Emily from Our Frugal Happy Life emailed me this morning and I just had to share her email (she gave me permission):
Over the weekend, our church had a Pork Chop dinner and somehow I ended up making the homemade rolls (my husband is the pastor…that explains it! :)). My husband absolutely loves your Make-Ahead Butterhorns, so that’s what he thought I should make.
Little did I know, I needed to make 18 DOZEN Butterhorn rolls for this dinner! I did it over the course of three days using my bread machine (thank goodness for that!).
The rolls were a huge hit at the dinner; everyone was raving about them! There were some leftover, but people were buying those up very quickly because they loved them so much!
The most ironic part? I can’t even eat Butterhorns because I am gluten-free. I have actually never tasted one!
I thought you would get a smile out of this – thank you for such a great recipe! It is well-loved in our small town here in Wisconsin.
P.S. I did a bunch of math to figure out how much these cost me and based on my prices for the ingredients, they are about $0.15 each. Super frugal! (That’s the reason I made them for the dinner…buying rolls from the bakery would have cost significantly more!) -Emily from Our Frugal Happy Life
Wow! You are amazing.
Wondering if you have tried to replace some or all of the butter in the recipe with a healthier oil than butter or maybe a reduced amount?
I have never tried! I don’t think my husband would like it much if I did that. 😉
It might be worth a shot, though!
Sooo. When I’m thinking what something costs to make it. I factor in my labor as that is one of the costs. How many hours of labor did this 18 dozen cost and what did you figure your pay per hour to be? Not trying to dumb down a wonderful donation but to claim cost has to include it all
Hmmm…that’s a great question! Honestly, these are not labor intensive IF you have a bread machine (which I do). For each batch, it takes about 10 minutes to get everything going. The bread machine runs for 1 hr. 40 min. Then it takes me about 7-8 minutes to roll them out and another 25(ish) minutes to get 2 dozen through the oven. I did that process 9 times over three days.
Since this was a donation for the youth at church who hosted the dinner, I considered my time a donation (and I also donated most of the ingredients). Thankfully, I am in a situation where I can do this (I stay at home full time with our daughter). It would not be feasible for everyone!
I just tried your Butterhorn recipe this past week. I was slightly skeptical that they could be as good as I’d heard from everyone else who has tried them . . . but they were! I loved the recipe! I’ll definitely be making these again.
Yay! I’m so glad you loved them!
What a fun story, thanks for sharing! By the way, I have that same picture frame in our home. It’s so pretty 🙂
Thanks 🙂 I have no idea where that picture frame came from…probably our wedding 4+ years ago. Who knows – but we like it, too!
That’s a crazy amount of baking! Awesome. 🙂
Thanks! I neglected to mention that I also have a 3 month old daughter. 🙂 She sat in her rocker & grinned at me quite a bit (and I tried to plan the baking to happen during her nap times, lol!). Some of my friends thought I was crazy but it really wasn’t that bad!
I don’t think my bread maker would handle that big of a batch. Did you 1/2 it or 1/4 it for the bread maker, Emily?
Donna – I did 9 batches in my bread machine. Each batch was 1/2 of the recipe that Crystal linked in the post above. I would not try any more than that either! 🙂
I actually use the ingredient measurements from this recipe: http://lifeasmom.com/2010/04/chocolate-butterhorns-perfect-for-freezing-perfect-for-anytime.html. I just don’t add the chocolate chips (obviously) for dinner rolls. I will say that I usually at least 5 cups of flour per batch.
Thank you!!
You’re so welcome! I hope you enjoy them – they really are easy to make (and according to my husband, delicious!).
Thanks for sharing this, how exciting! Our family eats bread a lot for meals, it is an inexpensive filler for “lots of bellies” to feed. Can’t wait to try this recipe!
