5 Things I'm Loving This Week

It’s been 70 and 80 degrees here this week in TN. Say what?!?

Nashville: It’s OCTOBER. The end of October, to be more specific.

Did you miss the weather memo that this is the time of year when we like to wear leggings and boots and scarves?? I think you may have.

I’ve tried to be a good sport and wear leggings. I really have. But I give up. Because as much as I love leggings and boots, I prefer not dripping in sweat more. #StillWaitingforFall

Here are 5 things I’m loving this week:

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

1) This Beautiful Gift From My Sister

This showed up in my mailbox last week. It was a belated birthday gift from my younger sister, Olivia. (Yes, she designed it and used a wood burner to create it!)

Not only is this one of my longtime favorite hymns, her gift came on the exact day that I so needed this reminder.

2) Getting to Spend Time With Michele

I may have only gotten to hug her neck and see her for 7 minutes in her hotel parking lot before we both had to head to our respective speaking events, but I GOT TO SEE MICHELE!!!! We’ve not seen each other since right after all her chemo and radiation earlier this year and it has been WAY too long!!

My week is now complete and I’m a happy, happy girl. Love you so much, friend!

3) A Sneak Peek at Some of Our Soon-to-Be-Released Products

I just got a sample of our a few of our new products that are coming soon — including this cute fridge magnet.

We created it with the hope that it would encourage women to remember: you matter. The world needs your gifts. The world needs your story. The world needs YOU!

4) Not Checking Email Until After 12:30 p.m.

I committed to this at the beginning of the week and it has been the best.thing.ever. Truly! And honestly not at all as hard as I thought it would be!

Read more about why I committed to this and the difference it has made here.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts

5) Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Once I’d had a bite or two of these roasted Brussels sprouts, I promptly reneged every last thing I’d said about how much I despised Brussels sprouts.

I was hooked. How come I had gone years of my life not knowing about this amazing-ness?? We tried a new recipe for them this week and I posted it here.

What about you? What are YOU loving this week? Tell us in the comments!

5 Things I’m Loving This Week: New colored pencils, leggings, & a girl’s night out!

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

I’m SO grateful that I was finally feeling better and able to resume my normal pace this week! It felt good to jump back into life after being down and out for so long!

While everyone did so well at keeping things running while I was recovering, I did discover a few things that proved I’m still needed around here. 🙂 For instance, I found this pan (see above picture) put away in our cupboard.

We may have a slight misunderstanding in our home as to what constitutes “clean dishes”. Just possibly. And now I’m wondering if there was a whole load of dirty dishes from the dishwasher that someone put away trying to be helpful. I do not want to dwell on that thought, though.

This dirty pan discovery wasn’t the worst discovery of that day, though. Nope. I had been smelling a nasty smell in my car and I decided I should investigate further… only to discover a half-eaten frappe in the back seat cup holder.

For the record, if you leave a half-eaten frappe in a hot car for half a week, it will turn green and smell like a mix between skunk and sour milk and throw up. It’s really lovely… especially in your car!!

{I am nice enough not to take a picture of said moldy, green frappe ruins. I decided that might be taking the over-sharing just a little bit too far!}

It was a full week and I had trouble narrowing down the list of things I am loving this week to just 5 things. But here’s what I finally decided upon:

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

#1: New Colored Pencils

You all were so very, very right! Cheap colored pencils just don’t hold a candle to the more expensive kind.

A reader named Jennifer sent these new coloring pencils to me last week and they are AMAZING. Seriously! Watch this video here to hear me swoon over them.

5 Things I'm Loving This Week
You can see the ones Jennifer sent me here. Here’s my first coloring project with them (see above). {You can print this free coloring page here.}

One reader suggested getting them at a craft store with a 40% off coupon. Or maybe, if you’re as obsessed with coloring as I am, you could even ask for them for Christmas??

Y’all, I’m not sure what we’ve come to when colored pencils make me so giddy that I almost want to squeal. 🙂

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

#2: Loom Bands

We spent this morning cheering on Silas’ baseball game and loom-banding it up.

Currently, my kids have traded in their hours spent creating with Legos for hours making loom band creations. While it means that I’m constantly finding stray loom bands in odd places around the house, I love to see them exercising their creativity, making gifts for others, and learning new patterns together.

(Thanks to YouTube for the endless supply of new loom band creation ideas!)

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

#3: Leggings!

I celebrated the first day of fall this week by pretending that it was crisp fall weather outside. Thus, the wearing of the leggings.

Never mind the fact that it was actually 81 degrees outside. Please let me just stay in my little fall fantasy world, okay? Because it was a l-o-n-g summer!

{Please note that I wore said leggings in compliance with The Jen Hatmaker Rules of Legging Wearing. And if you don’t know what I’m referring to, please stop what you’re doing and watch this video. You’re welcome.}

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

#4: Getting Lost in a Story

I finally had a quiet afternoon to really get into reading The Bronte Plot! And I truly enjoyed it.

While I didn’t feel like the plot and story engaged me quite like Dear Mr. Knightley did, it engaged me enough that I wanted to keep reading even though I’d planned to take a break and finish a few other projects. 🙂

The Bronte Plot is a story of redemption in spite of past mistakes and a story of becoming a victor instead of a victim of our circumstances. It’s a lighter read and I got through it in one afternoon.

{I also enjoyed Lizzy and Jane and adored Dear Mr. Knightley — both by this same author. If you read only one book by this author, definitely read Dear Mr. Knightley.}

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

#5: A Girl’s Day/Night Out

I may have been a wee bit excited to get to have a completely kid-free 24 hours with some of my favorite people. No, we didn’t move to another country or go on a 4-week trip… I just sometimes like to channel my inner Boy Scout (i.e. “Always Be Prepared”).

I brought a few different outfits and multiple pairs of shoes (for real!) because we were planning a fun night on the town and I couldn’t decide what I wanted to wear. Plus, I kept finding more things to throw in my bag “just in case”. That often happens to me when I’m really excited about something.

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

{Taylor Swift was in town that night. We didn’t go to her concert — we just pretended like we were 12 and asked someone to take our picture next to her trailer! :)}

The night was filled with laughter, tears, deep conversation, and a whole lot of us being our crazy selves, too. We also stayed up entirely too late. But we just couldn’t help it! 🙂

I love these four women something fierce. They are part of our weekly Monday Group and they are some of my dearest local friends. They are women who will speak truth when you need to hear it, be a safe place to honestly share about struggles and triumphs, drop everything and bring you coffee when you’re having a hard day, and make you laugh so hard that you cry off all of your mascara.

What are YOU loving this week? Tell us in the comments.

2 big to-do’s crossed off my list + more! {5 Things I’m Loving This Week}

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

1. Guilt-Free Friendships

I love this girl something fierce! She rearranged a lot of things in her schedule to make breakfast with me work while I was in Indy. And then she spent the whole time pouring and pouring and pouring into me.

She has so much going on in her life right now and she’s speaking at TWO conferences this weekend, but she made time to love and listen well. She is such a beautiful picture of what authentic relationships look like.

At one time during the conversation, I apologized for not being a better long-distance friend. She looked at me sincerely and said, “I believe in guilt-free friendships.” She doesn’t just say those words; she lives them out 100%. Love you, Lisa-Jo!

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

2. Makeup

So, since I’ve been sharing more videos recently, a bunch of you asked if I could please, please, PLEASE do a hair and makeup tutorial. I feel like the last person who should be giving tips on this, but because I’m all about helping a girl out, I stepped out of my comfort zone and shot a video on it.

It’s super real-life and will probably make you smile… or at least just feel less alone. You can watch it here.

I’ve been loving experimenting with different kinds and types of makeup looks thanks to YouTube tutorials and Amazon credit from Swagbucks.

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

3. Two Big To-Do’s Crossed Off My List!

This week, not only did I get a brand-new TN driver’s license, but I also finally applied for TSA Pre-Check.

Both items have been on my to-do list for way too long and I waited until kind of the last minute to get them done. My license is expiring really soon and we’ll be in South Africa when it expires so this week was one of the last chances I had to get it done — especially since I knew it would likely take half a day at the DMV to get it done (and yup, it was 5 hours total from the time I checked in online to the time I actually made it out the door with my new license!)

We applied for the TSA Pre-Check awhile back but then had to go have the sit-down meeting at the airport office during the window of time that our application was valid. We tried multiple times to make it to the airport with enough time before flights to actually go to the TSA office, too, and it just wasn’t working out every single time.

It feels so, so good to have gotten these things done — especially since the TSA Pre-Check will likely save me at least an hour or two (or more!) of waiting in airport lines every single month.

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

4. My Little Scrambled Egg Maker

“How many scrambled eggs would you like today?” he’s asked me multiple times the past few weeks. And then 20 minutes later, he delivers this to me in my office or at the kitchen table or wherever else I am (if I’m not in the kitchen with him overseeing, someone else is as he’s still too young to use the stove all by himself.)

This boy loves to serve his mama and it never ceases to melt my heart. (Also, moms of littles: let this picture encourage you. All those hard days and all that hard work is going to pay off!)

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

5. This Intensely Focused Child

See that intense look on her face? That’s how she approaches most of life.

I love her old soul and the fact that she constantly analyzes life and belief systems and philosophies and won’t take “just because” for an answer. Though there are days when, as her parent, it would certainly save me a whole lot of time if she just accepted things at face value instead of needing to dig deep and try to understand why!!

I love how she’s so perceptive and intuitive and can look past what some would consider “rough edges” and see so much value and worth in people.

She came with me to Indy this week and was not only such a great traveling companion, but also such a big help to me. She loved getting to meet some of you and told me that one of her favorite parts of the conference was, “getting to talk to all the adults!”

5 Things I’m Loving This Week

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

1. My Husband

I was reminded again how grateful I am for this man. He has loved and cared for me so much while I’ve been recovering from surgery this past week.

And then he spent part of his 35th birthday at the doctor’s office with me. {I had been experiencing a lot of pain so he said I had to call the doctor and they wanted me to come in. And then he worked his schedule so he could take me to the doctor.}

This is what love looks like after 12 1/2 years of marriage. He loves well, serves sacrificially, and gives generously. He completes me, challenges me, listens to me, inspires me, believes in me, and still makes me utterly twitterpated. I love you, Jesse, and would marry you all over again!!

{By the way, the pain was from a small infection that they are now treating. After one day of antibiotics and a LOT of sleep, I feel worlds better. But I’m going to take it really, really easy for the next few days so that I can give my body time to completely recover!}

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

2. Smoothies

I was nauseous for a few days because of the anesthesia and smoothies were one of the few things that tasted good to me. And I was so grateful for them!

Our friends, Stephanie and Ryan (who are currently in Nashville for two months with their kids), brought me a smoothie on two different days. Just because. They also brought our family dinner and took our kids to the skate park. And this week was one of the busiest weeks of the year for them since they are running the Ultimate Healthy Living Bundle.

This is just one example of the many, many friends who reached out, made big sacrifices, and poured into us this week. Local friends brought meals, friends from across the country paid to have dinner delivered, other friends sent flowers, other friends watched our kids, other friends sent cards, so many friends prayed, or sent texts, or listened to me vent when I was discouraged, or sent me texts to make me laugh, or offered to do anything we needed done…

It has been humbling, overwhelming, and deeply moving.

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

3. Sonlight Homeschool Curriculum

This is our first year to do Sonlight and we are just loving it so, so much! I am teaching Sonlight Core D to the kids in the morning and Jesse is teaching Math, Language Arts, and Science to the kids in the afternoon (we’re using Monarch from Alpha & Omega for those subjects).

Jesse and I spent a lot of time looking at curriculum this year and thinking through what would be a good fit for our kids and our teaching styles and what we landed on has just been such a great fit. I’m also grateful for Sarah Mackenzie’s book, Teaching From Rest, as it really infused new enthusiasm in me as I approached homeschooling this year.

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up

4. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up

So while I told you that I thought some of the parts of this book were weird, I was so inspired by so many of the other parts.

The first two sections of the book were especially good and thought-provoking. I’ve been looking at things around our house in a new light. Does this thing on my wall, this thing on my shelf, this thing in my pantry, this book, this shirt: does it spark joy?

Jesse asked me what “spark joy” meant to me and I told him it was something that uplifted me instead of bringing me down. Something that encouraged me, something that sparked creativity in me, something that made me feel happy and inspired.

I realized that one thing in my life that was not “sparking joy” at all was the big stack of books I have had next to my bed for months. This stack of books was making me feel defeated. Every time I looked at it, I would think about how I should be reading more, how I wished I had more time to read, and on how many books I want to read!

So what did I do this week when I discovered this? I got rid of the book pile! As in, I moved all of the books, save a few, back to the book shelf. It was such a simple thing, but it was so liberating for me! Now, when I see the little pile, it feels doable and realistic, and I find myself wanting to read more!

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

5. Opportunities to Give Myself Grace

As I mentioned earlier, it’s been a week of lots of resting and learning to give myself grace as I recover from surgery. I’ve discovered I’m not really good at this resting thing — especially when it’s taken me days longer to feel better than we had expected it would.

I’m impatient. I don’t like to be needy. I don’t like to take it easy.

But I’ve learned a lot through it. I’m developing new compassion for people who struggle with chronic fatigue or chronic illness. I’m learning to gratefully and willingly receive from others instead of saying, “I’m fine” or “I can do it myself.”

I’m learning that it’s hard to admit weakness but that doing so encourages others who are also struggling. And most of all, I’m realizing how much I have to be grateful for.

So even though part of me wishes that I had bounced right back from surgery and that anesthesia hadn’t done such a number on me, the other part of me is so grateful for the lessons I’ve learned while being “down and out.” I hope I don’t soon forget them.

Bonus: Periscope

So I know I’ve been mentioning this a lot, but I am just LOVING this new way of connecting with you all. I love that I get to interact with you live. I love that it’s raw and real and unedited. I love that it allows me to go deeper and foster much closer connection with you all. And it’s just fun!

Here’s a sample of one of my live shows from this past week (you can’t see the comments on this video so if I’m referring to something randomly, it’s a comment someone just left):

You can see replays of all of last week’s Morning Motivation Shows here.

And be sure to download the Periscope app and search for @MoneySavingMom or Crystal Paine and follow me so that you can be notified each morning when I go live (it’s usually around 7 to 7:15 a.m.-ish CT). You can also watch the replays from the app on your phone for 24 hours after the live broadcast.

5 Things I’m Loving This Week (+ a health update)

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve shared a 5 Things I’m Loving post and, because of that, I had a hard time picking just 5 things to share! But here’s what I finally narrowed the list down to:

1. My New Coloring Book

I finished my first page from my new grown-up coloring book (see above). I’m sort of embarrassed to be sharing it here because I graduated Kindergarten a long time ago… And it kind of feels like I’m displaying my elementary school art project or something. 🙂

But then I thought about it more and realized that maybe seeing me take time to invest in creative and relaxing pursuits like coloring will inspire you to consider doing the same.

I also realize that, the older I get, the less I care what other people think. If it makes me happy, I’m going to do it, even if it seems juvenile. Okay well, within reason and all. 🙂

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

2. For the Love by Jen Hatmaker

I’ve mentioned this book a few times this week on my live video scopes (Are you following me on Periscope?? It’s so much fun! Just download the app and search for MoneySavingMom to follow me!)

This book is laugh-out-loud funny, but packed with many, many thought-provoking nuggets. You probably won’t agree with everything in it (I didn’t either!), but I think it will really make you think and re-examine relationships. And I’m almost positive it will make you laugh!

Note: I enjoyed the first half of the book better than the second half. I’m not exactly sure that I can pin-point why, but just thought I should put it out there. Also, the book is a little all over the place and the chapters feel more like essays or blog posts on different topics, not a cohesive compilation that builds upon itself and needs each chapter to make the whole book what it is.

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

3. Laughter — Just When You Need It

So, to be perfectly honest, this was a really rough week. Not only was I facing my first-ever surgery and was kind of unsettled and nervous about that, but I ended up getting really sick — with a fever and nausea. I also had a lot of business projects going on and was feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.

In addition, since Jesse’s mom died of cervical cancer when he was 12 and the fact that his wife had a cervical cancer scare and had to have surgery to remove a mass on her cervix dredged up all sorts of emotions for Jesse. He was frustrated, stressed, upset, and grieving all at once — and this caught me way off guard.

I’m usually a strong, even keel, upbeat person, but this week, I felt tired, weak, and anxious. So I looked for things to laugh about — because I desperately needed to laugh.

This photo above made me laugh so hard one day. I shared it on my Instagram account and someone mentioned looking up the recipe for ice cubes on I cried tears I was laughing so hard reading some of the reviews on that recipe.

5 Things I'm Loving This Week
Almost ready to be wheeled into surgery… I’m so rocking the no make up, compression sock, hospital gown look. Or not. 😉

4. The Amazingly Loving, Caring, and Supportive People in My Life

Folks, it’s hard to describe in proper words the kind of support we had in our lives this week. It was humbling and so good for me to be on the receiving end — even though it is very hard for me to receive.

So many people offered to help and with each offer, I wanted to just say, “We’re fine!” But the truth was: we weren’t fine. We were struggling and feeling beat down and worn out.

The meals, the flowers, the prayers, the texts, the emails, the comments, the help with our kids, the many more additional offers to help… it was incredibly encouraging and made us feel so loved and surrounded with support.

And it inspired me to look for more ways to reach out and help others when they are going through hard times, too.

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

5. No Cancer Diagnosis

I saved this for last, because it was our biggest news of the week. On Friday, we got the all clear, NO CANCER verdict from the doctor.

After hearing the news and feeling the relief it brought, I realized that I had sort of been holding my breath to make it through the surgery and to find out the final results of the biopsy (the doctor had told us that they were pretty sure it wasn’t cancer, but we were waiting to have the test results back that up).

I celebrated with graham crackers and ginger ale at the hospital — because I’m all wild like that. 😉 And then slept for 11 hours straight that night.

We have learned so much during the last whirlwind two weeks. We’ve grown as a couple. We have new compassion for people who are waiting on test results, facing surgery, or in the middle of some very unexpected and hard-to-process news. And we feel so humbled by all of the love and support people have heaped upon us — which has inspired us to look for practical and specific ways to love others well.

Thank you, all of you, for how you’ve rallied around our family the past few weeks. We can’t begin to tell you what it’s meant to us! And I’m so excited to (hopefully!) be back to normal life next week!

What are YOU loving this week? Tell us in the comments!

5 Things I’m Loving This Week (+ my brand-new live show on Periscope!)

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

I had this post halfway written on Saturday night and then, when we came back to the hotel from my speaking engagement in San Diego, I was so plain tired that I went to bed before I got it finished and posted. 🙂

But here are 5 things I loved last week:

1. Socks for Just $0.33 at Dollar Tree

Dollar Tree had 3-packs of socks for just $1 per pack! All of my kids needed socks, so it was a sock deal SCORE! They weren’t the highest quality socks ever, but at $0.33 per pair, I can’t complain — especially since they usually mostly wear socks for play and sports anyway.

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

2. West Wing

I rarely watch TV (unless it’s politics or the Olympics or sports with my guys), but I do love me a good movie or show. So, my husband and I had been trying to find a show that we both could get into and enjoy… but that’s hard because we’re so picky.

We like depth and character development. We don’t like fluffy fluff. We’re not into cheesy drama stuff. And we’re super picky about what we watch.

So yeah, finding a good show is pretty near impossible. But Jesse suggested maybe we try West Wing since we’re both political junkies.

The first season was slow, but we loved the character development. We’re now in season two and loving it more and more all the time.

It’s a fun way for us to hang out together and have an at-home “Movie Date” after our kids go to bed.

5 Things I'm Loving This Week

3. Periscope

Okay, so the truth is that I poo-poo’d Periscope for a few months. It just seemed kind of pointless to me as all I saw were people posting videos of their backyard or “here’s a video of the rain outside” or “see this video of the beach at the resort I’m at”.

I just wasn’t seeing the value in this new social media platform and never thought I’d do anything with it.  However, I’ve been listening to Chalene Johnson’s podcasts recently and she kept recommending it over and over again.

She convinced me to give it another look, and I’m so glad that I did. I discovered some bloggers and business professionals who were sharing some pretty cool and inspiring scopes.

The wheels started turning in my head. I kept watching scopes, kept investigating what was working for people, and started to consider if I should jump into the fray.

It took me two weeks of research, watching many scopes, talking to numerous people, and brainstorming with my husband and team, but I jumped in with both feet this morning and recorded my first ever Periscope this morning… and people actually showed up and participated!! I am quickly falling in love with Periscope and am enjoying tuning into a few quick broadcasts each day, too.

Psst! My New Morning Motivation Periscope Show!

I’m planning to do a short Morning Motivation video every weekday morning around 6:30 to 7 a.m. CT. on Periscope. You can tune in live and ask questions/participate with other readers in the comments. Or, you can watch the replay any time over the next 24 hours.

{If you’re not on Periscope yet, you can search for the app, download it, and then search for me (@MoneySavingMom) and follow me. You can choose to be notified every time I go live so that you can jump on and join in.}

Also you don’t need to do anything on Periscope or keep up another social media network. Just tune in or watch the replays. That’s one reason I love Periscope — because it’s simple and straightforward for people and doesn’t require any participation, unless you choose to participate. Best of all, there’s almost nothing to learn in order to be able to tune in — unlike social media networks like Facebook or Twitter!

4. This Article on How to Help When Someone Is In Need

This was an amazing article. Such a great reminder!

LOVE DOES things. Love doesn’t just think about doing things. Love actually does things.

5. Aldi Flowers

I’m such a fan of Aldi flowers. When we needed to buy some flowers for the filming at our house last week, Jesse picked up four bouquets for just $4 each! So we got all of these flowers pictured for $16 total!

What are YOU loving right now?
