Ugh. I hate it when stores open for Black Friday on Thanksgiving! (And I refuse to shop Black Friday sales at stores that will do that.) It’s consumerism just gone totally out of control.

Hi, Leah! I totally understand what you are saying. Even before stores began opening Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday had no appeal to me. Have you considered supporting small businesses instead? 🙂

I’m going to play devil’s advocate here, by saying both my husband and I don’t necessarily hate that the store he works at (Kohl’s) is open on Thanksgiving Day. Granted, it was nicer when it opened at 10pm or 11pm, instead of the 6pm opening this year, or even the talked-about 5pm, which is a bit ridiculous. However, since we eat Thanksgiving dinner early anyway, around 1pm, he’s more than willing to start his shift earlier in the day so that he’s able to be out of the store at a more reasonable time. Its much harder for him to take a short rest and wake up to be there at 3am. His store also has a sign-up sheet for people who would prefer to work earlier, rather than the overnight shift, and usually the management is more than accomodating. Take into consideration, also, that while I know that Thanksgiving is more about family than business, its sadly the one aspect we NEED also: the holiday pay rates are higher for working the holiday, making it a little easier to afford Christmas for our 2 young children. Lastly, once he’s done with his Thanksgiving/Black Friday shift, he’s off for the rest of the weekend, so we can spend as much time together as we want, and can even take advantage of the sales and go shopping by ourselves.
Its not always bad for the employees. There are still quite a few more than happy to work the holiday.

I’m glad that it works out well for you and your husband, Kim, :), but honestly for me, it’s not just that employees are being taken away from their families and Thanksgiving Dinners (although I do feel for those who don’t want to be and have to work anyway). It’s about the fact that we as a society can’t even take one single, solitary day to give thanks for what we have and spend time with our families and communities instead of madly rushing to shop some more. I think it is pathetic that we (as a society) can’t even manage to refrain from adding to our ‘stuff’ for 24 whole hours. Thanksgiving is a holiday, not just a meal.

(I’m not criticizing you personally; just explaining why I hate it! 🙂 )
