I did this for our big road trip over Christmas break and all you have to do is answer some questions to print your pass. I think the pass is be good for all children under 16 in the car (not just the 4th grader in the family) and up to 3 adults. The pass stays valid until the august before school is back, so basically if you have a 4th grader now this can be used thru the end of this summer. With that being said, we ended up not needing ours because of the government shutdown. The Grand Canyon gates were wide open for anyone to come in for free and no one was around to check for tickets that you should buy at a self-serve station at Death Valley either. The 3 other parks we were going to visit (Petrified Forest, Arches and Canyonlands) were all completely closed due to no rangers being available to enforce laws and no roads being plowed after a big snow storm around new years. Would have been nice to visit the other places since I am not sure I would ever have the chance of going back. Still saw many amazing sites!

Thanks for sharing! And yeah, it’s really sad how the shutdown affected the national parks. I’m an avid national park visitor, and it ruined some of my big hiking plans earlier this year! So sorry you didn’t get to see Arches, Petrified, or Canyonlands. All three are amazing — especially Arches!! -Meg, MSM Team
