Super Savings Saturday: I stayed home, popped pills, and drank Sprite

You want to know the truth about my week? I have no clue what we spent on food or even much of what my family ate this week.

I came down with The Ravaging Fever Flu (yes, doesn’t that just sound nicer than calling it “the flu”??) on Monday afternoon. By Tuesday morning, I had called my mom and begged her to come take over so I could lie on the couch and moan. I don’t really know what took place on Wednesday and Thursday except that I was miserable and out of it.

The Grandmas took over childcare, thankfully. And me? Well, I pretty much never drink soda pop and rarely ever take medicine but that all went out the window this week. If I took ibuprofen, I could get my fever down below 103 and Sprite was the only thing that sounded good to me (except, go figure, McDonald’s Apple Pies!). So I popped pills, drank Sprite, and was a couch potato.

Thankfully, I’m finally starting to feel better, but I’m just going to not worry about what we spent on food this week. When Mom’s sick, survival mode ensues and sticking to the grocery budget isn’t really high on the priority list.

Next week I plan to be back in full force… only would someone please tell me how to kick this Sprite habit? Because that stuff is expensive!

What?!? Moms aren’t allowed to get sick! I wish I could offer soda habit kicking tips, but my daily diet Coke is one habit I’m not willing to budge on yet. It’s expensive, but, to me, it’s worth EVERY penny! I’m glad you’re feeling better.

RACHEL March 21, 2010 at 7:46 pm

@Alison,
HAHAHA!! I Completely Understand And Agree! :)
It’s High On My To Do List~ BUT It Just Hasn’t Become Priority Yet… (It’s One Of My Guilty Pleasures In Life)
We’ve Gone Vegan And Kicked That Nasty Habit But The Soda Thing?!? :)

Carrie March 20, 2010 at 12:02 pm

No, we’ll just tell you who’s got the Sprite for a great deal, which will only get you more hooked, lol.

Lisa March 20, 2010 at 12:03 pm

Grab the Sprite at Kroger this week for $0.79 each if you have one near you! Isn’t it wonderful to have family nearby now?

Crystal March 20, 2010 at 12:28 pm

@Lisa, I’m SO thankful! We are very blessed!

Jessica March 20, 2010 at 12:16 pm

I am so glad to hear your are feeling better. We’ve had sickness running like crazy around here. I’m glad to hear that “survival mode” happens in other houses!

Cortney March 20, 2010 at 12:21 pm

Hopefully it’s Diet Sprite – those calories add up quick, too!!!

Crystal March 20, 2010 at 12:29 pm

@Cortney, Considering that was pretty much all I consumed for 3 days, the calories weren’t really an issue. ;) But water definitely needs to be my choice now!

Frugal Fritzie March 20, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Whew, that’s rough! I’m so glad you’re feeling better. I remember my mom telling me that she used to almost enjoy getting sick when she was a kid because she got to have 7-Up and didn’t get soda any other time.

Becky March 20, 2010 at 12:35 pm

I never even noticed you weren’t posting as much! Be free – be healed sister!
Blessings,
Becky

Katie March 20, 2010 at 12:37 pm

Glad to hear you are getting better~ It sure isn’t fun to be sick!

Christy March 20, 2010 at 12:38 pm

Your week sounds almost identical to mine (minus the apple pie part). Glad you are feeling better.

Michaelene March 20, 2010 at 12:42 pm

Glad you’re feeling better! The best way we found to kick the soda habit was not to have any in the house. No matter how much I crave it, you won’t see me taking the time/effort for a special trip to go get some! The last I “bought” was 7up with a free 2-liter coupon from a Kroger mailer.

Courtney March 20, 2010 at 12:43 pm

How great to have Grandmas nearby who can help out when needed!

I used to drink Diet 7Up until I tried the Walmart store-brand imitation “Diet TwistUp” and I swear, it’s better! Same thing goes for their version of Diet Dr. Pepper, “Diet Dr. Thunder”. Much cheaper, too!

Stephanie March 20, 2010 at 12:43 pm

I’m so glad you are better. Iam thankful for grandparents living close by. (:

Julie March 20, 2010 at 12:47 pm

So sorry to hear you were sick, but so glad you’re feeling better. How wonderful that you have family nearby to help out; I pray for people — especially moms — who live far from kin.
As for the Sprite. . . I’ve never completely kicked my Diet Coke addiction, but now I allow it as a treat when I need to get gasoline at the convenience store.

Jen March 20, 2010 at 1:13 pm

Aren’t grandmas the best? So glad you are feeling better and will pray no one else in your family gets sick! You sure have the blog running well as I didn’t notice that you weren’t posting as much.

Judy March 20, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Yuck! Sorry you were so miserable! I though my allergies were bad, but I’ll take those over Ravaging Fever Flu any day! Thank goodness for grandmas! Hope you feel tip top soon!

Marion March 20, 2010 at 1:43 pm

I am so glad you posted this. We are moving into a new house next week and I am 33 weeks pregnant with my 4th baby and I felt guilty for throwing my budget out the window this week. My husband even begged me not to go to the grocery store. Glad I read your blog. I think we are going to order out and pick up super fast food for the next week or so.

Ellen March 20, 2010 at 1:46 pm

Glad you’re feeling better. In terms of the Sprite thing…maybe seltzer with lemon & lime? :)

Katie Lloyd March 20, 2010 at 2:07 pm

Sorry to hear you had such a yucky week. Thank the Lord for Grandmas who help out!!! :)

Leah March 20, 2010 at 2:07 pm

I hope you are feeling much better now.
As for kicking the Sprite… just stop. Sounds easy doesn’t it? I drank more than a 2 liter a day for years, I stopped cold turkey and haven’t looked back.

Heather March 20, 2010 at 2:14 pm

I just did this two weeks ago. I laid on my Mom’s couch all day while she took care of my kids. I got up once every couple of hours to nurse the baby and then laid back down. I just happened to get sick on my husband’s first day of work after he was unemployed and home every day for six weeks.

Marianne @TheNewFrugalMom.com March 20, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Feel better soon!

Isn’t it nice to have a bunch of OTC meds stockpiled in your medicine cabinet for weeks like this? ;-)

Jessica-MomForHim March 20, 2010 at 2:43 pm

Glad you are feeling better! I had the stomach flu last week, but mine only lasted a day. However, I did throw up 11 times, which isn’t fun when you are 7 months pregnant (or any other time!).

Sara Conley March 20, 2010 at 2:45 pm

I am actually not too worried that you’ll have problems kicking the Sprite habit. :) I used to drink a ton of Diet Dr Pepper every day for years. I just wish I could go back and do it all over again. I would probably have at least $5000 more dollars to my name considering the number of years and amount I drank. Stupid! And I’m not even going to tell you how much I wasted on eating out during that time. Oh well…now I keep one of those half liter $1 bottles of lemon juice around and we always have sugar on hand. Every couple of weeks for a treat, I’ll make a pitcher of lemonade for us. Much cheaper for the occasional sweet treat!

Meg @ Frugal Fun & Fortune March 20, 2010 at 3:38 pm

Oh no! Sorry you were so sick. Glad you’re feeling better.

What I want to know? How on earth did you manage to post so many deals all week with feeling so terrible?

You’re superwoman!

Jerilyn March 20, 2010 at 3:38 pm

Glad you’re feeling better! I’m grateful my mom is close by too, unfortunately this winter was rough on my immune system, so she seemed to come over a lot!

I did my 1st cvs trip this week: I got 4 boxes of cereal for $2 (had a raincheck) and 6 deodorant for $1.60. I also got coupons to send away for a diaper deal on diapers.com (5 jumbo packs for $5-$10 after rebate!)

Dana March 20, 2010 at 3:44 pm

The Walmart brand of lemon-lime soda is $.78 for a 2-liter. I keep a few on hand for times when we can’t keep anything else down.

Hope you’re feeling better soon!

Blessings–
Dana

jan March 20, 2010 at 3:57 pm

hope you feel better!

Carol March 20, 2010 at 4:25 pm

sorry to hear you were so sick! glad you’re doing better and that you had help so you could get some rest. and about the sprite – well, i dunno, doesn’t sound the worst of vices to me!

Christal March 20, 2010 at 4:39 pm

CRYSTAL: WALMART HAS HOUSE BRAND SPRITE FOR 58 CENTS BY ME HERE IN CHICAGO. WOULD THAT WORK FOR YOU?
HOPE YOU ARE FEELING BETTER!

GOD BLESS THE GRANDPARENTS WHO HELP OUT WHEN WE NEED IT THE MOST!

Maria March 20, 2010 at 4:45 pm

I’m glad you’re feeling better!. Thank God for family. Since, I don’t have any family, I’ve learned to depend on God to give me supernatural strength when I get sick so I can care for my self and my family. Thank you heavely father that you exist and I’m your child!

Heather @ Check Out The Fabulous March 20, 2010 at 5:36 pm

The only way I can cut back on soda cravings, is using carbonated water and squeezing a little lime or lemon in it, gives a fun refreshing flavor! :D It might be just a tad cheaper, course you could always just use regular water and mix it with some juice!

Jennifer March 20, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Yikes! I hope you’re feeling much better now! :) I’m also glad that the grandparents were nearby and could come to the rescue with the littles.

jessica March 20, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Glad you feeling better!

Liz March 20, 2010 at 7:39 pm

I hate to say it…but I laughed out loud when I read your post. We’ve all been there. At least you have a good sense of humor about it. God Bless!

cait March 20, 2010 at 7:40 pm

Hope you feel better! Thanks so much for the savings link-up….love to see how others are getting creative with their budgets! :) Happy first day of spring!

brookeb March 20, 2010 at 10:17 pm

Thanks for putting a smile on my face, even under unfortunate circumstances! As I type I’m watching lame tv shows and trying to ignore the fact that I too have a flu that’s dominated by fever and aches that won’t let me go to sleep. And I’m sitting here with a glass of generic sprite from Kroger (.69/each!). I wholeheartedly agree, though, that when you’re sick you just get whatever you need to feel better.

The Frugal Family Manager March 20, 2010 at 11:02 pm

That sounds rough! So glad to hear you are feeling better.

Amy March 21, 2010 at 3:34 am

Wow! That sounds like quite a harsh flu bug. I’m so glad you’re on the mend and had some help to see you through. Happy Spring and thanks for all you do, it really has been helping me.

Jennifer Kaiser March 21, 2010 at 7:10 am

Hurray for Grandmas!! Glad you’re feeling better! I’ve always wondered what I’d do if I got super sick ( I have three under five). I do enjoy a Sprite now and then :-)

Nikole March 21, 2010 at 7:13 am

So sorry you had The Ravaging Fever Flu! Glad you are feeling better and hoping it doesn’t hit the rest of your family.

The way I have kicked the Sprite habit (it was my “drug” of choice, which is silly because it doesn’t even have caffeine in it) was to not to have it in the house AND give it up for Lent. The Big Guy is helping keep me in check!

Again glad you are feeling better!!!

Chantal Cooper March 21, 2010 at 7:19 am

It is soo sad to hear you have been sick. But great that you are feeling better. Get well soon!

Martha Artyomenko March 21, 2010 at 12:00 pm

i am sorry you were so sick! that sounds horrible!!! High fevers are so not fun!

Alicia March 21, 2010 at 1:34 pm

I can’t offer any advice on how to kick the Sprite habit, but I can tell you how to manage it cheaply! I don’t think you’re too far from here, and for the last 3 months they have been regularly putting .35/1 peelies directly on the Sprite. It’s been on sale almost weekly for 79¢. We’ve been stocking up, just in case we get sick.

Glad you’re feeling better!

Becky March 21, 2010 at 8:36 pm

Hope you are feeling better!

Lacey March 21, 2010 at 9:17 pm

Good for you taking it easy without guilt. :) I’m sure the Sprite comment was not to be taken too seriously, BUT I thought I’d take the opportunity to mention that water kefir is a delicious and nutritious fizzy drink that is a tummy soother with a mild, pleasant taste. Not that you’d want to get to work on brewing that in the throes of the flu, but if you ever did want to get a jar going you’d always have it when you or the kids have tummy troubles. :)

Zhan March 22, 2010 at 8:19 am

I just wanted to tell you to check on a product called Insure (proprietory blend of echinacea and goldenseal) by Dr. Janet Zand. You won’t know how you ever survived without it in the future. To always getting over your illnesses in 24 hours or less!
P.S. you will be tempted to not take the recommended 10 day dosage but trust me — you really should.
Thanks for all you do.

Buffie March 22, 2010 at 11:10 am

We had a day like that 2 weeks ago. Thank goodness for Grandma. And glad to hear you’re feeling better.

Rae March 22, 2010 at 12:03 pm

Glad you are feeling better. That sounds horrible

Paige March 22, 2010 at 12:24 pm

I hope you are feeling much better by now.
