I’m excited to be speaking at the MOPS National Convention in Kansas City in October.
As part of their promotional campaign, they asked me to shoot a quick video with a money-saving tip. I thought some of you would enjoy watching this video with two quick ways to save at least $5 to $10 on your grocery bill in less than 10 minutes.

What’s your best tip for shaving $5-$10 off your grocery bill in 10 minutes or less?
Thank you for the tip!!!! I just goggled my local store and you were right there is a blogger for my store. I was so amazed, I live in a tiny town in Vermont! I am very new to couponing so this will be a great help! Thank you for all your hard work! I love your site!
I was the Spiritual Director for my MOPS group this past year and I am so sad that I am not going to be able to make it to Kansas City this year. I was already sad because I was going to miss out on Beth Moore but now that I am also missing out on hearing you speak I am even more sad. Now I know what I am going to be saving my money for this next year to make it more affordable.
Oh how I wish I was going to MOMcon! I’ll have to settle for the Leadership Connection this weekend. I’ve learned so much from you but some of the ways I save are to only carry cash and budget for less than I think I will need for the week. It’s amazing how much money I actually don’t need to be spending.
Know the stores in your area and shop at the one with the lowest prices on your family staples. I’ve started doing my main weekly shopping at Aldis because I can easily save $5-10 on things I can’t coupon…like:
Milk $2.50 vs 3.29
3 pack of peppers, 2.49 vs 4.99
3 lb bag of apples 2.99 vs 5.49
There is $5 on 3 items alone. Shopping at Aldis let’s me buy more of the foods I want my family to eat (fruits and veggies) and saves money.
Price matching often saves me a few bucks each week. Absolutely shop the sales and use coupons too!
Take a minute to check your receipt before you leave the store. Did all your sales, coupons, markdowns, and deals register properly?
Yes! It is not uncommon for me to find mistakes, and usually around $3. It annoys me, but I’ve just had to add checking for errors as part of the shopping experience.
I’ve always wondered, how do you afford to print so much? Did you invest in a laser printer?
We’ve found a laser printer to be well worth the investment.
If you live near a Smart & Final, you can print a $10/$50 coupon from their Facebook page! Not a consistent way to save $10, but good for this week. =)
I know is sound crazy, but I make my menus for the entire month. I go to the last page of the Woman’s Day magazine, where they have all the meals planned out. You can also find it here: http://www.womansday.com/food-recipes/month-of-menus/
I only worry about menu planning once a month, then on Monday grab a list (which is also on the site.) If I see next week I need Panco Breadcrumbs and they are on sale this week then I pick them up. Planning saves me so much time and money. Plus, most of my veggies will last 2 weeks so celery that is on sale this week is snacked on this week then used in Chicken Soup next.
Our Kroger in Michigan is no longer taking internet printed coups.
That frightens me!! Our kroger already stopped doubling…Is this next?
One of our Krogers did that in IL but then the other one did take them. I found out later it was because they were getting a lot of forgeries. Just that store. They were trying to figure out where the forgeries were coming from and once they narrowed it down they got better training to the cashiers and now they take them once again. Hopefully yours will start taking them again
Plan your trip using the sale ads. Look at the on line store match ups and print the printable ones from there.
Take one snack/convenience food off your list and look for a homemade version! Example: granola bars, fruit leather.
Think outside the box. Sometimes organic goes on sale and is less expensive to buy than non-organic. Organic oranges were on sale for $.99/pound a few weeks ago, and we were able to enjoy them for less money than non-organic oranges. 🙂
We just did the same thing today.. Chuck’s Produce has reg. mangoes on sale for $1 each. but my DH was diligent and found organic mangoes 2 for $0.99 🙂 Spent$7, and now have three trays freezing for smoothies in the future:) (Raw food diet staple in this house!!!)
Always have a meal plan and a list but be flexible, too. This week when I found organic russet potatoes in 5 LB bags for $1 each, I bought three and made some adjustments to my meal plans. We won’t be eating them all in one week, but I’ll include them in my meal plans over several weeks.
We eat 25-50 pounds of potatoes a week at my house; about 7 pounds in a meal. Your comment made me smile.
Shop the grocery ad (ie – meal plan around what’s on sale that week!). And…I’ll be at the MOPS convention this fall too. (:
Excellent tip. And yay! I’ll look forward to meeting you!
I’ll be at MOPS convention! So excited to get to hear you speak!
Yay! Looking forward to meeting you!
Eat a snack before leaving your house! If you shop hungry, you might buy extras that you do not need!
