What have you made yourself?

Simply Thrifty has a post up here (hat-tip to Lavonne!) with links to directions for 100 different things you can make yourself.

Just for fun, I’d love to know which of these items you’ve made yourself. Check out the list here and then tell us in the comments section!

Here’s what I’ve made from the list (not necessarily using the same directions, though):

Applesauce
Syrup
Jelly
Guacamole
Salsa
Gravy
Wedding Cake
Pancake Mix
Icecream
Pizza
Pickles
Playdough
Bubbles
Books
Laundry detergent
Baskets
Paper
Rubber Stamps
Jewelry
Candles
Skirt
Blouse
Bread
Pretzels
Doughnuts
Bagels
Tortillas

Now, not all of the items from the above list were great successes, but I have tried my hand at making them at least once. What about you? Oh and feel free to tell us if there are other things you’ve made which weren’t on this list, too!

I have a hunch that there’s probably at least a reader or two who has
made just about every single one of those 100 things. Some of you are
just amazing!

More Restaurant Deals:

Gretchen wrote to say that at least at her Chick-fil-a, they are celebrating Customer Appreciation Week and giving away something free every day. I’m not sure if this is nationwide or a local deal, but it might be worth checking into.

I lived in England for 8 years and I know how much it helps when people donate. For more info you can visit http://www.ocpnet.org/

Note from Crystal: I have been told that most overseas commissaries will accept coupons for up to six months past their expiration date. Is this correct? I always save my expired coupons for a few months and then stuff them into a flat rate mailer and send them to a woman I know in Germany who distributes them to other families on the base there.

Send a free postcard and more!

Hippopost

From Karen:

I recently discovered Hippopost, which allows you to upload a picture of your choice to be used as a postcard (you can also add a message).  Hippopost
will then print the postcard and the postage is covered by advertising
(mailed to the US and Canada only–I’m guessing you could send them if
you are located internationally, but would have to send them to a US or
Canadian address).

They are able to do this for free by placing a small advertisement
on the postcard. So long as you don’t mind sending a postcard t

hat has
an advertisement on it, this is a great freebie!

(Note from Crystal: I’m curious to know if anyone has successfully used this service before? If so, what were the advertisements on the card like?)

Those of you in the Green Bay area will want to check out the Free Kid’s Day on June 25. More details here.

Get a free bottle of Country Bob’s sauce here (if you haven’t already–Thanks, Karen!)

Free subscriptions available:

Woman’s Day magazine (you have to qualify–Thanks, Shannon!)
Good Housekeeping and more from AdPerk (requires watching commercials to qualify–Thanks, Joan!)

Polly from Nevada emailed me with this deal:

I
have been buying the Cascadian Farms Organic Purely Steam packages at
Wal-Mart for $1.22. After using the $1/1 Cascadian Farm coupon ($1)
they cost me $0.22! They make an excellent lunch and a yummy side dish.

When you sign up for this Muir Glen coupon,
you’ll also get a $1/1 any Cascadian Farms product coupon. You can
select that coupon only (just click to select which area of the page to
print) and print as many as you’d like! There are also $1/1 coupons here. Note: Not all stores have them at this price so be sure to take note of the price before buying.

 Carrie sent in this deal:

Suave
often has insert coupons for $1 off any size lotion. The 3.25 oz. size,
which is bigger than a trial size, costs $0.97 at my local Wal-mart,
thus making it free! It’s a great way to stock up on lotion.

Did you find any other great deals at Wal-Mart? If so, let us know!

Extended Warranties: Do you think they are worth the money?

My laptop broke last week for at least fifth time since I’ve had it.

Gratefully, I have an extended warranty on it, a backup laptop, and almost all of my business stuff is virtual (not computer-dependent). As you can tell, I’ve been around this track one too many a time to not have a back-up plan in place.

The fix just took one phone call and a short consultation with tech support and in minutes they promised to send a new adapter–all free of charge. Two days later, the adapter arrived on my doorstep and my computer was fixed… yet again.

When I bought the laptop, it was my first laptop to purchase and my first time to decide to fork over the extra money for an extended warranty. Knowing how often I use my computers and knowing my track record with breaking them, my husband and I felt it was a wise choice.

That extra $300 or so for the extended warranty felt like a lot at the time, but it’s paid for itself many times over in the last two years. I’ve had my keyboard replaced, my adapter replaced twice, the motherboard replaced (a tech came to our home to do that; I didn’t know anyone still made "house calls" these days!), and spent more than five hours put together on the phone with tech support.

If I had had to take my computer in and get it fixed each of these times, I do not doubt it would have been quite a bit more than that initial $300 for the extended warranty. And I would have also had to hassle with taking it in and picking it up, not to mention finding a reliable tech store in the first place.

When I bought my second laptop, I didn’t blink twice when the associate asked if I wanted to buy a warranty. He was all prepared to explain the different warranties to me when I blurted out confidently, "I’ll take the three-year extended warranty." And guess what? We’ve already made good use of it on the second laptop.

I’ve come to the conclusion that at least for us, buying an extended warranty on laptops is a no-brainer. It saves headache, it saves time, and it saves money.

Do you buy extended warranties or do you think they are a waste of money?

Unlike other automotive Web sites, DriverSide has brought together every available car and truck-related resource in one place and made it accessible and free.

Free Directory Service – From Becca:

Program 800-FREE-411 (800-373-3411) into your cell phone.This
no-cost directory service works like 411…sort of. After you dial in, you’ll
hear a brief 10-second ad before a recorded voice asks the usual "What
city and state?" Savings up to $3.50 per call.

Excedrin Rebate – From Mike:

I was
paging through my coupon inserts from last week and came across a rebate form up
to $4.99 for 24ct Excedrin Back & Body. I know there are lots of
Excedrin coupons floating around from pervious inserts, as I still have a couple
$2.00 coupons specifically for any Excedrin Back $ Body product. I thought
this might be a good item to use at CVS to reach your $15/$20 total, and in
return make some money at the same time.
Red Robin Coupons – From Audrey:

My family and I recently discovered how much we enjoy Red Robin
burgers. After filling out the comment card at the restaurant, I
received a $1 off for you and a friend coupon in the mail, and a $3 off
coupon by email. We plan on using them to return to Red Robin for
Father’s Day.

LowerMyBills.com – From Eunice:

We have used www.LowerMyBills.com various times to check our landline rates and I just did it again today. I checked with our current company to see if they could match the rate, which they wouldn’t. So, I switched, and will save the $1.97 monthly service charge plus we’re getting a lower instate and out-of- state rate. We are charged a $5.00 one-time fee to change, but will recoup that in no time at all.  Some companies will credit the switching fee, so just do your homework.

Target: Deals for this week

Thanks to Mercedes and Sarah for giving me the heads’ up on this deal:

Some
areas of the country got the coupon pictured above in the Sunday inserts. It is for $5 off any three Johnson’s baby, Band-Aid, Carefree, Stayfree,
Neosporin, or Tylenol products.

For those who got this coupon (and if your area got them, you might want to try and round up some more newspapers!) here are some deal ideas:

*Band-Aids Deal–Free Plus Possible Overage!*

This week Band Aids are on sale 20%. They are usually are
$1.97, so with the sale and coupon you end up getting them for free.
The coupon should self-adjust. You can use $0.75/1 Band-Aid coupons here or the $1/1 or $0.50/1 coupons from the 04/27 or 05/11 Redplum inserts and get up to $3 overage!

*Johnson’s Buddies Bodywash Deal–$0.08 each!*

You
can also use them to get Johnson’s Buddies Products for $0.08 each. It retails for around $2.74 so after this coupon and
manufacturer’s coupons, you will be paying $0.08 for one bottle. There is
a manufacturer printable here and there were manufacturer’s coupons on the 4/27 RP inserts.

Sarah wrote:

We got a buddies soap (.94) and buddies shampoo
(2.64) and a neosporin (3.11 – sale). I used a $1/1 Neosporin coupon and got all
three for $0.79! I could have gotten all free things, but we needed the Neosporin. Just wanted to let you know. The best part is that all of the
Johnson’s and Neosporin products are also on sale this week.

More deals for this week:

Little Debbie Snack Cakes –  on sale for $1
Use $0.75/1 coupon here

$1/box after coupons

More deals from last week which are still going on:

Powerade Zero is $0.79 at some stores
Use the .75/1 coupon from 06/08 insert
$0.04 after coupon (Thanks, Wendy!)

Use the $1/1 Archer Farms Deli cheese coupon here and buy cheese in $1 amounts to get it free!
You’ll need to figure out the weight which would make it $1. Based upon
the typical price of $4.99-$6.99 a pound, you’d ask for anywhere from
0.15 pound to 0.20 pound. You can get multiple bags per visit (some
stores have a limit of 3 to 5 of the same Target coupons per visit,
though) and end up with lots of free cheese!

Target also recently released a $5/2 coupon on Pampers wipes and
diapers.

Since it is a Target coupon, you can also combine it with the
$2/2 manufacturer’s coupon which came out in the 06/01insert. If you
don’t have a CVS store, this is a fairly good price for a jumbo pack of
wipes and diapers:

*Deal*

Wal-Mart instead of Target.
