Utterly brilliant! I can’t wait to do this with the pile of bricks that we have!
This duplo idea is GREAT! Thanks for sharing!!
excellent idea!
I LOVE THIS!
What a cool idea- too bad I got rid of mine.
Great idea, and so glad I noticed it. Thanks for sharing!
I saw this in a magazine a few years ago and thought it was a brilliant idea but never got around to doing it. I really should!
I wonder if this would be good for my four year old. She doesn’t read, and only recognizes a few letters here and there. I think I might try. Great idea.
I used to be a teacher, and I think that this can easily be adapted for a four year old. I would recommend starting with just letters. You could have her play games where she finds the letter that makes the sound you call out for the ones she knows, to finding the letter of the letter name you call out for ones she doesn’t know. As she learns more and more, she can put them in ABC order, and eventually use them to spell out words. I used to do something similar in my Kindergarten classroom
Also, if you want this to be something that she grows with, you could write the letters with a Sharpie, and when she’s ready, “erase” it with finger nail polish remover and write words for sight word practice.
I’m looking to start teaching my four year old a little geography, but everything seems to advanced for her. Anyone else trying to teach a little geography to their kids? Just wondering if anyone has come across something simple geared toward preschoolers.
What type of geography are you wanting to teach her? Neighborhood level/towns and streets/states/countries/continents? I teach 1st grade and even 6 and 7 year olds have trouble sometimes differentiating between towns, states, countries, and continents.
When I was little, my parents bought a nice globe for me and my brother to play with. I don’t remember them actually sitting down and showing us where things were (except maybe where we lived), but I enjoyed just looking at it and exploring it.

They have a geography lesson (pdf download) for 2.5-6 yr olds. I have it but I have no idea how or where I got it (maybe as a freebie?) as I can’t find it anywhere on their site. I am not sure if it is exactly what you are looking for. Maybe if you write them they could tell you a little more about it?

look really neat, although I have not used them myself. They may be a little old for your child, but you can certainly use some things in there, such as the suggested reading books that relate to each state.
This website is one of my all time favorites for great fun. Love how she isn’t afraid to include her children in things that many might think are ‘over their heads.’
I have done this to help my kids learn the books of the bible.
Ok…seriously, love it! My kids can read; however, it’s a great tool for learning to make proper sentences and/or more discriptive sentences!!
Good job!
This is nothing short of genius! I love re-purposing things and my boys barely play with their duplos anymore. I think I might try using a label maker, instead of writing directly on the block. Any other ideas on how to label the blocks?
I read this post and made the blocks during my kids’ naptime; my 5 year old is so excited and has already put together words on his own. What a great idea to keep the learning going during summer break!
Genius. Pure Genius.
I love this idea!! I am so doing this; my middle child is only 2 (my oldest is 13 and is QUITE the reader already
) but it’s never too early to learn how to read IMO
Thanks for sharing!!
I love this idea!!! When my oldest was learning his sight words we turned Candyland into a sight word game. On every space I wrote in a sight word, he couldn’t move forward unless he knew the word. I still have it & look forward to using it again with my younger two. I may try this too instead of flashcards though.
