Welcome to my weekly Sunday post where we take a break from money-related posts and I share about what I’m loving right now and give you a little peek into our life from the past week.
I told you last week that I had BIG plans for this week — to not only commit to getting up at 4:30 a.m. every morning, but also to bring back my much-requested morning Periscope show.
I’m so thrilled because not only did I get up around 4:30 to 4:45 a.m. every day this past week, I stuck with my commitment to be on Periscope every morning, too.
AND, best of all, I got so much done this week and had a lot of breathing room in my life for the most important things — like relationships!
It was so successful, that I’ve decided to continue it for at least this next week, as well. No promises after that… I’m just taking this one week at a time! 🙂
This week, I’m also going to work on doing a better job of actually getting in bed before 9 p.m. — something that I struggled with this past week, mostly just because that’s at least an hour earlier than I usually get to bed! I know it’s very doable with our current season of life… I just have to, you know, DO IT. 😉
What I’m Reading
I haven’t been doing as much reading recently, but this week, I did a better job of at least getting in a little reading time every day. Hopefully next week, I’ll be able to report that I actually finished some books.
Right now, I’m reading: Thou Givest, They Gather (an old Christian reprint), A Gospel Primer (a spiritually encouraging book), 10% Happier (a story-driven book), and The Big Leap (a book on life improvement).
{See my Reading Goals for 2017. Also, see the 36 books I’ve read so far in 2017 here.}
{Psst! In case you noticed that my rug is off-centered in this photo, read this.}
What I’m Watching
We’re continuing to really enjoy Designated Survivor and are also watching the latest season of Amazing Race together as a family.
What I’m Listening To
This week, I listened to episodes of podcasts from Sorta Awesome and Cultivating the Lovely. I also watched/listened to the entire What’s 4 Dinner Challenge that is going to be part of the upcoming Homemaking Bundle (more details on the bundle later this week).
What I’m Loving
I’m absolutely loving the new raglan shirts we launched with Cents of Style this week. And if you saw me this week, you probably saw me wearing one! 🙂
One Thing I Accomplished This Week
I’m a Marie Kondo failure when it comes to the whole folding clothes thing. I read the book, I looked at blog posts on it, I watched the videos… and I really did try. But my drawers were just in constant disarray.
I got tired of digging through clothes, having to spend extra time looking for what I needed, and feeling discouraged every time I opened up my drawers.
So I decided it was high time I try something different… because clearly my current non-system wasn’t cutting it.
I pulled everything out of my dresser, hung up almost everything (including nicer tees and jeans), and bought organizers for the remaining items in my drawers (workout clothes, leggings, pjs, socks, etc.).
It makes me SO happy to open up each of my dresser drawers and see a neat and tidy system and space in each drawer!
I kind of just want to keep opening each drawer up to look at it and admire it! (Okay, I might be weird! ;))
I didn’t stress over getting them folded all perfectly since I’m just going to be pulling it out and wearing it, and it’s not Marie Kondo approved, but it works for me!!
What I’m Celebrating
Moms, it’s sometimes easy to forget what our kids are capable of. I’ve been working on trying to divvy up the household responsibilities even more instead of just doing things myself because it’s “quicker and easier.”
It may be quicker and easier in the short-term, but in the long run, it means that we are missing opportunities to let our kids learn new things, take more ownership, find the fulfillment that comes from accomplishing a task successfully… and it means we end up doing a lot more work than we need to be doing!
Case in point: I was getting ready to make some bread for dinner a few days ago when I realized that Kaitlynn could probably learn how to make bread and I had time to teach her.
She was so excited about making it, but then surprised me by asking if she could use a recipe she had found in her homemade gifts book.
It was her first time to make bread and she made the entire recipe herself with almost zero help from me. The end result was this amazing sourdough-like bread that wowed us all at dinner!! And the loaf lasted all of about 15 minutes!
She made it again the next day, too. I think I could get used to this. 😉
A Word of Encouragement for Moms, Especially
“I’m trying to get up by 7:30 am and had been feeling good about that. I just read your post about getting up at 4:30 am and now I feel pathetic!”
Someone left the above comment on one of my posts about getting up early and I wanted to reach through the screen and hug that woman and celebrate the fact that she’s getting up at 7:30 am.
You guys. Please remember that my kids are 12, 9, and 7. They are sleeping through the night. They can bathe and dress themselves. They can get their own breakfasts. They can even buckle themselves in the car! (Oh how I remember the days of 3 kids in car seats who all needed my help getting in and out of the car!!)
Also, please remember that my husband gets up early and has a very flexible schedule, so this works for his schedule, too.
Please remember that I’m a morning person.
Please remember that this 4:30 am thing is an experiment.
Please remember that what works for me won’t work for you. And what works for me in one season won’t work for me in another season.
Please celebrate where you are, who you are, the season of life you’re in, and the schedule you have. Please don’t feel discouraged by me and the crazy things I do over here sometimes.
Please do you and what works for you. And know that even if you get up at 11:30 am every morning, if that works for you and your family, there is no shame or guilt there.
You’re doing a great job. Keep it up!
A Photo I Had to Share
This photo moves me at a deep level. You see, this boy struggled for three years to learn how to read.
Both of his sisters started reading pretty easily at 4. He just couldn’t get it in preschool like they did. He couldn’t get it in kindergarten. He couldn’t get it in first grade.
We tried one curriculum. Then another. Then another.
Nothing worked.
He was frustrated because there was so much that he couldn’t do by himself without being able to read. He wanted to learn to read so badly and it just wasn’t clicking.
When he started going to school in the fall, we had him take first grade again — because we knew he really needed to be reading independently to move on to second grade.
We found out later that he pulled his teachers aside and told them that he couldn’t read and he didn’t really want the other kids to know so could they help him.
They were so amazing to quietly work with him and help him — without the other kids knowing — and then to do class reading exercises that were specifically designed to help Silas. They said within just a few weeks, he was able to be a part of the class reading groups — which made him so proud!
He has since really taken off with reading and spelling and, a few weeks ago, when we had parent-teacher conferences, his teachers told us he is reading and writing at first grade level!!!
I snuck this picture of him one morning this past week when he wasn’t looking. It’s of him reading the Bible verses for our morning breakfast/Bible reading.
He loves, loves, loves to look up the verses and read them all by himself. And my mama heart is just so proud of him for how far he’s come this year. But mostly, it makes me heart thrilled that he loves reading God’s Word!

I have been trying to figure out how to post a comment with no avail. I think I have finally stumbled across the magical posting box but who knows? I recently read, Tell the Wolves I’m Home which was wonderful but not super uplifting for those looking for a happy book. I rarely have time to read plus I am dyslexic which means I have to choose wisely to spend the time to read a book that often takes others 1/2 the time to read. That being said, I would love a recommended book from you! Thanks in advance for your generousity wether it sent to myself or someone else. I would love to “magically” receive a book if it is meant to be. If not, no worries. Happy summer to all!

Thank you for encouraging us to consider many options of routines, but to do what is best in light of our season in life and our family situation. Thanks for adding that bit in about your son. I also have a 1st grader who struggles with reading. She’s behind two older siblings who are gifted.
It’s a totally helpless feeling when you see you child struggling and you do all you can to help but it doesn’t seem to work. – It’s so heart breaking thearing your child ask God to her read in her prayers at night.
I definitely struggled these last two years because I felt I had left her down because with my older two, they caught everything so quickly and rarely needed my assistance in anything that it took my a while to realize that she needed a much higher level of help.
Thankfully she’s doing better now and she’s almost where she should be to be recommended for 2nd grade. We’re working so very hard to get her there because she has another sibling behind her that could catch her and that your shatter her self esteem. Also because my children are tall for their age and she’s already one of the tallest girls in her class.
It can be difficult to share that type of story. I have never shared it myself outside my immediate circle of family. But you sharing has helped me see that maybe there are others out there who may be feeling the same thing or experiencing something similar.

How are you able to get your kids to bed so early? Or are you going to bed before them?
My son is 14 and it’s a struggle to get him in bed by 9:30. My other son is 11 and has negotiated his bedtime to 9:10.
I would love to go to bed at 9 but the boys are in my room watching TV with us so I can’t go to sleep.
Crystal Paine says
They usually are in their room by 8 to 8:30, but often read or listen to Adventures in Odyssey until 9. They usually get up at 6:30 to 6:45 a.m. I’m a pretty big stickler for them getting a lot of sleep as they all seem to be much happier when they get a lot of sleep. 🙂
Ashley says
Right now I’m in between books. I recently finished “Desperate” by Sally Clarkson and Sarah Mae. Oh man, that book was powerful! My husband and I are working on finishing up Baby Step 3 of Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, so I’m reading a few chapters in his book to help out with that. After that, I have a couple books on tap that I may delve into. With kids in the house, I’m reading a lot of “Frog and Toad”, “Read-A-Loud Bible Stories”, and “Babybug” magazines. 🙂
Lynn L says
Can I be honest with you? Truthfully the most I get to read these days is a cookbook or two for just a few minutes as I am helping care for my month old baby granddaughter <3 and she's a MUCH BETTER pastime activity than any old book! Hope that is ok…:)

I am currently reading two books on dyslexia. As a reading specialist, I work with many kids each year who need a little boost to get up to speed with their reading. Most get really close to grade level within the school year but there are always a few who, despite what we try, just have trouble getting things to click. I’m working hard to find ways to reach them and hope to learn new techniques in these classes I’m taking that will work for these kiddos. SO proud of Silas for achieving this milestone! He is very lucky to have such caring adults in his life who helped him become successful! The fact that he’s using this new skill to read his bible makes this achievement all the more special!

Ah…the joys of reading. I have two boys that are struggling readers. Our oldest daughter taught herself to read, and I foolishly thought our oldest son would the same. He struggled and it was heart breaking! Finally, the summer between 4th and 5th grade, it clicked. He went from reading Nate the Great to Harry Potter that summer. He has amazing comprension skills as a result of his struggle. Our second son, is proving to follow a similar path. I’m far more relaxed about it this time around!
After one too many psychological thillers, I’m reading Persausion (Austen). It is so refreshing to read witty writing and a truely good story without feeling manipulated! Thanks for the chance at the giveaway.

I am between books right now. Because I have a fluctuating income, I decided to read books I have on hand or selections from the library. “Unoffendable” by Brant Hansen was recommended and there was one in my library system (at another library). I put a hold on it in early February and was the next on the list. I was told it was in transit between libraries. A couple weeks ago, still not having received it, I went to the library again and they put out a statewide request. I finally got it last week, after over a 2 month wait! We will be on a long plane trip for vacation this week, so I’m waiting until then to open it. It’s driving me crazy – like resisting sweets!

daughter. She does not like to read, so in an effort to help her enjoy reading
as well as spend some one on one time with her, we took turns reading
aloud to one another. The name of the book is “Out of My Mind” by
Sharon Draper. It tells the story of an eleven year old girl with cerebral palsey.
I was not familiar with this condition until reading this book. I have three
healthy kids and never really took the time to understand this condition and
the struggles these families have…it has had a profound effect on me…

Chrystal, thanks so much for saying what you did about “doing you” and not feeling bad if a lot of us don’t get up at 4:30 am lol…I appreciated it so much because so, so, so many bloggers don’t say that. Instead they boast and boast, and I read them and feel very lesser-than and cry and my husband tells me to please stop reading blogs! Tonight I feel encouraged that I have many of my ducks in a row before going to bed, I’ve loved my 6 kids and husband well today, and I plan to get up at 7 or 7:30 in the morning and do the good that God has planned for me tomorrow, even if it’s not what others are doing. I LOVE your blog and the real life you share. I am currently reading “In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day”. I found it at a library book sale for 10 cents. I recognized the title from one of your blog posts where you had read it so I picked it up. I am thankful to have recognized it from reading your blog, otherwise I may have missed this inspiring little book.

Right now I’m not reading any books. I promised myself I would read through the 20+ magazines that have piled up since October. But I have a few books waiting patiently on a bookshelf to be read. !y favorite book that I most recently read was The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up. Really made me stop and think about what I own, buy and get, and reevaluate what I spend money on.

I’m a new mom with a 5 month old. I’m currently reading Sassy Let’s Count! A first book of numbers which my daughter got from Imagination Library. I’d like to win this stack of books because I have a special needs daughter so I can’t bring her out because she can’t get sick or she can end up in the hospital- so I haven’t had a chance to go to the library. I understand Silas’ reading and your feelings – my daughter works so hard compared to other babies- even at such a young age. Maybe it’s just a mom thing, but when she finally gets something another baby her age may have gotten a while ago, it makes me soooo proud. I think the struggle helps me to thank God and be so thankful and proud 🙂

Loving this series and learning about these historical figures with my kiddos!

I’m reading Out of the Spin Cycle by Jen Hatmaker. It’s older, but I’m glad I picked it up.

I loved your encouragement on doing life the way YOUR OWN family/personality/life works best. It is so important that none of us thinks one way is BEST when it comes to the methods we implement in life. My current read is “Relationships-A mess worth making” by Paul David Tripp. His books are so good!

I’m a speech and debate coach, and lately I’ve been reading a lot of very heavy books, looking for interp pieces for my students for next year. Well, I am working my way through a few books right now. I am thoroughly enjoying the birds/spring this year so I decided to read through ‘Keeping A Nature Journal’ by Clare Walker Leslie & Charles E. Roth. I think this is one that will take me all summer to digest. We are finishing our school year this week and my thoughts are jumping ahead to next year wondering how we can make it an even better year. So I am reading ‘For The Children’s Sake’ by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay for inspiration. Lastly ‘Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World’ by Joanna Weaver has been such an encouragement to me in my spiritual walk. I absolutely love all the books in your give away pile and will be putting them on my wish list for sure. Thanks for taking time to write a peek in my life posts. Love reading them.

I just finished “The Course of Love” yesterday. It’s an interesting format: the love story (from meeting through kids) of a couple, interspersed with non-fiction commentary on relationships, etc. Since I am getting ready to celebrate my 20th anniversary in June, it was neat to read the perspectives presented. I am also reading “How to Live: Or a Life of Montaigne.” It’s a more cerebral read, but I am enjoying reading about his life and views. When I have a few minutes, I read a few segments from Tim Ferriss’s “Tools of Titans.” That one may take awhile for me to get through!

Hi, Crystal,
I look forward to your Peek Into My Life every week. It is now part of my Sunday routine to read it. I especially like to find out your book recommendations. I have purchased many of them, as, interestingly enough, my local library does not carry most of them, and it is a large metro area library. I have 🙂 been giving them titles as suggestions to purchase. Please keep recommending books. The ones you have been suggesting seem to be the ones I need for this season in my life, and I am grateful.

I just got “The Case Against Sugar” from the library. A recent favorite is “Scythe” by Neal Shusterman. It’s a dystopian story of life after humans have conquered death. It made me think a lot about what it means to be human and mortal, but it probably isn’t for everyone.

I wish I was reading something right now! I moved out of state 10 days ago. I had a few minutes on Friday to swing by the local library to get a card and some reading material but, wouldn’t you know it, they’re closed on Fridays! I start my new full-time job tomorrow so I probably won’t have time to go again until next weekend. In the meanwhile, my Amazon wish list keeps growing!
