While this is definitely not in the "simple" category, I think making homemade marshmallows would be such a fun and memorable thing to do at this time of year if you have some extra time. Make and Takes has an excellent tutorial over here which you'll not want to miss. I'm inspired to try this!

Thank you for sharing! These look so scrumptious!

These are fun to make. I’ve peppermint ones with melted candy canes in them. They are nice and pink – and delicious.

Heather December 17, 2009 at 3:19 pm

Thanks for sharing this! It looks like a great gift. I think I’ll be making these soon!

I’ve been meaning to try homemade marshmallows (w/ Alton’s recipe, even!). Thanks for the reminder!

Deborah December 17, 2009 at 3:41 pm

Thanks for passing this on…

This is especially great for those of us who are heading to countries where marchmallows don’t even exist! (Yep! It’s true!)

There is also a mix, I found it at Sir La Table, but I’m sure you can find it other places. It is Barefoot Contessa. You still have to mix it all, and let them set, just makes it a little simplier if you are in a hurry or have small kids, and they are great!

Hah! Funny that you posted this because I made these last weekend as part of a gift. Add a hot chocolate on a stick and you have a affordable, yet very chic looking gift!

Amanda December 17, 2009 at 4:40 pm

You should try it! :) I made 10 dozen marshmallows in an afternoon last week, and then I had fun with them: covering some in chocolate/chopped almonds, chocolate/crushed candy canes, and some on just melted chocolate with sprinkles! My husband loved them, and I took a bunch to various Christmas parties. They are pretty easy… just sticky!

These are also healthier than the store bought ones which, believe it or not, contain blue dye!

Melissa December 17, 2009 at 4:47 pm

Great idea! We made homemade peppermint marshmallows last week and I have a blog post scheduled for tomorrow!

Thanks for sharing, I might have to pull my moms mixer that she’s had for 10 years out of the box and makes these with my kids.

These are a BLAST to make, taste really yummy and make awesome gifts. I included them with X-mas gifts twice now and everyone has told me how yummy they are.

I’ve made these into egg shapes for Easter too. You just fill a 9×13 pan with flour, press an egg into the flour to make the shape, and then spoon the marshmellows into the molds. I imagine you could do other shapes too using blocks or whatever.

These are really not hard to make-Many of our family members are allergic to artificial colors and flavors so these are great for them.

My eldest would have a blast doing this. The youngest, well, she still will eat straight cake mix out of the bowl…

It sure does look like fun. Just may have to revise my shopping list for tomorrow to do this!

We made homemade marshmallows a few weeks ago. I saw the ones Giada did on the Foodnetwork where she made them orange. So we made ours PINK and flavored them with strawberry extract. Then we sprinkled pink colored sugar over the top. They were so pretty! Homemade marshmallows taste SO different than store bought. You will love them and so will your family!

I make homemade marshmallows every year for the holiday and they are a hit every time! I just posted my recipe on my blog this week! My readers had been asking for weeks for it lol.

I must be the only one who can’t do these. I tried it last year and it was a disaster. Just a pile of white, separated mush. Maybe the tutorial would help…

I adore homemade marshmallows! They taste so much better than their mass produced counterparts. I have been meaning to make homemade graham crackers to go along with them for some Smores! I just haven’t gotten around to it yet…

Have you seen how cute Martha Stewart presents her homemade marshmallows along with hot cocoa mix? She makes thinner marshmallows and uses a snowflake cookie cutter to cut them. The snowflakes float in the hot cocoa. How cute!

I’ll try this over the weekend (anticipated to be very snowy here in the mid-Atlantic!) with my daughter. I came home from work today and found that she had looked at one of my candy-making books and tried dipping store-bought marshmallows in melted dark chocolate and then rolled them in graham cracker crumbs. I don’t even like marshmallows that much and these were great! We’re taking them to my sister’s on Christmas.

Celia December 18, 2009 at 8:01 am

hey, I have made a fair few batches of home made marshmallows. I suggest you take a LARGE piece of plastic wrap and cover your whole mixer, leaving the bowl free. Then take another piece and put it over the wall behind you.

Trust me. Cleaning that stuff off everything sucks a lot of the fun out of it.

Robyn December 18, 2009 at 9:28 am

Just a note for those that haven’t made them before; make darn sure your mixer is pushed waaaaay back from the front of the counter, as marshmallows can tax a mixer motor and make it walk right off a counter, and onto your foot or a toddler’s head. Not good! Also, Martha Stewart has plenty of good marshmallow recipes, always very reliable. Nothing like store-bought; soft and awesome!

Robyn December 18, 2009 at 9:32 am

Also, I prefer her recipe to Alton’s (sorry, Alton; love ya!), as it contains egg whites, which makes for a softer, less rubbery texture. I’m a pastry chef by trade, and always use an egg-white recipe . My bakery sells a couple sheet-pans’ worth of these each day in the winter!

Also, do not, I repeat DO NOT use ground-up peppermints to dust with; they melt and will tun your marshmallows horrendously sticky and inedible. Have fun!

Homemade Marshmallows are really good!!!! I even made them with maple syrup so they would be healthier and they were good also!!

Brooke December 18, 2009 at 5:30 pm

Thank you for the recipe, I’ve been thinking about making these and did today, so much fun, definitely a tradition now.

Crystal December 18, 2009 at 8:12 pm

I recently made these with light corn syrup, no egg whites and they were great! Everyone loved them and could not believe I made them myself!! IT is great fun!

jessy December 19, 2009 at 7:49 am

lol. This is just too fun. I cant wait to try these with my kids. Thank you
