I think I may have set some sort of record in my grocery shopping today. I went to six stores–which is very out of character since I rarely go to more than three at a time! However, I only had a short to-do list today and I got it done right after lunch. So my husband sent me out to go shopping on my own and told me to just take my time and enjoy myself. So I did!
Each of the stores ended up being out of some of the things I was hoping to buy, but I was still able to get some great deals. Here are the groceries I ended up buying:
And here are the different store transaction details:
Health Food Store Shopping Trip:
5 cantaloupe marked down to $0.59 each (I gave one to a friend whom I ran into at Dillon’s, so there are only 4 pictured.)
Organic bananas marked down to $0.39 per pound (I’ll freeze these for smoothies.)
4 boxes of Rice Milk marked down to $0.99 each
1 box alphabet noodles (for alphabet mac & cheese that we’re making for a school project)
Total with tax: $11.71 (I can’t seem to find my receipt, but I’m pretty certain this is what the total was.)
Aldi Shopping Trip
Butter — $2.79 (ouch!)
Feta cheese — $1.99
2 packages of Multi-colored peppers — $3.18
Hebrew National Beef Franks — $2.49
Total with tax: $11.21
Walmart Shopping Trip
4 bottles of Spic & Span — $0.97 each, used 2 $1/2 Spic & Span coupons
Total with tax after coupons: $2.16
Dillon’s Shopping Trip
Mom’s Best Cereal — $1.50, used $0.55/1 coupon (“doubled” to $1 off), $0.50 after coupon
2 cartons of buttermilk marked down to $0.79 each (I stuck these in the freezer to use in pancakes.)
2 Luna bars — $1.09, used two $0.50/1 coupons (doubled to $1 off), $0.09 each after coupons
2 8-oz. packages of cheddar cheese — $1.88 each
Total with tax after coupons: $6.57
Target Shopping Trip
3 bottles of Simply Lemonade/Simply Orange — $1.27 each, used $1/1 coupons, $0.27 each after coupons
1 Rimmel Glam Eyes Eye Shadow — $2.49, used $2/1 Target coupon + $1/1 manufacturer’s coupon, free plus overage after coupons
Total with tax after coupons: $0.37
I stopped by Dollar Tree hoping to find some Nature’s Own bread. They were all out, but I picked up some fun activities for the children to do this week and for when we travel to Dallas later in the week.

hi all! im sharing my finds from target/jcpenny/macys.
Lynette Parker says
I was wondering when you purchase you paper products or all your household supplies? Does diapers and the household supplies go into your weekly grocery budget?
Becky says
I’d love to hear what you’re doing with all of those peppers, Crystal. I also bought that same package and find myself stumped for some reason as to how to use them. Thanks!
Crystal says
We use them on pizza (you can chop & freeze for later use if you have extras), in salads, and then we just slice and eat raw.
Robyn says
I am new to your site and I am just wondering do you take into account gas spending when you are driving to several stores? Thanks.
Crystal says
Yes, I definitely take that into account. All the stores I shopped at on Saturday are within a few minutes of our home. I have a little circuit I drive when I got shopping and pass by all these stores (except Target) when driving it. So it’s no extra gas to go to any of them, except Target–which is just a few more minutes in a different direction. If I were to live far away from all these stores or they were spread out in all different directions, I’d take a much different approach to shopping.
Welcome, by the way!

$2.79 for butter is an awesome price here (Atlanta). I have been paying $3 per pound on sale for months now. It is funny how one person’s “ouch” is another person’s “yippee”! 🙂
Sarah says
I agree! I just had to fork over $3.74 per pound for store brand butter on “sale” with a coupon. Nice brands of butter are $6.99 regular price. That’s So Cal for you!
Ashley says
I would love to join you too when you come to the Big D!
Crystal says
We don’t have a reader meet-up planned, because there were over 150 people who wanted to come–and I couldn’t figure out the logistics of pulling it off, unfortunately. 🙁
Susan says
I was thinking it would be fun too. Too bad it won’t work out. Have fun while you are here!
natalie says
I’d love to get together in Dallas, too, depending on the day! Have fun while you’re in town!

Hi,
If you are meeting your readers in Dallas I’d love to join too.

Would love to know where you found the .55/1 Mom’s cereal q? I could only find .55/2. My Kroger doubles up to .60, so that would be an awesome price for me!
Crystal says
Here you are: http://momsbestnaturals.com/special-offers/
Crystal says
Forget that, I just saw that it’s now changed to $0.55/2. 🙁
Debbie says
The Simply Lemonade/Orange are $1 at Walmart…I was able to get 2 free lemonades & 2 oranges.
Crystal says
Crystal, where did you find the $.55 off one mom’s best coupon? The only thing I found for this was a $.55 off 2, which still made them only a dollar so I used them anyway, but just curious! If I can find the $.55 off one coupon, I might make an extra trip this week! 🙂
Crystal says
It should be here: http://momsbestnaturals.com/special-offers/
Crystal says
Nevermind, I just saw that they changed it to $0.55/2. 🙁
MomofTwoPreciousGirls says
Crystal,
I notice you often buy Rice milk. Is this a choice for your family or allergy issue? WOW 99 cents! I really wish I had a health food store nearby! I generally spend 3.99 a carton. I have not been all that enthused with getting my oldest Rice milk, bc it has nowhere near the nutritional value of Soy or even whole milk…but she still likes to have “milk”.
Crystal says
I have two children that have milk issues, so I mostly keep them off milk–which is why I often buy Rice Milk and Almond Milk when I can get them on a great price.
Michelle K says
Crystal, If you are interested in stretching that buttermilk, over at Raising Olives under her post on making yogurt she also tells how to make buttermilk with store bought buttermilk. I haven’t tried it but I would like to. I make her yogurt (slightly tweeked) and love it!!! It is super easy, the buttermilk is easy too.
Crystal says
Thanks so much!
Julie in IN says
Crystal, Are you able to get milk for $2.50 a gallon at Aldi? I’m trying to understand your reasoning for paying $3-$4 for almond milk and buttermilk if it costs more than regular milk. Have you made buttermilk from cow’s milk with lemon juice? Cheap and easy…..
Jenni says
You can also make real buttermilk from cow’s milk by mixing in a few tablespoons of buttermilk with cow’s milk and letting it sit overnight – there are temperatures to heat up and cool down to, kind of like yogurt, but I’ve tried it with success.
Jennifer says
So, do you drive around town with a cooler in the back of your car? When you post these round-ups, could you also include a report on your time? I love the idea of doing this, I just need some more details. 🙂 Thanks
Crystal says
I think this took me around 2.5 hours to pull off from start to finish. But I was also taking my leisurely time. 🙂
Bobbi Simmons says
This weekend I went to JCPs and got end of the season summer clothes. $1, $2 and $3..plus a store coupon. Went to Walmart and they had their summer clearance and got 8 outfits and three shirts for $18. My girls are all set for next summer!
Kim@Going Thrifty says
$4.59. THAT is how much a pound of butter is down here in S. Florida. Sometimes a bit cheaper at WalMart but not much. I saw your butter price and was jealous! But citrus, pineapples, avacodos, etc…we have them coming out of our ears.
Kristen @ Joyfullythriving says
Wow! Way to hit a lot of stores and find so many good deals! I was just thinking that I needed to use my Luna coupon next time I was at Kroger.
Billene says
Crystal, the Hebrew National Franks you found at Aldi, were they one of the stores special buys.I did not see them in the ad. I usually find them at Walmart or Kroger, if they carry them all the time at Aldi would be great. One less stop while shopping.:)
Crystal says
I think they were a special buy. I’ve never seen them there before.
Billene says
Thanks Crystal, hopefully Aldi will have them again at sometime 🙂
Jessica says
Links 60, 61, 62, 63, 64 and 65 are all affiliate links by that same “couponsandfreebiesmom” who posts affiliate links every week 🙁
Megan C. says
CVS had Huggies Shea Butter/Soft Skin wipes on clearance (not marked at my store, but when I price checked at the magic coupon machine it showed up!!!) for $0.87! They had three left, so I grabbed all three and used a $1 off two tubs coupons. Total after tax was $1.16 for three tubs! 🙂
Liz says
I’m sure you know already, but Walmart will price match … that way you only have to go to one store. And you shouldn’t need to bring the ad’s!
Crystal says
Unfortunately, Walmart doesn’t double coupons or price-match regular prices, which is why I went to multiple stores.
Michelle H. says
Welcome to Dallas! You’ve picked a good time to visit – temperatures are finally dropping to less than a 100 this week. Which is practically a cold front around here.
sheeba mathew says
Hmm…the butter was definitely an ouch price…we can get at Indian stores for $1.29/lb and your spic and span and cheddar cheese reminded me I need to stock-up on some…
Diane says
Sounds like fun shopping without all the seat belt buckling and un-buckling for the kids 🙂
I bought
4 green bell peppers for .39 each
6 # butter 1.99 each lb
4 Multigrain cheerios for .75 box
California red seedless grapes for .99 lb
Pretzels for 1.19 1# bag.
Greek yogurt free after free coupon in paper x 10
Kristine says
Wow, I’m exhausted just thinking about going to six stores in one day! I really hate shopping; it wears me out, even without my kids. I can’t handle more than two stores in one day.
Brandi @ Savvy Student Shopper says
Thanks for the link up!
I love seeing other’s deals 🙂
Kristen says
Are you getting together with your readers in Dallas? I had seen a post a long time ago, wondering if anyone wanted to get together, but I haven’t seen anything since. If you are, I would love to join in.
Crystal says
Unfortunately, over 150 wanted to come and I was having a really hard time figuring out how to pull that off logistically, so I finally just decided it wasn’t going to work out this time. 🙁
Regina @ The Tampa Bay Saver says
Wow! I wish we lived in the land of doubles for almost free Luna Bars! I had a pretty good week at Publix, but would have been better if Florida wasn’t anti-doubling!
Regina @ The Tampa Bay Saver says
Oh and sorry I posted my deal twice, it’s my first share and did the title wrong. Please delete! I’m not trying to spam. 🙂
Jen @ Master the Art of Saving says
I can’t wait to go get my Simply Orange. I love that stuff but only buy it when I have a coupon.
maggie says
You’re going to be in Dallas?? That’s awesome. Welcome! The weather is getting cooler.
Tiffany says
Yes, cooler here means it’s only going to be 90 degrees!
beingjennifer says
I love hearing about your shopping deals. It inspires me to keep at it even when it’s exhausting!!
I had hubby help for 7 stores in 3 hours on Wednesday. Whew! We spent $46 for $80 worth of stuff and then today we got four Simply Orange juices and 2 vanilla carmels (to use the coupons) at Walgreens for $.74 for $8 worth. All in all a good week!
Brandy says
Went to Dollar General and got six bottles of 32 load Wisk detergent for $8.27 (ish) including tax!
Total was $25 (ish)
Used $5 off $20 store coupon
Used 6 $2 off Wisk coupons!!
Sara@Save Money, Live Joyfully says
I didn’t have any great shopping triumphs this week, aside from staying under my $65 grocery budget for the week. I picked up a few clearanced school supplies from Target for our homeschooling classroom, but nothing super exciting.
I did, however, make it to Costco to finish up the newest Costco vs Grocery Store Price Comparison, which was Coffee, Tea, and Soda. That was interesting, and will save me money in the future 🙂 http://www.savemoneylivejoyfully.com/2011/09/costco-price-comparisoncoffee-tea-and.html
You definitely got a lot done today, Crystal, I’m impressed! You must be exhausted from all the running around, so I pray you have a relaxing night, and a blessed Sunday with your family!
shenan thorn says
On the Luna bars, if they were $1.09 and you had a .50/1 coupon, that would make them .59. I’m sure you know this, just wanted to point it out. 🙂
Crystal says
Our store doubles $0.50/1 coupons. 🙂

Shopping without the kids is great! You got some really good deals especially the overage on the eye shadow.
