Last week, my husband came home with a bouquet of beautiful roses. Not for any other reason than just because.
I looked at the price tag (I know, I know, I just can’t help myself! I always look at the price tag first thing whenever I pick up anything!) and I smiled.
He knows me so well.
I love flowers – especially when my husband gives them to me at random times instead of a Hallmark holiday – but I love more the fact that my husband knows a $4 Aldi bouquet is just as beautiful to me than a $40 bouquet from a specialty shop.

There’s this guy who comes around to my office and sells real flowers. But I also found out he sells wooden roses. About 2 years ago, I bought 2 dozen of them for a grand total of $40 for the whole kit and caboodle. That may sound like a lot, but remember this…. these flowers are wooden. that means they won’t die, or wilt, and there’s no water to change. They look more real than silk roses, too. I bought a cheap bottle of rose oil at the drug store perfume department, and about once a month or so, just lightly mist the roses. They’re a centerpiece on my dining room table, and I couldn’t be happier. I bought another smaller 2 dozen for $20 (the buds are slammer) in blue and purple, and twisted the wire stems and put them in a ceramic flower pot I got on my birthday that used to have real flowers from a florist. It sits on top of my fridge, pretty as a picture.
And the roses are so realistic looking, my mother-in-law wanted some. And them my aunt, and then our nieghbor. I’ve got like 6 requests for wooden roses. And I’d rather have them than browning wilting real ones any day.

Ooh! I love it!

Awww! How sweet. I love it!! I always look at price tags too, can’t help myself!

This reminds me of a conversation once, where someone (single) said that you can’t buy your wife flowers from Albertson’s. Someone else said, “You know what’s sad? I’d be thrilled if my husband brought me flowers, even from Albertson’s.” And I thought about how my husband had just bought me flowers at Walmart, but that I almost wished he hadn’t, because money was so tight. At least the Walmart ones I could enjoy. A $40 bouquet from the florist would have stressed me out way too much.
Lisa says
@Becky, you’re so right! During our first year of marriage my hubs was purchasing flowers online and having them sent via the mail. After the 2nd delivery I told him how thoughtful the flowers were but the price of them was stressing me out! We frequented our farmer’s market and purchased flowers together for a fraction of the cost!
Lisa says
What an amazing deal! Cut flowers can be very expensive. My husband and I were buying flowers for a family member that had a baby. The cut flowers were $10. We found a potted geranium for $3! The florist wrapped the potted plant in pretty pink paper and we attached a small “it’s a boy” card to the wrapping! The happy couple can now plant the geranium in their garden.
Becky says
Love it! My hubby does the same with flowers just because. Before they would be from Costco but now Aldi!! Depending on where you live you can have your hubby get a great bottle of wine from Aldi for 2.99 to go along with the flowers. Now that would be a perfect compliment! 🙂
Anne Marie @ Married to the Empire says
How very sweet!
I rarely get flowers. Not because my husband isn’t thoughtful, but because he is. We have a water-obsessed cat who can’t resist a vase full of water. He knocks them over and makes a horrific mess. *sigh* But having my sweet furball is worth a life without cut flowers.
Courtney says
@Anne Marie @ Married to the Empire, Our cat does the same thing, except she not only plays in the water, she tries to eat the flowers! The only safe place to put them is up on our fireplace mantel where she can’t jump.
Tami says
I like getting Aldi flowers, if they are in good condition. My greatest flower finds: our locak grocery used to give me their old veggies for my chickens every week. Every now and again a few bouquets of flowers were in the box. I would pull them out, pick off the dead petals, and have flowers in my kitchen for a week! The produce lady laughed when I told her stole the flowers from the chickens, but suddenly we were getting flowers in our boxes more often. Can’t beat a dozen roses for free!
Also, I’m with you Crystal, flowers are more special on non-holidays!
Susan Seegers says
As everyone here, I too am a huge fan of Aldi flowers…and for some reason they seem to last longer. Maybe just my skewed view because they were such a great price! As for great gifts that don’t cost a penny, I have heart shaped rocks from all over the world from my husband. I love my rocks!
Marisa Stone O'Brien says
My husband is totally romantic and buys me flowers from time to time. For mother’s day this year I asked to begin buying me a plants instead. Now, everytime, I look at the plant he bought me it not only reminds me how much he loves me, but how much respects me. I just adore my husband!
Lana says
I am the same way BUT my daughter sent me roses for Mother’s Day via an online order from China when she and her husband were on the mission field. That made my day as I did not expect them at all.
Sarah says
aww, so romantic!
Amy says
Awe. Its those moments that are so sincere they mean more then anything else could!
Rachel says
yes, i love aldi’s. after moving from florida we lost publix but gained an aldi’s!
Heather@familyfriendlyfrugality says
They are beautiful!!!!
Bonita says
He sounds thoughtful on all counts!
Cheryl says
I am so with you on this one!! I LUV flowers but hate the price tag. I pick up Aldi’s flowers from time to time for myself. 🙂
Veggiemomof2 says
I totally agree with you & even posted about it 2 years ago here.
Joy says
I don’t know if I’m more jealous over the Aldi roses or the fact that some of your dhs get your flowers spur of the moment no matter where they came from. Such sweet and romantic guys. Someone give my dh a hint will ya? About being sweet and romantic that is. Doesn’t even have to be flowers or something bought. Just any sweet gesture would be nice.
Lana says
@Joy, I can tell you the secret to that after 32 years of marriage-respect. No male can resist it and it melts their heart. Try it.
charity crawford says
Oh how adorable!
Adrienne says
My husband cuts me a beautiful bouquet of apple blossoms every year around Mother’s Day. This started when our kids were really young, and I look forward to the apple blossoms being ready every spring.
The Prudent Homemaker says
That is an amazing price!
My husband always tells me that I can buy my own flowers 🙂 Not real romantic, but I do get to make sure they’re fresh 🙂
In that spirit, I have bought flowers for the garden. When we look at the arrangements on the table that I’ve made, my husband says something about the beautiful flowers he bought me 🙂
It’s not the same as being surprised with flowers–that is wonderful–but having flowers that keep producing every year is really wonderful!
Lea Stormhammer says
Your post made me smile, Crystal!
John loves to buy me flowers too and one year bought a fund raising thing from someone simply because it was a free (though small) bouquet of flowers each month for a year from a local florist. I had no idea until it was all over – I had just loved getting the flowers each month for no reason at all!
Your flowers are lovely – and unless you tell someone they cost $4, who can tell the difference from a $40 bunch?
Lea
Jessica Lynette says
How sweet of your husband! And I saw someone mentioned it – but it’s true about trimming the leaves and adding bleach. And the bottom of the stems should be cut at an angle. That’s all my worldly wisdom on flowers 🙂
And forget the “5 Love Languages” business. There’s 6 – the 6th being summed up as “husbands who buy their frugal wives {nice} discount gifts.”
I love when Paul gets me flowers (or anything!) regardless of price, but when it is a deal it makes me feel even more loved – because it means he gets me. Really gets me. And I like that 🙂
Brandy says
I do love my $4 Aldis bouquets. Those are really pretty.
Kim says
My sweet husband planted me rose bushes and he went out and cut some of them and put them in a vase on the table last Sunday. Sometimes he’ll cut one and have the kiddos bring it to me 🙂 I’ve given them away, put a bunch in the bedroom where my guests were staying…many purposes. He planted salmon colored ones and a beautiful pink bush as well. We don’t even have to spend gas money to go get them!
jan says
quick tip on roses- if you squeeze the base of the flower and it is very hard the rose if fresh- if it feels soft and mushy the rose is old- also peel off the outside 2 petals when you get home- a florist taught me this
Jennifer says
The last time I was at Aldi’s they had bouquets of half dozen roses for 50 CENTS!!! I couldn’t believe it! There was one rose with a brown spot and I just cut it off.
Melissa says
My FIL works at a gospel rescue mission, and they get flowers donated to them every now and then (not sure why…). Since my husband carpools with his dad most days, when they get flowers, my FIL will send home a bouquet with my hubby, but he always says, “Tell Melissa I was thinking about her all day.” lol He’s such a character. Seriously, I love it, and so does my husband, because they’re free! What can I say…I married into a Dutch family! 😉
Marisa Stone O'Brien says
Melissa,
That is so sweet…what an awesome FIL.
My husband and I were having a “disagreement” one kids when my in-laws were taking the kids for the day. My FIL brought me back flowers. He is so darn sweet.
Rhonda says
I hate the money my husband spends on flowers, although I love the thought. I need to put a bug in his ear about Kroger clearance flowers. Maybe I’ll get them more often (wink-wink).
Also, I have to share this. My 2 year old daughteer and 3 year old son come in at least once a day with a leaf or a tall weed from the backyard and give it to me with a “Happy Mother’s Day, Mama!” I LOVE IT! I pop my weeds or leaves in a small cup and sit them on the bar as a reminder of how much I adore my children, even when they are suffering with the “terrible two’s/three’s”.
Crystal says
My husband would totally splurge on flowers for me, but once I told him I much prefer Aldi bouquets, he usually gets those.
I still love him to pieces when he occasionally decides to go whole hog and order something nicer, though. 🙂
Rhonda says
@Crystal,
Don’t get me wrong, I totally love when he brings me flowers. So, in my own nonchalant way, I mentioned the manager’s special on flowers at Kroger and Mark just grinned. We’ll see if it works.
Susan J says
I agree! My hubby likes to surprise me with Aldi’s roses as well, and he’s been disappointed the past several months since he’s been working from home and not “out” a lot. I think he’s more bummed about the rose shortage around here than I am! =)
Courtney says
My husband has bought me many beautiful flowers over the years, but now that our finances are so tight, he’s been picking flowers for me. We live out in the country and are lucky enough to be surrounded by wildflowers, so he has assembled some beautiful bouquets (even though he is the manly type who doesn’t know the first thing about flower arranging!)
Your roses are gorgeous, Crystal, and your husband is obviously a keeper! 🙂
Crystal says
Oh my goodness! That has got to be the sweetest thing ever. Maybe I should put that bug in my husband’s ear! 🙂
Darcy says
Those are definitely beautiful roses!!! Plus when they are more affordable I’d feel less guilty about letting them die. 😀 I’m bad with plants…
kate says
My husband surprises me with Aldi’s roses sometimes as well, and I am blessed! One time he bought me beautiful ones similar to the ones in the picture, and I tried drying them. Even though I didn’t really know how to do it properly, they turned out beautiful dried, and I’m still enjoying them at least a year later!
Heather says
@kate,
At the floral shop I used to work at we would hang them upside down from the ceiling to dry them out. Worked great!
Kristie says
What a sweetie! You are lucky to have a nice husband. I just wanted to add that the flowers are consistently that great. I need them several times a year for dance recitals and band programs for my two little girls. It means the world to them to receive the flowers, they do not know where they came from, and I get so many compliments on them as I wait to pick up the girls when the show is over. No one suspects they are from a discount grocer, and as much as we are on a tight budget, it is the little things that count so much.
Alicia @ Alicia's Homemaking says
I seriously need an Aldi’s! 😀
MaryEllen says
Love it! My mom taught me well – this is what I’m planning to pick up for her birthday! She’ll be thrilled that I thought of her, and thrilled that I got them at ALDI.
Rachel says
They’ll last longer if you trim all the leaves that fall below the water line. Also, add a tiny bit of bleach to the water.
Crystal says
Thanks so much for that tip!
Melanie says
@Crystal, I don’t know that I would add any extra bleach if you have already added a floral food packet. That’s usually what’s in them — bleach and sugar. :o)
Claire says
So happy to learn that I am not the only one! He’s really speaking my “love language” b/c not only is he getting me flowers but he’s also being frugal about it!
Sara says
I totally agree! My husband came home from work once with a bouquet for me and it was beautiful. He confessed to me after a day or two that he took it out of a garbage bag full of bouquets for some event at work! LOL
Kelly Morris says
I buy my flowers at Aldi when I see them and I have been totally pleased!
Wendy says
I love a bargain too but as a florist I have to balk when I read the argument about not spending the money on something just because it is going to die. 🙂 🙂 In that case, he should never take you out to dinner either, because you only get to enjoy that for an hour approx. and then what happens to it. 🙂 At least the flowers last for days if not a week or more (depending on type and freshness)!! 🙂 Keep in mind I am saying this with a smile on my face!!! Really!! I am!! 🙂
dee says
@Wendy,
When my husband and I were dating, he sent a dozen long-stem roses to my office. I called them the “jaw-dropper roses” because everyone’s jaw dropped when they walked into my office. I kept those suckers alive as long as I could. They were absolutely gorgeous!
For everyday, I can appreciate a bouquet from Aldi’s. For special occasions, I do love the quality of my local florist and have no problem supporting them with my business.
Kristen says
That’s great! 🙂 I’m the same way, I see no point in paying so much for the same quality and beauty.
Jen says
I couldn’t agree more and have and the same thought many times!
rachael says
The only two places that my husband gets me flowers from…..Sams Club and Aldi’s. love it! =)
Stephanie says
i love that! the simple things in life i believe are the most special and memorable….even when my children pick dandelions for me! =)
Brandy says
@Stephanie, I have a dried out dead dandelion on my kitchen window seal that I received from my daughter (now 6) about a year ago. The boys were very young and wanted to give me something also (2 and 3 now), so they both got it down and gave it to me. Well, here we are a year later and still every once in a while one of my 3 kids will give it to me again just because and I LOVE IT! I can’t bring myself to throw it away and no one in the house has every questioned why I haven’t. Nor, have they ever mentioned this little game out loud. It just happens. I love little traditions like this.
Jennifer says
@Brandy, I agree – big difference in quality between the florist and the discount stores. I need my flowers to smell good!! Everyone values different indulgences.
Stephanie says
@Brandy, that is so sweet!
Doreen says
I love it when I get a living plant. . . preferable a perenial instead of roses. Then I can enjoy it for YEARS!!!! Sure roses are fun too, and Aldi has beautiful ones, I’ve received them too!
Cilicia says
Same way I feel, Crystal!!! 🙂 I LOVE Aldi’s price on roses! One time my husband ordered roses for me through the mail, and I was so upset with the money he spent(around $50), but I highly encourage him to buy me roses anytime he wants, FROM ALDI! 😉 Not to mention, you can get a couple bouquets for that price!
Angi says
That’s so fun! Our Walmart marks down their flowers on Thursday, so when I go I usually pick up some carnations for $2.50. When my husband comes home, I say “Thanks for the flowers. I loooooove them!” And he says, “You’re worth it! I’m so glad I can buy you flowers.” My children think we’re silly, but when people come over and notice the flowers they always tell them that they are from Dad and then tell them the story.
amy says
Crystal…I am the same way! I tell my husband that I would much rather have a flower picked off the side of the road than to spend $40 or more on something that would eventually die!
Amy says
Trader Joe’s also has great prices on some beautiful flowers at $3.99!
Chloe says
Are the flowers at Aldi really only $4?
