A Day In My Life

We didn’t get home until later last night than I expected and I had some unexpected things I had to take care of when I got home, so I opted to choose sleep over getting this post up last night as I’d hoped to. 🙂

Here’s a play-by-play of how my day went yesterday:

6:30 a.m. My alarm went off. I had had a very full weekend and was tired, so it took me about 20 minutes to wake up enough to get out of bed. I don’t always have the luxury of being able to sleep in a little longer, but this morning I did, so I took advantage of it.

I headed downstairs to make coffee, light a candle, and read my Bible/go through the She Reads Truth Lent study for the day, and write in my Gratitude Journal.

I then started in on my morning computer and blogging work. Silas and Kathrynne woke up around 7:30 a.m. and I printed out their Daily Lists and got them started on those while I finished up my computer work.

Screen Shot 2015-03-03 at 9.15.45 AM

All on her own, Kathrynne has been working with Silas recently in an effort to help him improve on his reading skills, so she worked with him on reading and sight words. (See a video of a little part of their time together yesterday — so sweet!) While they were working on that, Kaitlynn woke up, too.

I was finished with my morning computer work so I worked with Silas on his Kindergarten lesson for the day while Kathrynne made oatmeal for breakfast for the kids, and then we all sat down and ate breakfast and had our Morning Time together.

Screen Shot 2015-03-03 at 9.15.57 AM

Once breakfast and Morning Time were finished, the kids got busy on Morning Chores and their Daily Lists while I worked on cleaning up the kitchen, getting the laundry started, and doing a thorough pick-up of the whole house — including closets and under beds. (Since we’ll have a film crew at our house for the next few days, I wanted to make sure things were pretty thoroughly cleaned.)

Kathrynne got finished with a lot of her school work and chores early, so she asked me if she could do some Paid Chores. I “hired” her to help with the laundry. 🙂

Once Silas was finished with his Daily List, he asked if he could be “hired” to work on the laundry, too. So while I was finishing up all the house-cleaning and pick-up, they folded and put away 4 loads of laundry!!

It was such a blessing to me as I had a lot going on yesterday and having them take care of the laundry for me was such a huge help. And it also reminded me that all those years of investing and teaching and training them when they were younger are truly starting to pay off in big ways.

Screen Shot 2015-03-03 at 9.16.33 AM

This girl. There are no words for her. She walked into the room all decked out like this for her outfit-of-the-day… I’m not quite sure what look she was going for, but it sure cracked us up! 🙂

Screen Shot 2015-03-03 at 9.16.45 AM

Our poor kids. They just have zero personality.

😉

Screen Shot 2015-03-03 at 9.16.51 AM

Once I was finished with getting the house all cleaned and the kids were done with the laundry, Jesse got home and he took over with the kids while I finally got in my run and shower.

Ashley (my assistant) showed up around then — she’d been working at the office space in the morning and then running some errands for me — to meet some people at our house to set some things up for the filming. I met with her to go over some details and projects for the rest of the day while Jesse got the kids ready to head out to Kathrynne’s swim team practice and Kaitlynn’s ice-skating practice.

Screen Shot 2015-03-03 at 9.21.19 AM

Multiple folks showed up at our house around then to prep our house for the filming/hang curtains, etc. Ashley stayed at the house to oversee things and finish a few projects and I left to go to the coffee shop for a few hours. I soaked up some quiet, reviewed the script for this week’s filming, finished up my afternoon blogging projects, and wrote notes to the kids and Jesse.

And then I met up with Jesse and the kids, we grabbed some Chick-fil-A for dinner, and then we all headed to our friend, Taylor’s, basketball game.

Screen Shot 2015-03-03 at 9.20.04 AM{photo from Tam — because I totally forgot to take any pictures!}

Taylor’s team pretty well whipped the other team, so that was fun. 🙂 And then we headed out to get frozen yogurt at Sweet Cece’s with Taylor’s family and our friends, Brent and Tam. These two families are some of our very dearest friends here and we feel so incredibly blessed that God connected us a few days after we moved here.

Like usual, we laughed until we cried tears — this week sharing all of our crazy airline and flying experiences. And we ended up closing down Sweet Cece’s. 🙂

It was a full day, but it was such a good day. We continue to be so grateful for our life here in TN. It’s much different than we would have ever imagined our life would be and I know that our lifestyle wouldn’t work for many families, but our family, our marriage, and our kids are thriving so much… and that’s such a gift!

A Day In My Life (it was a good day, but I am t-i-r-e-d!)

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 9.35.01 PM{I love his bed head look — and the fact that he came downstairs dressed in a button down shirt. He might not remember to comb his hair, but nine times out of ten, you’ll find him wearing a button down shirt it seems!}

It’s 9:26 p.m. and I am t-i-r-e-d! It was a good day, but a long day and I am ready for bed.

I went to bed early last night because I knew I needed to get up early this morning. Jesse woke me up right before 5:30 as he was getting up and around to leave for the gym.

It took me about 10 minutes to officially wake up and then I was ready to dive into my day! I went downstairs and made some coffee, prayed, and then decided to go ahead and get most of my blogging work done for the morning while it was quiet.

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 9.35.10 PM

While I was finishing up with blogging/emails/business work, Silas came downstairs ready to eat (he always wakes up so ready to eat!) and Jesse walked in the door right about that time so they made eggs and then I made some sausage and berries and sat down to eat with Silas while I read my Bible and wrote a note of encouragement to a friend.

The girls got up and joined us for breakfast and while they were finishing up, I worked on Math & Language Arts with Silas. And then we all gathered around for our Morning Time together.

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 9.35.46 PM

I then assigned them their projects/Daily Lists for the day and got started on cleaning up the kitchen.

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 9.36.01 PM

It wasn’t too bad — mostly breakfast dishes and a few dishes leftover from the night before when Jesse and I had made an Oreo Pie together to take to Dessert Night with friends tonight.

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 9.36.09 PM

I loaded the dishwasher, swept the floor, and wiped down the counter tops and table.

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 9.36.23 PM

Before I was finished in the kitchen, I chopped up some apples and peppers to take with me for afternoon snacks.

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 9.36.42 PM

I also packed some turkey and made some coffee to-go. And then cleaned that up and the kitchen looked as good as new… until the next meal. 😉

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 9.36.55 PM

Even if it never lasts long, I love a clean kitchen!

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 9.49.05 PM

I then headed out with my book to the treadmill in the garage to get in a brisk walk. I am still loving this book!

Afterwards, Jesse and I took some time to chat and catch up — talking about a few business and life things and he checking in and encouraging me (I’ve had a few pretty discouraging things happen in my life in the last few days and a few other things I’ve been feeling fairly overwhelmed by. Jesse is always so good to listen, pray for me, and just encourage me!)

And then I hopped in the shower, washed my hair, got ready to go and left to go meet my brand-new assistant at the shared office space. I spent the afternoon teaching her the ropes of some of her new responsibilities and getting in some blog work, too.

Before I knew it, it was almost 5 p.m. and time to run and errand and then head home. Jesse had a yummy soup waiting for dinner for us and we ate dinner and chatted about how our afternoons went. Then, we loaded up the kids to go over to to hang out with friends for a Dessert Night. It was so good to catch up and laugh until we cried.

8 p.m. came all too soon and we said our goodbyes, headed home, cleaned up, made a pot of tea, snuggled with the kids and said our goodnights and now I’m finishing up this post while Jesse finishes up a few projects. And it’s 10 p.m. and our bedtime. So I’m signing off for the night…

I hope you had a great day, too. I’d love to hear about it — tell us in the comments!

A Day in My Life: Daily Lists, Lord of the Rings, purse clean-out, and the allergy appointment that wasn’t!

Screen Shot 2015-02-09 at 4.41.03 PM

As a family, we’ve been collectively working on going to bed early and getting up early. When we follow our plan, it’s always amazing the difference it makes! Today was such a good Monday and I think a big part of that was because we went to bed early, got a great night’s sleep, and all got up early.

I think it’s also helping a LOT that I’ve been following through with my #Choose30 Challenge to get up and exercise, shower, get dressed, and read my Bible before doing anything else. No more wearing my PJ’s at 10 a.m. in the morning!

When I get dressed in something that makes me feel great, it always helps me have an extra spring in my step and more focus and productivity.

If you’ve been feeling like you don’t have any energy and are just spending your day running around in circles, I encourage you to try getting up a little earlier, exercising and getting dressed, and making a simple plan for your day. Sometimes, something as simple as a few tweaks like that can make a world of difference!

Screen Shot 2015-02-09 at 4.41.22 PM

Meet Lillian. Kaitlynn spent a lot of time with her today and made her a collar and leash. 🙂

This is totally my kind of pet — no messes to clean up and no allergies to worry about (Silas and I are both really allergic to just about every animal. As a result, much to my kids’ sadness, stuffed animals have to suffice for our family in the pet department!)

After getting up early, exercising, showering, getting dressed, and reading my Bible, I spent some knocking out some blog projects, answering emails and comments, and scheduling some blog posts and social media posts.

Screen Shot 2015-02-09 at 4.42.29 PM(Photo courtesy of Silas — he wanted me to show you all  his list so he took 20 pictures for me to post!)

Then I got the kids up to eat breakfast and work on their morning chores. We are still loving the Daily Lists idea… and now that they’ve gotten into more of the routine of doing these, the kids get so much done, the house is staying so much cleaner, and everyone is happier all around. I highly recommend this idea!

Screen Shot 2015-02-09 at 4.42.04 PM

Kathrynne started reading The Lord of the Rings a few days ago and she is lapping up the first book. I wasn’t sure if it would be above her reading level, but she keeps telling me how interesting, exciting, and engaging it is.

I’m finding her with her head stuck in the book almost every extra minute she has… and I couldn’t be happier to raising such a voracious reader!

Screen Shot 2015-02-09 at 4.42.38 PM

After morning chores and breakfast were done, we sat down for Morning Time. We’re loving The Cricket in Times Square so far. It’s a fun and light read, but I think we’re all going to want to visit NYC after reading it!

Screen Shot 2015-02-09 at 4.43.29 PM

Jesse got home near the end of Morning Time (he had been at the gym, running a few errands, and in a business meeting) and brought me a Starbucks coffee — Pike Place coffee with lots of cream, just as I like it! I love that man!

Screen Shot 2015-02-09 at 4.42.47 PM

Kaitlynn was afraid Lillian might run away, so she made sure she stayed put during Morning Time. 😉

After Morning Time, I gave instructions to the kids to start working on their independent work and I gathered up my bag, coffee, and made a sack lunch before heading out for another string of allergy tests at the allergist.

Right about then, Kathrynne came to me worried and reminded me that I’d taken my meds last night and wasn’t I supposed to be off of them for the week before I did the allergy patch testing?? I completely forgot that the doctor had told me at my appointment last week. Whoops! Thankfully my kids are more on-the-ball and paying better attention than me! 🙂

So I called the allergist and they were so gracious to let me reschedule. Oh well, I wasn’t really looking forward to wearing patches all over my back for the next two days anyway… especially since I wasn’t going to be able to shower until they took them off on Wednesday!

Screen Shot 2015-02-09 at 4.43.36 PM

So instead of heading out the door, I hung out with Jesse for about 20 minutes and we talked about life and did some business brainstorming. And then I took 15 minutes to clean out my purse.

Screen Shot 2015-02-09 at 4.43.42 PM

I was thrilled to realize that my purse wasn’t at all as bad as I thought it would be. I’ve been trying to make a habit of always thoroughly cleaning it out when I return from a trip and it seems this habit is helping quite a bit.

I dumped everything out of my purse and here’s what was in there. I happy that there was so little trash and very few things that weren’t supposed to be in my purse!

Screen Shot 2015-02-09 at 4.43.50 PM

I also cleaned out Purse Emergency Bag. This little bag is filled with everything that I often find myself needing or wanting — lip gloss, tissues, essential oils, tampons, breath mints, Advil, hand sanitizer, lotion, and so on.

I use something from it almost every single time I go somewhere and love that when someone says, “Does anyone happen to have ____?” I often do, thanks to my Emergency Bag.

After my purse was cleaned out, I left Jesse with some instructions for the kids, told everyone goodbye, and headed out to work at our shared office space for the afternoon. I spent this afternoon getting caught up on email, working on projects, scheduling social media posts, and writing some blog posts.

And now I’m headed home for dinner, to work with Kathrynne on getting caught up on the laundry (she’s been doing most of the laundry, but I help her out when it gets a little behind like it often does over the weekend), and to hopefully do some knitting while Jesse reads aloud to us (he’s recently started reading aloud to us in the evenings and we all love it and so does he!)

How was YOUR day? Did you get any cleaning done? Tell us about it in the comments!

A Day In My Life + my #Choose30 Challenge for February

Screen Shot 2015-02-02 at 10.00.57 PM

My good friend and neighbor, Tam, is running a #Choose30 Challenge on her site this month, encouraging people to choose one thing to do differently that will make an impact in their lives.

I wanted to join in, but I was a little scared to commit to what I really wanted to commit to. Because, well, it seemed a little dorky.

Also, I knew that if I “put it out there” it would mean that I’d have to, you know, follow through. And while I can be the Queen of Great Intentions, following through is not always my forte.

I’m working hard on that and have made some big strides, but I still fall off the bandwagon more often than I’d like to admit to.

But anyway, since I’m all about public accountability, I might as well tell you what my #Choose30 commitment is, however quirky it might seem to some of you.

Drumroll…

Here goes: I’m committing to get up and exercise, take a shower, get dressed in something that makes me feel great, and read my Bible first thing every single morning this month.

Before I hop onto the computer.

Before I get distracted with washing a sink full of dirty dishes that I should have done the night before. Ahem. (Yes, don’t ask me why I’d rather wash dishes than exercise and take a shower, but it’s true!)

Before distracting myself with the 432 other things I can come up with to do first before exercising and taking a shower.

I seem to find all sorts of “important” reasons to stall and wait until the last minute to get ready for the day… every.single.morning.

And some mornings, gulp, I realize that it’s not even morning and I’m still sporting my comfy pj pants and a t-shirt and bed hair. Because I’m classy like that.

I dislike this habit of mine a lot. I want to break it. I really do.

I’m more productive when I have exercised, showered, and dressed. I feel better about myself. And I don’t have to avoid answering the door or rush around like a mad woman trying to get myself looking presentable during the last 15 minutes before we need to be out the door.

Plus, my day just seems to go smoother and better when I start it out by getting ready for the day. Not to mention, I want to set a good example for my kids.

So that’s my commitment for February. That’s my #Choose30 Challenge. Here’s to hoping I can change this habit of mine for good!

{If you need some accountability to develop a new habit or jump out and be brave and try something different, head on over Tam’s blog to read all about the #Choose30 Challenge and to sign up to join the journey!}

Screen Shot 2015-02-02 at 10.01.09 PM

So after starting my day at 5 a.m. with exercise, showering, and Bible reading, I had my blogging time and then it was time to jump into my day.

I tried this new hot cereal for breakfast. It was so-so.

Screen Shot 2015-02-02 at 10.01.15 PM

During breakfast, I read from our current devotional: Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing. And then we all got busy on our morning chores.

I am trying out Sarah’s idea to use Daily Lists to help my kids stay on task. The kids were fairly resistant to the idea at first, but after a little convincing and encouragement, they seemed to have a complete change of heart. And then, they’ve ended up loving it and it really has seemed to help them stay motivated and focused!

As a bonus, they’ve needed a lot fewer reminders from me on what they are supposed to be doing or encouragement to steer them back on course. We’ll see how it plays out long-term, but I’m really loving the idea so far!

Screen Shot 2015-02-02 at 10.01.42 PM

While the kids were working on their morning chores, I cleaned up the kitchen, started the dishwasher, and cleaned out this cupboard that has been screaming for attention for quite some time.

I pulled most everything out of it, wiped it down, refilled the oats and flour canisters, and then re-organized everything.

Screen Shot 2015-02-02 at 10.01.57 PM

You can’t tell that big of a difference, but I can. And every time I open up this cupboard, I will be glad it’s now clean and organized again!

I also wiped out the cupboard underneath our kitchen island — where we keep our trash can and some other miscellaneous items.

And then while the kids finished up their chores and got started on their morning independent work, I ran upstairs to have a Google Hangout with Lisa-Jo, Joy, and the folks from Help One Now. We’re working on project for South Africa that we’re going to be encouraging you all to join in with us and we needed to discuss some details for that.

I usually don’t schedule any phone calls in the morning, but this was the only time we could find that would work for all of us before next week (when we’re launching this project — stay tuned!) so I just made an exception to that policy and went with it. Because the kids had their Daily Lists, they stayed very focused and on task while I was in the meeting — which was such a blessing!

When I got off the call, Jesse was just walking in the door so we sat and talked for a bit to catch up on his morning and I brought him up to speed on how the kids did while he was gone. We also chatted about a few decisions we needed to make. And then we all headed to the kitchen table while we did our Morning Time (this idea has been revolutionary for our homeschool and we are just LOVING it!!). While we read, sang, reviewed our memory verses, worked on handwriting, and read some more, Jesse made lunch for us.

We ate lunch and did our family devotions and then Jesse took over homeschooling and I headed up to my office upstairs to get in a few hours of work. This afternoon, I worked on scheduling some blog posts and social media, responded to comments and emails, scheduled a few things for the rest of the week, and then had a phone call.

We got the kids ready to go around 5 p.m. and headed to have dinner with a few families who live in our area. We love this small group of families — some of our dearest friends here — and always look forward to when we get to hang out!

We made it back home a little after 8 p.m. and Jesse read to the kids while I wrote this post and finished up a few projects that had looming deadlines. (I try to be completely offline after 6 p.m. every night, but we make the occasional exception when I have a deadline.) And now it’s off to bed for me…

How was YOUR day?

A Day In My Life: Early rising, computer crashes, Morning Time, cleaning out a closet, and a remarkably good Monday!

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 5.19.17 PM

So how did your Monday go? Mine went remarkably well — which was not what I was expecting after us all being sick and completely off any routine last week and few weeks of us being mostly off school.

I am trying to get back to really early, early rising again. To the tune of 3:30 a.m. Yes, I have up and lost my mind. 🙂

But this morning, I was so grateful that I got up early because I had a lot of computer work to catch up on and my laptop crashed yesterday, so I was working on my husband’s laptop… which was clearly invented in the time of the dinosaurs. Or at least that’s what it felt like when the thing was working at a snail’s pace. (Have I mentioned I don’t have a lot of patience when it comes to slow computers??)

Instead of being frustrated, though, I decided to focus on the positive: that I usually have a fast computer, that I an internet connection at all, that my computer is under warranty, and that I have a backup computer to work on.

After crawling through all my morning computer work, I finished up, spent some time reading my Bible and studying John 4. Then I exercised with Silas (who was the only up at the time) and then let him play an educational game on the computer while I took a shower.

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 5.19.33 PM

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 5.22.52 PM

When I was ready for the day, I got the girls up, we had breakfast (Purple Power smoothies — see the ingredients here), and read our devotional and some from Aesop’s Fables.

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 5.19.47 PM

While the kids were finishing up their breakfast, I wrote out chore lists for them (their chores change a little each day depending upon what needs to be done — I’m also divvying up the Confident Mom Planner chores between us all) and they go busy on their lists.

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 5.52.04 AM

I cleaned up the kitchen, started some laundry, cleaned up my room, made my bed, washed Kathrynne’s hair and fixed it, and helped Silas with his chores.

16179585365_fcbc069443_k

We then sat down for Morning Time. Oh how I think this idea is going to be such a gift to our homeschooling. It went SO well today and was so fun to have time set aside to do those things I always hope we would get to but always seem to be crowded out by math, grammar, and so on.

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 5.20.00 PM

After we were done with Morning Time, Jesse got home and made lunch for the kids, got them started on the core subjects for the day while I worked on cleaning out the bathroom closet.

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 5.20.17 PM

I pulled most of the items out, reorganized and consolidated, threw a few things out, and moved some of the extra bottles to the second bathroom where were have some empty storage shelves. And within around 25 minutes, the closet looked SO much better!

Believe it or not, by 12:30 p.m., I had finished my entire Morning List. I guess the getting up early thing really does work well. 🙂

I spent the afternoon working on blog projects, writing this post on my South Africa secret, and getting caught up on emails.

And then tonight we had our usual weekly Monday night gathering with friends. We all brought stuff for a Taco Bar and an Ice Cream Bar. It’s always an evening filled with a lot of laughing, ribbing, and just so much fun. We’re grateful for this group of friends that God has given us and how much they bless us each week.
