If you’ve been reading here in the last year or two, you know that I love me some essential oils. I slowly started dabbling with using them after rave reviews from people I trust.
While I think some of the claims about them you’ll read on the internet are way over-dramatized (i.e. “MY DOG WAS CURED OF CANCER BECAUSE OF OILS!!!”), I have fallen madly in love with a number of different oils and we use them on a very regular basis.
Here are three reasons I especially love essential oils:
1. I Love That They Last Seemingly Forever
Okay, so technically I have used up a few bottles of essential oils over the past two years, but because you only need a few drops (or less than that!), one bottle can last for months and months and months.
2. I Love That They Have Multiple Uses
I love that one bottle of essential oils can be used for dozens of different things. You can mix it with coconut oil and rub it on the bottom of your feet, you can diffuse it, you can put a few drops in your bath, you can make homemade cleaners with it, you can use it in homemade personal care products, and on and on it goes.
3. I Love That They Are So Inexpensive
Because they have multiple uses and because they seem to last just about forever, essential oils truly can be a very frugal alternative to paying for over-the-counter drugs or other herbal remedies.
Some of the bottles and brands can be quite pricey. But there are other kinds and brands on the market that are very reasonably priced.
Why I Don’t Sell Essential Oils
With my self-proclaimed love of essential oils, so many people have been shocked to discover I have no interest in selling them. I have been strongly encouraged over and over again by various consultants of essential oil companies to sign up under them and sell oils.
But unless some major something or other swoops in and completely and drastically alters my life, I don’t foresee myself ever selling oils.
There are a number of reasons why I don’t sell oils:
I don’t need to start another business. My life is plenty full without me signing up with a company and then having to mess with all the details involved with running that oil business.
I know that it’s been a great business for some of my friends, but most of them only do oils as their business — not oils plus writing and speaking and blogging. I may sometimes try to push too hard, but I do know my limits on this one.
I am not passionate enough about oils to sell them. I think that it’s fantastic that some of my friends are making an amazing income selling oils, but almost every single one of them who is, is intensely passionate about essential oils.
They love them fiercely. They love talking about them. They can’t not talk about them. I like essential oils, but not enough to live and breathe them as a business.
I don’t think anyone should sign up to sell something just to make money. Unfortunately, one of the big reasons people have tried to get me to sign up to sell essential oils is so I can make “a lot of money”. I’ve had people tell me I am just throwing money away to not sell them.
I’ve had people even yell at me saying I was being ridiculous to not sell them because I could make so much money to give away. If you have a choice, I don’t think you should ever do something just to make money. Period.
If there’s not heart and passion behind it, there’s no fulfillment that comes from that. And it’s a very quick way to set yourself up for being miserable and exhausted.
I love my friends too much — and wouldn’t want to hurt relationships. So here’s one of the big reasons I don’t sell essential oils: I have good friends who sell different brands. I’m not brand loyal and like multiple brands. So how would I ever be able to choose which brand to sign up under?
Regardless of what brand I signed up with and who I signed up under, I think it could potentially hurt relationships or cause awkwardness. Like I were playing favorites with people I love dearly. It’s not worth it for me to hurt relationships I hold dear just for the sake of earning an income.
I am not brand loyal. I mentioned it above, but it deserves it’s own paragraph. I could never choose which brand to sign up with, because I like some of the oils from some brands and other oils from other brands.
I like to be able to pick and choose my favorites from among the brands instead of feeling like I can only stick with one brand because that’s the brand I sell.

I am new to essential oils, and wanting to try some (I am not brand loyal and have tried samples of a couple different brands). Do you have ones that you would recommend (oils and brands), for someone just starting out, that can only afford a few at a time? (I, like you, would like to try different ones from different brands, but can’t afford to experiment with all of them). Thanks!

I like to pick and choose which brands I prefer and am not particularly loyal to just one either. I love the NOW brand for myself, and also love Plant Therapy as well, because they have a wonderful Kid Safe line of oils. I have debated on selling them to not only make a little extra, but to help educate myself and others. I am slightly passionate about it and need to learn more before diving in. 🙂 I had gone to a class where it was ok to ingest certain oils. I put lemon in my water and had a couple of cupcakes made with some drops of oil that were supposedly ok to ingest. The next morning, I had a huge headache. I am not sure if my headache was associated with the oils or something else at the time, but that is where we really need to educate ourselves. For now, I stick with diluting most oils in a carrier.

I enjoy using essential oils as well for many different things; however, I am definitely not one to sell them–mainly for the reason that I’m not a salesperson. If I find something that works for my family, I do pass it (the information) along, but that’s about as far as it goes unless I just give them some of mine!

Is this the same Healthy Living Bundle from Dec 2014? I don’t want to buy it again if it is.

I already work 60 hours a week plus my other duties and always find the time to talk Plants if they want to do EO I will point them in the right direction but I don’t want hassle
Thanks

I have thought about selling two different products lately and have come to some of the same conclusions. Time really is a huge factor! I have recently entered the blogging community, teach piano lessons, and have a baby, so I have to be realistic about what I can do!!!

This is NOT about oils. But I wanted you to know that the ad playing that is a video (right above the Walgreen deals you listed) keeps throwing me off what ever I am reading and taking me to the add. I have tried to read your reasons for not selling oils 6 times, and each time I loose my place when it abruptly takes me to the video ad. Just thought you should know, Crystal.
Crystal Paine says
Argh! I’m so sorry about that! Do you know what the video is about? If you can let me know, I can block it on my end. It’s not showing up for me.

I feel like I should post and say, most of those people, “selling” oils are doing it to help empower families towards healthier less toxic lifestyles. My main reason is to help others to better health and educate others on proper uses. I have a Bachelors Degree in the Health Sciences- Dietetcs, but even with that like a lot of things in the natural realm is self education, just like these e-courses offered in the bundle to help equip moms and dads to have more natural options in their family’s health care.
I love essential oils!! Let’s keep the comments positive and not let the comments be against those who do sell and educate others. 🙂

I am starting using essential oils for more and more things lately. Luckily I do not have any friends that sell oils, because I would honestly prefer not to buy them from a friend. Like you, I am not brand loyal. Also, I do a lot of research when I decide which oils to buy. Oils are great for many things but they are not something anyone should use without educating themselves about them – which are okay to use internally, which need to be diluted, what are unsafe for children.
I do know some people, not friends, that sell oils. All of them are passionate, but not all of them are as knowledgable as I think they should be to be selling oils to people and recommending how they use them. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve seen a post from someone on Facebook mentioning some kind of allergy, illness or skin condition and someone selling oils admits that they don’t know what the person has, but recommends oils they should use. How can you recommend oils when you don’t know what you’re dealing with? I love essential oils, but they are not always the answer to everything.
This is why I prefer to order oils online direct from companies and not from companies that use MLM-style selling. Too much of the focus of those selling is on “making money”. And how they make more money is by getting others to sell the products, too. When they’re telling you how much money you could be making, they’re really thinking of how much money they’ll make off of you.

Paula, I understand how you feel. There are people out there who just want to make money. However, those people are not limited to one profession. Friends of mine have said their parents want them to be a certain profession due to the money they would be making.
All of us sell something. When a person goes to a job interview, if they cannot “sell themselves” well enough by being punctual, polite, and professional, they most likely will continue their job search.
As far as claiming that a product will cure someone of a disease, well, as soon as I see claims like that, I quit reading. Natural remedies are amazing; however, people often need to make lifestyle changes too in order to be healthier. 🙂

Thanks for your honesty Crystal. I bought my first oils because you (and others) kept talking about them. I like them and think they have real benefits but I also am not super gung-ho about them. I think they are one option for a lot of different things. Different strokes for different folks– or even the same person at different times in their life.
