My grocery store has a huge health food store inside and they carry Quaker oats Steel Cut Oats. My doctor recommended it to my hubby and me since the steel cut oats are healthier. They cook like regular Quaker Oats Oatmeal

I have seen steel cut oats at Aldi in MI before. I did not buy any so I do not know the price, but I did note it because my mom is eating it to lower her cholesterol . (which has helped her!!) I hope they have some when I shop tomorrow because I want to try the crock pot oatmeal. My family loves the baked oatmeal that I make, but making oatmeal in the crock pot will let me sleep in longer. 🙂
Maggie says
I LOVE using steel cut oats. For the crockpot, I use one cup steel cut oats, three cups of 2% milk, brown sugar and two diced apples and a few slices of real butter. It turns out perfectly every time and our house smells delicious.

Thank you SO MUCH for posting the vegetarian lentil chili recipe!!! My husband just started the Daniel Fast on Monday and I have been looking for a hearty vegan-ish recipe for to use for him ever since! THANKS AGAIN!!!
Marie says
I’m dying to know your corn bread recipe!! I’ve been looking for a long time. How long will we have to wait for this recipe? Thanks for your site. I find it inspiring.
Crystal says
It’s slated for the third or fourth week in January. Sorry for the wait — maybe I just shouldn’t tell you what’s on the posting schedule. 🙂
Marie says
@Crystal, oh, that’s okay. I just really want a great recipe. Sounds like it’ll be posted about the time my daughter is due. I’ll have to watch for it. Thanks!!
Bethany says
@Marie, I don’t know what recipe Crystal is using, but you can try mine while you wait for hers. It’s made it onto allrecipe’s “top 20” list. 🙂

Marie says
@Bethany, Thanks!! While I’m waiting I’ll definitely try this. I love allrecipes.com too so it’s great to see the feedback. It was so kind of you to post.
Bethany says
@Marie, You’re welcome. A girl can only wait so long for a good cornbread recipe. 🙂
Michelle Kenworthy says
you can buy them at walmart….but they are way cheaper bought in bulk at the health food store. We jsut got them for $1 a pound at Sprouts
Stephanie @ Keeper of the Home says
I know that Bob’s Red Mill is on sale at Amazon this month, and they sell really nice steel cut oats. This would probably be one of the better prices for them, unless that Amish bulk store that you’ve shopped at before carries them, and then I bet you could get a 5 or 10 lb bag cheaper. You don’t have Azure Standard in your area yet, right? That’s where I get mine.
Amy f:) says
Wow! sounds good- we’re all comign over at meal time;)
Rachael says
It’s really helpful to see your meal plans in conjunction with the deals you found. It shows how you used your products, such as the egg roll wrappers.
Maegan says
What is the taste difference between steel cut and regular oats? Just wondering.
Maegan says
@Maegan, Sorry for the extra comment. My computer wasn’t downloading correctly.
Kris says
Aldi carries steel-cut oats as a special purchase about 3-4 times a year. I stock up then.
Maegan says
What is the difference between steel cut oats and regular oats. I have figured out from the comment that the steel cut are healthier but what is the taste difference? Thanks!
Gina says
I’ve gotten great deals on steel cut oats at Amazon as well. Use your Swagbucks!
Emily says
Absolutely loving the weekly menus! Thanks for focusing on them again. =)

How do you manage to eat out 2x a week for such little price.
I remember you had said a long time ago you budget $20 per week.
I’ve been thinking about taking food for my 3 year old because their meals at restaurants are way to expensive. Is this a good idea.? I try to order water every time I go out and eat. My husband is the one who can’t let go of that one habit. And since I’m so small, I often try to pick small meals. Recently we went out to Mimi’s cafe, and we had the biggest surprise. My husband ordered a Ceasar salad, and it was $12.99, and he left half of it on the plate. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, because eating out is the most we spend on.
Crystal says
I just realized that I had eight dinners on this menu and accidentally had Dinner Out twice on there — oops! It should have only been once, since we usually only have dinner out once a week.
Our favorite is the Jason’s Deli Kid’s Eat Free Nights (Tuesdays in our area). We can easily eat out for less than $20 on those nights — and even get drinks, too! However, if we don’t go to a place with Kid’s Eat Free, we sometimes spend more around $30 on eating out now that we have three children.
I’d suggest looking for Kid’s Eat Free nights in your area, as well as looking for restaurant Buy One Entree, Get One Free coupons — those are great ways to help stretch the budget.
flutemom says
@Crystal, do it now while your kids are little. trying to take 2 adults and 3-5 ‘kids’ who are too old for the kid specials makes for a very expensive night out….. our budget for eating out is $10/month (and that includes if we get pizza out) so you can see we don’t go out much at all!

I found Bob’s Red Mill steel cut oats for a good price at a local store. That particular item hasn’t been a good price on Amazon, but sometimes specific items are available at a store for really good prices (while other Bob’s Red Mill items from the same store will be at outrageous prices).
Susie Bakonis says
Oh, and I didn’t get a chance to read the other comments, but I’m guessing you may have already been referred to the http://www.weelicious.com website for the oatmeal in a crockpot recipe. Lots of wonderful baby/toddler recipes there.
Susie Bakonis says
I think Charlene from myfrugaladventures.com just put up a post about steel cut oatmeal being on sale on Amazon. I usually get mine from a natural foods store like Sprouts or Henry’s for about .99cents/lb.
Julie says
I buy steel cut oats on Amazon (case of 6 containers), b/c I can get the McCann’s 5 min. kind for a reasonable price compared to buying them in the grocery – same price, no tax, as we must pay on groc. in TN . I often watch for groc. sales on there. If you are doing them in a crock pot, you may not be concerned w/ the 5 min. kind. They are fabulous either way – taste same, same fiber content.
CH says
Glenn’s Bulk Foods has a very decent price on steel cut oats…yum!
Busy Mama says
Also available in bulk from Whole Foods
Lori F. says
Amazon is also running a great deal on McCann’s Steel Cut Oats through the month of January. It’s pricey, even on sale, but really good. I think the oat groats are toasted and they have more flavor. I use them half-and half with the organic steel cut oats I buy from a natural foods distributor in my area. I pay for them because they are good wholesome food and worth it for the great taste.
Jennifer says
Hi, did you ever post the Cinnamon Scones recipe because every time I saw the photo of them it made me want to run to the kitchen and bake some?! Thanks!
Kathy B says
@Jennifer, Me too. I was wondering the same thing. 🙂
Crystal says
It’s slated for Thursday of this week. 🙂
Dawn says
My MIL stocked up at Aldi’s on steel cut oats. We’re talking 30 containers! She keeps in the extra fridge they have in thier basement. Our nearest Aldi’s carries them sometimes, but its hit or miss (like my favorite roasted red pepper hummus they carry).
margaret says
I order mine from bulk food.com they have good deals and free shipping if your order is enough, I get 50 pounds at a time and split them with a friend. I also order dried fruit and spices from them always good…
Hannah says
Our Kroger (Fred Meyer) has them in bulk and they are actually bob’s red mill. Not sure the price. Costco also has a 4.5lb of the same thing for less than $5.
Sarah says
I get mine at WinCo in bulk for $.60/lb. They are Bob’s Red Mill steel cut oats. A VERY good price. I cant’ find them less than $4/lb anywhere else!
Erika says
You’ve gotten other things in the past from an Amish bulk food store–I would guess you could get steel cut oats there for next to nothing! My “local” bulk store sells steel-cut for .69/lb and rolled oats for .57/lb–and I find that steel-cut oats go about twice as far!!
Jeni says
Steel cut oats are also called oat groats and can be purchased at bulk foods stores.
Rita says
Try the bulk foods section. Steel Cut Oats can be expensive if you don’t watch the cost, I’ve seen them priced $3.50 or more per lb. If you’ve never tried them before just get a couple of cups full.
Now I love steel cuts oats and they are the healthiest oats you can eat as they are very low on the glycemic index. I put 1/2 c water and 1/2 cup oats in my vegetable steamer for 30 minutes and they are done. Don;t forget to add brown sugar, cinnamon and/or nutmeg.
And because I love them sooooo much and eat them regularly I purchased 50 lbs for $1/lb from Honeyvillegrain.com These oats, when properly stored will never go bad/stale.
Ash says
@Rita, I’ve found mine at my local Costco for $5 per 5lbs bag over the last few months.
But Rita is right. If you’re not sure they’re your thing, only grab a couple cups from the bulk bins at a local grocer.
Rita says
@Ash, I wish my Costco here in VA carried the steel cut oats but they don’t. It’s so interesting that many items at Costco are regional.
Jen says
Amazon has a great deal on some sc oats right now

The steel-cut oats should be right next to the regular ones. McCann’s Irish Oats in the metal can are quite good.
Mandy says
I’ve gotten my steel cut oats from Trader Joe’s, and also from Sprouts (the health food grocery store that’s out here). I’ll bet you can find them at Aldi (we don’t have one in Arizona, so I can’t be sure) or any other grocery store.
Allison says
If your cornbread recipe is from PW then it is absolutly the best! My son requests it for breakfast regularly.
Lacey says
Kroger stores carry steel-cut oats…they’re pretty much in every grocery store. You’ll start noticing now that you’re looking. 🙂
