Yesterday’s shopping trip: Aldi and Kroger (Dillons)

286

There weren't any screaming deals at Dillons (Kroger-affiliate) this
week, so I just stopped by to see if I could score any markdowns on
produce or milk. Sure enough, I was able get organic bananas marked down to $0.37/lb, Horizon Organic milk for $2 per half gallon, and bagged salads for $1.49 each. I also picked up some wheat germ and yogurt which I'll be using for our Baking Day today.

At Aldi, I purchased two cartons of strawberries, grapefruit, carrots, applesauce, raisins, and four things of frozen juice concentrate.

All in all, I spent $10.23 at Dillons and $14.20 at Aldi. That should last us through the end of this week, so I'm well under our $40 budget this week! Yay!

Stay tuned for more on our Baking Day today.

Around noon is a terrific time to go to stores, particularly Kroger. That is when they start marking stuff down. Also, for those that buy non-organic milk, Aldi’s milk right now is $2.49/gallon!

  • I love how healthy your “basket of goods” looks! So much produce and so colorful! Way to go!

  • I saw that you found some of the Fresh Express Salad Mixes on clearance! In our local Kroger AND Publix there are .75/1 blinkie machines located right next to the product. I grabbed a few (they are good through December I believe) that were sitting on top. Kroger usually has these salads marked down in three separate categories…first they will go to $1.99, then $1.49, then .99. The $1.49 ones still have a while to go before they spoil. The .99 ones usually don’t look to appetizing and I try to stay away from them unless I know I am going to eat salad that day! Ingles will usually mark these bags straight from regular price to .99. So with these blinkie coupons in hand, you could really score a great deal on salad mix! Be on the lookout in your store!

  • I just started following your blog, and I really enjoy reading! My wife and I love your frugal tips! I did want to mention, though, that Horizon Milk, though ostensibly organic, sources some of it’s cows and milk from conventional sources. That may not bother some, but if I’m paying extra for organic, it’d better be fully organic! Here’s a link to the study:

Once again, I marvel at the grocery deals available in other parts of the country. My local store doesn’t do stuff like this. Markdowns… they don’t happen here. $2.49 for a gallon of milk, our ‘special price’ is $3.69 and organic is much more. Love to read your blog, but know that $40 a week here would not get your the healthy variety you have.

Our Kroger has a special tonight from 4-midnight. I got hamburger/hotdog buns (8ct) for .50 bag. And Tombstone pizza for $1.99 each. And they had fritos (gonna make Petros) for $1.47 each. And then I had just gotten my mambo sprouts booklet and they had all kinds of cliff bar coupons. Mojo, and cliff kids, and Luna brand were on sale 10/$10 and they each had .50/1 coupons which doubled to make them free. Then I had .50 off 2 regular cliff bars and they were $1 each, too. So for $2 I got 10 bars! My kids are young, so sometimes they even split a bar (they are pretty high calorie), and they make a quick, not-so-messy snack. If I had been lucky enough to get there before a tornado of people, I would have gotten a bag of butterfinger snack size candybars for .47-but they were out . I plan to check back before my $1 off printable expires because I got a raincheck for the $1.47 price. This is another nice thing about Kroger is the rainchecks. Before I understood couponing I would have just said, “oh, well-they’re out of them…” And sometimes you have to do that at CVS and Wags, but not Kroger!

In the candy aisle at Kroger they had $1 off any starbucks chocolate. This might come in handy for Christmas!
