EntreLeadership — You all know how much I love Dave Ramsey, so it’s no surprise that I would love his new book, EntreLeadership. However, I wasn’t expecting to love it just as much as I have.
It’s packed–and I do mean packed–with tried-and-tried information, practical application, and fantastic inspiration. As a small business owner with a few employees and sub-contractors, I’ve gleaned so much from this book. In fact, I’ve only been able to read a chapter or less each day as there’s so much to think about and consider in each page. And I’m already ready to go back and re-read it!
If you are a small business owner, I’d highly, highly recommend this book. Dave can be a bit blunt and brash sometimes, but he’s got amazing wisdom and business experience to share.

Little Town on the Prairie — We’re nearing the end of the Little House series and I think the stories aren’t quite as exciting for young children, but so far, my kiddos are still loving this series and never want me to stop reading when I finish a chapter! I’m hoping we can finish the last two books in this series before the end of the year. We’ll see!
Currently reading: Kisses from Katie and Getting Things Done . You can see all of the books I’ve read in 2011 so far here. Read all of my book reviews here.
Have you read any good books recently?

I just read “More Than A Good Bible Study Girl” from Lysa Teurkerst. Very good!

I finished EntreLeadership last week too, I found many strategies that I plan to implement at home as well. I haven’t even read the bonus chapters and agree, I’m ready to re-read it already.

These aren’t kid books, but what I’ve been reading. A 5 book series about King Hezekiah by Lynne Austin. I CAN NOT PUT THEM DOWN! She is an amazing author and brings that time and the people to life like you can’t imagine! I actually had to read a little ahead last night because I was at such a tense part and it was so late I wanted to go to bed, but the Israelites were surrounded by half a million Assyrians (gruesome people) ready to knock down their walls! I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep not knowing! LOL

Too funny. We also are reading the Little House series and have just two more books to read. My daughter is 4 and I am just amazed that she will sit and listen to it, even without a lot of pictures. But I think it’s great that she will and her comprehension is so awesome too. She remembers events that happened several books ago.

I’ve been reading Malcolm Gladwell’s, “Outliers.”. It is so intriguing. Highly recommend it!

Son has really been into the Magic Tree House series. Some are better than others. I like the more educational ones like on rain forest or revolutionary war.

I read those books as a kid, and I do agree that they get a little mature toward the end. I can see how a kid would get bored with them because at a point the books are no longer about kids on the prairie but about Laura getting married. I loved historical fiction as a kid though- your girls would probably like all the American Girl books, the historical ones were my favorite!

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
Abraham Lincoln: A Presidential Life (recorded book)
Photography for Scrapbookers
Chasing the Light: Improving Your Photography with Available Light
Was on the road all month which is a good time to read!

If you have not heard of them, your children will enjoy Caddie Woodlawn and Strawberry Girl.

For Little House fans, I would highly recommend a visit to DeSmet, SD, if time and budget allows. We visited the Laura Ingalls Wilder museum and homestead there last summer. I thought it might be a little cheesy, but it’s not. It is well done and very interesting. We enjoyed the Little House books, but my daughter is very concrete — she learns a lot more from hands-on experiences than reading — so she learned a lot more about history by visiting the homestead. It’s hands-on, with lots of things for kids to do, like washing clothes with an authentic old-fashioned manual clothes washer, etc.

We’re also reading the little house series. We will be starting Little Town on the Prairie. I think my kids struggled through The Long Winter. I think the winter dragged on for my kids as well as Laura. I love the series!! When I was a little girl I wore the cover off 3 of my books from reading them so much. We’re reading from the set I used when I was little, including the 3 with taped covers. My kids love that we are reading from “Mommy’s little girl books.”

I’m in the process of finishing EntreLeadership and Kisses from Katie as well. They were both at Catalyst and were so inspirational to listen to!
Another author there was Jim Collins who just released a new book, Great is a Choice, that I’m trying to finish. It is phenomenal! I’m also re-reading Made to Stick and have a million other business books on my bookshelf that I can’t wait to read.
I would read all day if I could!

Just got my copy of Kisses from Katie in the mail today!

Other books I would recommend are:
The Secret Garden
Island of the Blue Dolphin
Tom Sawyer
Heidi
Huck Finn
Hattie Big Sky
I forgot how old you kids are. Mine are 10, 10,8, 4. We actually have listened to all of these on tape. We read the little house series and then about a year later listened to them on tape. My kids loved it. We would listen during breakfast and lunch and if we were going to be in the car for an hour or longer. They love the pioneering type books/books on tape.
I have on recommendation that the Box Car Kids are a good series. I’m not sure of the age range, but several parents recommended them.
If your kids like the pioneering era, consider taking them of a living museum. We have one with in an hours drive and my kids ask to go every year. They are awesome!!

ok, I just came from looking at all your books read in 2011 and my jaw dropped!!! I like to read, but can’t seem to find the “quiet” time to do it. When do you read? Also, when do you read to your kids? I have 4 kids ages 10-3. We’ve started the Little House series, but I have a hard time being consistent on a good time of day for it. Suggestions?
Melanie says
If you homeschool a good time to read is just after lunch. It’s a great way for everyone to rest and relax after a morning of school work. If you don’t homeschool I would think I would read to my kids while they are eating their after school snack. It would be a great way to calmly transition into home life after being at school all day. It definitely has to be a priority to find time to do it either way.
Kelly says
What about at snack time?
I allow mine to doodle on paper (with only pencil) while listening.

I also love Little House series, I’ve read their series almost fourth times which includes my original language. I just love how wonderful and warm the Ingals family are 🙂

I’m a big Dave Ramsey fan, too. EntreLeadership is definitely a great, quick read. TMMO is a classic though – I agree.
I just finished How to Win Friends and Influence People, which was just fantastic (and works). I’ve been trying to get into the Six Sigma Leader, but can’t seem to get through the first section. Anyone read that one?
Courtney says
We started the series and then got stuck with Little Town on the Prairie. Laura is so descriptive about the slough and the machines- which is wonderful, but I think it was just too much for the younger kids. So I went ahead and just read the rest of the books by myself! As a matter of fact I just checked out the final one and finished it this week- On the Way Home- a diary about their journey to Missouri with a few writings from Rose as well.

Oops, meant to say that we are also reading our Advent book of this year, which is Bartholomew’s Passage. We read Jotham’s Journey last year, and the kids were super excited to get started on this year’s book!!
Does anyone else do a book for Advent? Other than the Jesse tree devotions?
Dawn says
I recently finished George W. Bush’s autobiography “Decision Points”. I know it came out last year, but I had to wait for it to be available at my library. : )
I really liked it. I don’t tend to read a lot of autobiographies, but this one was good. It did take me 3 weeks to read it though. It is a very thick book, and so I read it in snatches here and there when I could!
I am currently reading First Families, about how living in the White House affects the people who live there. My daughter asked me if I was in a “presidential” reading phase!! LOL!!
Ellen says
Have you heard of the other Little House books? They go back to Laura’s great grandma (Martha), who was from Scotland, and then there are also the Rose books.
When I was homeschooled, we also read the Trailblazer books, which are each about a different missionary from a different place and time period. I saw them on our shelves the other day and thought your kids might enjoy them too!
Shannon says
Out of all Dave Ramsey’s books, which one would you recommend reading first? We are going to try to start the New Year out following Dave’s advice. I was wondering which one I should read first. Thank you.
Crystal says
Definitely read The Total Money Makeover first.

My 5 year old loved the Little House series up until the last two books….I don’t know if she was getting bored or if they were over her head. I ended up not even finishing “The First Four Years” with her (just finished it myself). We will definitely come back to this series again when she is a bit older. I could read these books over and over again!

Kisses for Katie sounds like a neat book!

We are reading the Little House books too. I am enjoying them so much. It always amazes me how much was expected of children at such a young age (we just finished Farmer Boy). They are encouraging as well as entertaining.
I mentioned to you on twitter that I am listening to Eat that Frog. It is excellent. Thanks so much for the recommendation. I think it might be one to buy since I have the itch the highlight half of it!

So glad you’re enjoying Eat That Frog!
