We had an impromptu and rousing game of Scrabble one night. I was excited because I actually won (I think that might be a first!)!
I had five “early” mornings as part of the Early to Rise Challenge.
We finished Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh and it was a very sad day because we all thoroughly enjoyed this book — even Jesse. 🙂
Silas helped me do a Freezer Cooking in an Hour session — and all three recipes ended up being winners (see the recipe links and more details here)!
I was especially excited because our Crockpot Refried Beans turned out beautifully!
Learning how to make friendship bracelets.
How was YOUR week?
Anne Stogner says
This may seem like a silly question, but how do you eat your meals and read at the same time? I’ve given reading during mealtimes a try and it just hasn’t worked very well for me yet. Either I’d need to stop to get one of the many things I go back and forth between the table and the kitchen for (rinsing out washrags–kids are 3 and 1 1/2, vitamins, drink refills, more food, etc.) or I was half eating/half reading and not really eating enough to finish my lunch with the kids. Do you listen to the books with a CD or some other audio version? Or eat later by yourself maybe?
Stephanie @ Housewife Mama says
Looks like you had a great week! I cant wait to start reading chapter books with my little ones!

Be sure to read the sequels to Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert O’Brien’s daughter, Jane Leslie Conly: Racso and the Rats of NIMH and R-T, Margaret and the Rats of NIMH for a continuation of the story!

I haven’t seen friendship bracelets in a loooong time! How fun! Brings back many memories. Looks like it was a nice week.

Congrats on your Scrabble win! This past week was fairly productive and I’m hoping this upcoming week will be as productive, if not more so. But, I’m also waiting to hear if my hours at work will increase permanently. I’m planning on trying your refried bean recipe as well.

How much fun making friendship bracelets! I remember doing that in middle school for hours a day sometimes!
You might have already posted about this, but I just got an email about On the Border: Kids eat free with the purchase of 1 adult entree from Monday – Thursday next week! I’m not sure if it’s just a regional thing or not!
Thanks for all your helpful hints! I bought Sparkle paper towels today at CVS 2/$10 and got $2 ECB back! I wasn’t able to print the coupons, but it’s still a good deal! There was nothing in the store indicating the price, but I checked it at the machine since I had seen it on your site!

I know! It’s a bittersweet thing… we’re trying to embrace and enjoy the moments. Because I know they won’t last forever!

I’ve mentioned to you before how my 3-year-old Gideon loves seeing pictures of Silas. Recently I was going through my old pictures and found a picture of your family that you’d sent me when we corresponded as teenagers. I showed it to my husband and then to Gideon: “Look, this is Silas’ mommy, a long time ago!” He looked at it, unimpressed, and passed the picture back to me.
“I want to see Silas,” he said.
“Sorry,” I had to tell him, “Mommy doesn’t have a photo of Silas; he’s in the computer.” 🙂
Crystal says
That’s funny! And wow, you still have a picture from way back when?!?

Friendship bracelets… 🙂 That brought back lots of good memories.

There are more books in this series ;o) my kids loved them!

Oh, I made so many of those friendship bracelets when I was younger! I used to stick a large safety pin through the knot and pin it to my sock, then sit on the sofa with that leg propped up on the other to make them. 🙂 So funny…haven’t thought about that in years.
We had a great (and exhausting) week. My husband was out of town, so it was just me and my son until Thursday night. Did quite a bit of de-cluttering and freezer cooking and I’m very proud of my progress.
Crystal says
Now *that’s* a creative way to make a friendship bracelet!
Nicole says
I used to pin them to my pant leg at the knee. I think I like this taping them to the table way better!

Do you think that book is suitable for a soon to be 4 yr old? I have a little grandson and have been trying to think of age appropriate reading materials for his mother to read to him.
Cheryl says
For a 4yo, I would suggest some of the outstanding picture books that have won the Caldecott Medal. Try books by Maurice Sendak, Beatrix Potter, Rosemary Wells. Mrs. Frisby is assigned reading for my 7th grader. We did read it about 2 years ago, so are looking forward to a fresh perspective from the lessons.
Crystal says
Hmm, I think it’s probably a little above his level. You can find some other ideas that might be more suited to his level here:

Just a quick tip, If you have a clip board, it makes making friendship bracelets a lot easier. You can move the board wherever you go.
Congrats on a great week!

Great suggestion!

I know what you mean about your whole family being sad when you finish a good read-aloud. We’re a few chapters from the end of Tumtum & Nutmeg: Adventures Beyond Nutmouse Hall and we just want it to keep going. Thankfully, there are four other Tumtum and Nutmeg books in the series 🙂
Thanks to you, I’ve added the Crock-Pot “Refried” Beans to my meal plan for this week. Our family loves refried beans, but I’ve never been able to get them right.
Also, how did you go about teaching the girls to make the friendship bracelets? I know my oldest would love to learn, but I don’t really know where to start.

Thanks for the reading suggestion!
I taught the girls based upon what I remembered from growing up, but there are lots of great tutorials and videos available online, too.

The intensity on Kathrynne’s face in those pictures is priceless 🙂

She was so, so determined about making her bracelet. I loved seeing her intent on a handiwork project like that — and she was so fulfilled to finish hers. {She actually decided to make hers into a bookmark instead of a bracelet, which I thought was creative!}

I remember making lots of friendship bracelets as a girl. 🙂 I bet you girls loved it!
