Here were my purchases for this week:
Target Trip: Spent $11.26 — Read the full details on this trip here.
Walmart Trip: Spent $4.14 — Read the full details on this trip here.

My husband also picked up a gallon of milk earlier in the week, as well.
We’ve been eating mostly from the pantry and freezer the past few weeks in an effort to use up all of our perishables before our move. But we’ve pretty much eaten almost every last bit of them, so I’m not sure what we’re going to be eating in the coming two weeks while we’re in the midst of packing and moving to our new house.
I’m thinking we’ll subsist on cereal, fruit/veggies, burritos, sandwiches and probably a little fast food, too. And I’m not going to feel guilty if we spend a little more on groceries and food than usual over the next few weeks. In my view, there are seasons when it’s totally okay to loosen the reins a little bit when it comes the budget and just do what you have to do to get through a busy time.

When we moved into our house, we packed our remaining frozen food in a cooler at the last minute, and the same with our perishable refrigerated food. We moved our fridge with us, so it was the last thing out and the first thing back in. It was still cool, even! We unpacked the kitchen essentials first thing the next morning. We ate out a couple times, but then we were able to eat normally.
If you’re buying a new fridge, make sure it’s delivered a day before you move in to give it time to cool down.

You’re so sensible. Not only is it difficult to cook when you’re moving, but you have all the cleanup involved as well as handling leftovers when you’re trying to empty out the fridge, not fill it up. And when you’re packing everything up (and cleaning the old place) and cleaning the new place and unpacking, you just have to focus your energy elsewhere. I hope it’s a great transition for you–you’ve worked so hard to get there! Congratulations!

Since you live close to family I am sure they will invite you over for dinner a couple times during this hectic time.
In some parts of Alabama there is a tradition of pounding a family when they are new or just moved.Everyone brings a pound of food to the family that corresponds with the first letter of their last name.
C for us is cereal.I guess you would bring pears, peaches, plums, potatoes.
Maybe somebody will do this for you to help replenish your food.

Eating out is expensive but, get the Entertainment book and you can get a lot of B1G1 at many restaurants and fast food. PLUS they are running a deal right now- get 2010 book free if you order their 2011 book.

I was so glad to see you mention having some fiscal leniancy during a move. We recently moved nineteen hours away from our previous home. While our home was on the market, our agent strongly advised any major food smells so it was kind of hard to cook much because we had showings all the time. After we moved, we didn’t have a refrigerator (or washer/dryer for that matter – ugh) for the first week so I really couldn’t cook. Anyway, I beat myself up a lot for the money we spent on eating out but I look back and think, yeesh, have a little grace with yourself! It’s such a short period of time in the overall scheme of things and frankly makes the whole transition a little easier on everyone involved.
Best wishes with your move – can’t wait to hear more about it!

No need to feel guilty spending a bit more while moving. you do a great job at saving money and helping us do so also. i hope someone will bless you with a stash of food from their stockpile when you arrive at your new home!

Great trips this week. Thanks for the inspiration and good luck with your move!

When we moved, we didn’t want all of our frozen food to go to waste so we packed it in coolers with ice. Plus it was wintertime so that helped too, but I couldn’t bear to part with it!

Love this! Thanks.

We ate alot of fast food during our last move and the following week of unpacking. It gets old real fast so you will be plenty motivated to get your kitchen unpacked and bonus, that Big Mac isn’t going to have the appeal it did before 🙂 Good luck with your move!

One trend I am noticing is many of the stores are having issues with coupons. Target seems to be ready and willing to accept all coupons and accept all us couponers. So If the other stores are not intersted in moving inventory as much then i feel certain Target will contiue to welcome all of us with open arms.

I remember when my husband and I were younger one of our neighbors in our apartment building was moving and he gave us all of his frozen food. I thought that was such a nice thing to do because most people would have just thrown it away plus we were on a tight budget so every little bit counted!
Heather says
I’m so glad you mentioned food during a move. We just moved across the country at the beginning of this month and I was devastated that I lost a lot of my food supply in the process plus I wasn’t able to keep up my stock during the moving and unpacking. It was so tempting just to go buy everything at the store at full price just to have food, but we just upped the food budget a little, got creative, and had fast food a couple of the tired nights. Now my stock is slowly regrowing and we haven’t gone hungry – or broke! – yet! 🙂

I’m feeling at a bit of a loss these days…so perhaps you could address this topic in a future post! 🙂 What do you do when your local newspapers have squat for coupons (and I seriously mean one or two coupons and that’s IT) and you either don’t have a printer or your printer is broken (as mine has been for two months now)? I’m not looking for a lot of coupons as we’re buying South Beach Diet friendly, but there are some coupons that could really help the budget. Any thoughts, advice, or suggestions?? Thanks!
Crystal says
Well, I’d suggest fixing your printer. 🙂 But if that’s not an option, I’d see if you can print coupons at a friend or relative’s house or the library. In addition, check into nearby larger cities to see if you can get a newspaper subscription. Larger cities routinely have better coupons. Also, read this article: https://moneysavingmom.com/2010/04/31-days-to-a-better-grocery-budget-10-ways-to-get-coupons-for-free.html
Jen T says
@Carrie, Have you tried to look for a perfectly good printer for cheap or free on Craigslist?? Some people just upgrade theirs and want to give away the old one, ink included. You could get lucky, or have people giving away really old printers where the ink is expensive! Lol… It might be worth a look though.
Michelle M says
@Carrie,
Have you checked out what a new printer costs? I was at Walmart today and they have $25 printers. They aren’t anything fancy but they do the job. The one I saw was an HP one. The ink is a little more pricey if you buy new but if you refill the cartridges it isn’t all that pricey.
Are you in a small town? Our local paper, small town, is a complete coupon vacuum so I get the paper from the closest larger town (just started to be able to get it delivered) which has better coupons in it. Most gas stations have several different papers available. I know ours has the paper from the big town 100 miles away, the bigger town 3hrs away and the really big town 5hrs away. Not so interested in their local news but the coupons are worth the price of the paper alone, and our sunday edition papers aren’t cheap here

Thanks to you, I also got free wipes at Walmart!

When I budget a move, I include extra eating-out money as well. Too darn hard to eat normally under those circumstances.

You got a great deal at Target this week! Plus you can’t beat free wipes at Wal mart!
