Tammy. Just WOW! You may or may not ever read these comments that respond to your childish attack on Crystal, but on the off-chance that you do, I want to say that I will definitely pray for you. Obviously you are incredibly unhappy with your own life. Why else would you be targeting Crystal, a former friend, like this? I’m sorry to tell you that consistently reading her blog and then putting her down will not make you feel any better about yourself or your life. If you do this to her, I’m sure you do this to other people, too. Hiding behind a computer screen and keyboard is showing what a true coward (and what a sad person) you really are. If you have children of your own, I will pray for them because you are not a very good role model. There’s a great book you should read – “Friendship For Grown-Ups” by Lisa Whelchel. You could definitely benefit from some truth-telling friends in your life, but you’ll never have any with behavior like this. Of course, I’d only recommend you read this book after you sit down and spend some time reading the Bible.
Crystal, you are incredible and I know you have a good heart. Your response to this girl is filled with grace and maturity. People should be honored to be your friend. God bless you and your family, Crystal. You help and inspire so many people on a daily basis. If someone feels otherwise, they really should find a new hobby besides trolling blogs and leaving mean comments. This girl has given us all someone to add to our prayer lists.
Samantha W. says
Stephanie,
THANK YOU for posting exactly what I was thinking after reading the comment.
It is 100% obvious that Tammy is not happy in her life and finds joy in bringing others down.
Crystal- thank you for approaching this haters comment with love and compassion. Your words were eloquently written. I appreciate that.
Donna says
I’m with all of these women that applaud your response. I also have bleached hair that I wash every 7 days and sometimes laziness and depression. Lol.
This woman clearly has issues and you would certainly be justified in blocking her. Eliminate the toxicity.
Lea says
I had no idea these existed! What a great idea!
I do encourage you to buy a whole-house filter when you can. Hard water can make your appliances (dishwasher, clothes washer, etc.) wear out much quicker. We had terrible water when we moved in (our area still does) 18 years ago but we replace our appliances at about a quarter the rate of our non-filtering neighbors – we’re only on our second washer in that time, our neighbors have been through 8! If the water is mucking with your hair, its mucking with everything else it touches too.
Enjoy!

We are hoping to make it happen some time in the next year… it’s on the goals list now that we figured out that our water was so hard!

Crystal, first, I want to thank you for this post. I came across it randomly on my Pinterest feed, at the exact time I needed to see it. My hair started going gray when I was only 16, & now I’m going on 40, so I’ve been dying my hair for a long time. For over 15 years I was dying my hair with “Natural Blue-Black,” stubborn gray coverage hair dye, but most of the gray was concentrated at my natural part & I got tired of fighting the “skunk streak” of the black and white contrasting colors as my roots grew out, so I decided to change the color I dyed my hair to something that would be less of a harsh contrast (silver lavender). It took 10 months of letting my hair grow out & wearing hat’s, then 4 appointments & a total of 12+ hours to get my hair color changed over. Just to have it ruined by my hard water!! I had to start washing my hair with jugs of distilled water, to keep my color, looking good. As you can imagine, this is a pain in the @$$ on an epic level! While my husband and I are currently working on buying a house of our own, we’re currently renting, so putting a whole house water filtration system isn’t currently possible & without your post, I would have had no idea these shower filters existed! So again thank you!
Also, I don’t know if you’ve already installed a whole house water filtration system yet, but if you haven’t, I would definitely recommend you looking into a company called RainSoft! I bought a house with my back in 2006 & within 6 months I began having issues with dizzy spells and passing out and Drs couldn’t figure out why. My neighbor came to me one day and told me they had their water tested and were told it had an excessive amount of chlorine and sulfur in it! When I told my Dr about it, he ran some blood tests and found out that when I was taking the HOT showers I love to take that I was breathing in the steamy chlorine gas from my water and basically poisoning myself!! We had a RainSoft whole house water filtration system installed and it made all the difference in my life! Easy low payments, includes an extra drinking water filter with its own spigot that they install at the kitchen sink, the water softener they use is potassium based vs chemical/salts based, they will take care of the maintenance & keeping the softener filled, and if you move they will come uninstall your unit and install it at your new place at no additional cost and even replace the unit with a different style if your old one won’t fit at the new house etc again at no additional cost!!

I’m SO glad this was helpful!! And thank you so much for the suggestion of the Rainsoft unit! I’d never heard of it before!

Definitely check them out! They’ll come out to your home and test your water for you and go over your options etc. and I have no doubt once they tell you everything that’s included when you purchase one of their units, you’ll be so glad you did!!

We have a house water softener system. It was here when we moved in. It definitely helps. That being said, my dd really struggles with dandruff. I’m wondering if this filter would help. Thanks for posting, I never would have thought about this!

You are so welcome!

Does it have a filter that has to be replaced regularly?
Sounds amazing!

Great question! Yes, they filters are $15: https://amzn.to/2EaEVOK
Here’s what they say about replacing the filter:
The shower filter is designed to last 10,000 – 12,000 gallons, or approximately 6 months of normal usage. If you have a lot of people using the shower or take long showers, then this time may be reduced. You can calculate the lifespan of the shower filter as follows:
10,000 / (Number of showers per day x Duration of shower x GPM of shower head) = Total number of days
On average, Americans take one 8-10 minute shower per day, using a 2.4 GPM shower head.
Additionally, the chlorine level of your water plays a part in the lifespan of the shower filter. If you have high levels of chlorine, then the lifespan of the shower filter may be reduced.
