Super Savings Saturday: This week’s $13.56 shopping trip

by crystal on June 26, 2009

Okay, so I’m pretty sure that this week’s shopping trip would win the award for the most-percentage-of-processed-food-and-packaged-items-I’ve-ever-purchased-in-one-trip, but I’m going to post the picture anyway. I promise that we’re not eating a diet of Eggos and Pringles and Mac and Cheese this week. Really, I promise. :)

005

The truth is, that after scouring our pantry and freezer and refrigerator, we just really didn’t need to buy anything. So I decided to just hit some of the best deals and do a bigger stock-up trip next week.

Most of the items pictured were from my shopping trip on Friday to a local store which was having Double Dollar Coupon Days. I was actually planning to buy quite a few more items, but after scouting out the sales, piling my cart high with great deals, and getting ready to check out, I found out that they no longer accept internet coupons for the Double Dollar Days. Apparently, I missed that bright orange bold note at the top of the ad in my excitement of planning my shopping trip. Oh well!

On the bright side, I still came out spending $6.66 and saving $43!

And then my husband dropped by Target and picked up the Kashi GoLean Waffles (These were priced $2.50 at our Target so after the $1.50/1 coupon, they were $1/box) and 6 boxes of the Eggo BakeShop products ($0.50/box after coupons–see details here.). All totaled, he spent $6.90.

I’ll post our menu for this coming week on Monday to validate my statement above that we are eating something besides food straight from a box this week! :)

Wow, you spent so little for so much. That’s amazing! I’d love a review on the eggo muffins after you’ve had some.

Wow! Great job! That has got to be a record of lowest amount spent on a grocery stop!

Hey Crystal!

I’m really curious as to how you bought all that with so little! Can you tell us a little more about how you did it – what the sales were and what coupons you used?

How did you possibly buy $43 worth of items for under 7 bucks!?! I’d love to hear! I’m kind of new to all this, but I can’t seem to break 50%, and none of my stores around here double coupons.

Thanks,
Kristen

hey just want to clarify my doubt.

I went to walmart today to pick santa cruz organic lemonade but my store is not having it in the juice section.

Is there any place i should look?

btw my walmart is not a super walmart, any ideas?

I’ve run into a few places that give me a hard time about the internet coupons too.
Thanks for hosting!

That’s funny! We stocked up on cereal this week, and I promise we aren’t living on Lucky Charms !

10 Janet June 27, 2009 at 7:31 am

There’s nothing wrong with being helped out a bit with convenience foods. Great deals this week.

THanks for the information about the give away. I think it is great what Kraft is doing. My college son lives off Mac & Chs. Your girl looked like she was having so much fun!!

Now, if I had a total like yours I would have grabbed the nearest candy bar (even pay full price) to throw in just to change it! lol Can we say superstitious :)

I must admit I am always in awe reading your shopping trips! While I am getting close I am not nearly as good as you! Thank you for always openly sharing how you do it with the rest of us!
Blessings to you and yours!

Hi Crystal! Great stash!

I was wondering if you allow a certain percentage in your weekly budget for stocking up, or if you just go by the deals that week. For example, I aim for $50 a week for our food budget. However we’ve set aside $60 so I have that extra $10 to stock up on something if its a good deal. Sometimes I use it, sometimes not!

I donated a box a Kraft mac n cheese and spread the word to others! If I win I will use the winnings to give to others!

I have a question regarding the upcoming July Rite Aid rebates that I was hoping you could answer. In their July rebate booklet they state that if you buy $25 worth of participating products (they list a bunch) you get a $10 Rite Aid gift card. Scott Toilet paper is one of them. Now I have a rain check for 10 packages of this toilet paper at $6.99. I was wondering if I could purchase the toilet paper at the rain check price and still receive the gift card. Is this allowed? Thank you so much!

Traci: Unfortunately, I was under-impressed with the Eggo products. They were only $0.50/box, though, so it wasn’t too bad. I likely wouldn’t buy them again unless they were free.

Janaki: Does your Wal-Mart have a health food/natural foods section? If so, I’d recommend checking there.

Chelsea: Since I’m not a math nerd, I don’t set aside a certain percentage, but I would say that usually spend at least $5-$10 of our $40/week budget stocking up on good deals. However, this week’s shopping trip was almost entirely for our stockpile, so it really varies.

Like Kristin I am also curious what coupons you used. I see you have bought Pringles quite a few times so you must have a great coupon for that!

I just donated my box of Mac’n'cheese. Thank you so much for providing that link so that I could. I have a huge bag of my “goodies” that go to a shelter in a near-by community. Mac’n'cheese would be perfect to include. Thanks for all of your tips and help!

WOW! Money Saving Mom, you have a new fan:-) You’ve really got a handle on how the individual can save on daily errands, an easy but often overlooked aspect of financial smarts. My new favorite weapon to save money is BillShrink (http://www.billshrink.com/). It’s a free online tool that analyzed my cell phone, credit card and gas bills and then made personalized recommendations to save me $1000+. I’ll be sure to keep checking out your blog. Keep it up!
