When I saw the Little House Inspired Molasses Snow Candy recipe on ThricetheSpice, I knew my kids would want to try it.
And this week was the perfect week to try it — since we got over 8 inches of snow! The recipe was really easy to make, though it seemed like we had to stir the mixture on the stove for a long time.
It was finally ready to pour over the snow and it worked just exactly like I had pictured it would when we had read about it in Little House in the Big Woods. (We did have a little trouble getting it to drizzle and it clumped up — as you can see from the pictures.)
While the Molasses Candy didn’t taste all that amazing, it was such a fun project to do together!

My son and I did the maple syrup a couple weeks ago and it turned out great. It was so much fun too. You can see how we did it here http://www.couponcrazygirl.com/2014/01/maple-syrup-candy.html/

That’s so cool!

Snow is forecast for tonight so maybe we will be able to make some too. I think we will give it a try with maple syrup and see how it turns out.
I know my kids will love it.

We used our icecream maker to make snow cream. Easier than stirring and I’m sure you could use your blender too.
Heather says
We did this this week also, but used maple syrup. If you get the chance, try it. It’s really good.

Maple syrup is the base of the original candy from Little House in the Woods. I have always wanted to try it but I rather fear you would use up most of a jug of syrup to get it down to sugar.

They make Molasses on Snow Candy in Chapter 4 of Little House in the Big Woods at home, and Maple Syrup Candy in Chapter 8 at the dance at Grandpa’s house 🙂

My mom used to make this for us with maple syrup when we were kids. I think she got it from a book called Feed Me I’m Yours. Or maybe she got it from my great-grandmother. Either way, it’s one of my favorite things about winter.

I heard from my neighbor who did this yesterday that snow ice cream is really good. She took sweetened condensed milk and vanilla and mixed it with snow. Then she put it in the pail in the freezer. Interesting!

We made this today too and yes it took a long time stirring. My oldest son is reading through the Little House books in school and they do fun projects throughout the year. Tomorrow he can tell his teacher that he made Little House Inspired Molasses Snow Candy.

Haha! We did this yesterday too! The kids were so excited to eat snow candy….until they tasted it! We plan to try again with maple syrup or honey. So glad our snow ice cream turned out tastier! We used the So Delicious flavored coconut milk. Mmm!

This looks like so much fun! I’m half tempted to do this tomorrow!

Thanks for sharing! My kids liked the taste, but we don’t have sweets often and I think it was also the novelty of being just like Laura & Mary 🙂

Snow ice cream is great to make on a snowy day also!
Lindsey says
We do this with syrup, it is very yummy! 🙂 I’m gonna have to add some molasses to it next time though because it sounds good.

I wanted to do that SO badly when I was a little girl. What a fun mom you are! I can’t wait for the next snow day to try that out with my kids! (Although I live in Texas … So it might be a long wait … )
Emily says
Try maple syrup next time. Same idea and tasty.
Crystal Paine says
Oh, I bet that would be tastier!
Andrea says
Yeah, Grade B syrup is mindblowing. It makes you completely rethink any allegiance to modern day candies after having maple syrup candy 🙂
Molasses would just be waaaaaaaaay too strong. Also…even though I was in the prerelease group, I’m rereading your book. It’s amazing.
Crystal Paine says
Aw, you are so sweet!
And now I’ve GOT to try these again with maple syrup!

They do make maple syrup candy too, in chapter 8 at the dance at Grandpa’s house. Just make sure and don’t add sugar to the maple syrup!!! The rest of the directions are similar. My kids actually loved the molasses candy too though, ha!
