The following reader tip is from Rachel:
Our family has some insurance, but not on prescriptions. I shop a lot at Kroger and recently realized that we could save a BUNCH on our prescriptions if we joined the Kroger Rx Savings Club.
The club costs $32 per year for individuals and $72 per year for a family. This annual fee paid for itself when we filled my husband’s $100 prescription for only $28.50 at Kroger!
Their website allows you to enter your medication information and to figure out what the cost would be as part of the Kroger Rx Savings club.
NOTE: A family plan is good for up to 6 members (including pets!) and could potentially be a great option for those without traditional insurance.
What is your best advice for saving money on medical expenses?

I love the Kroger Rx program. I have a Medicare advantage plan insurance with prescription insurance (long story- former lawyer who lost vision to the point of being retired on disability)- I use the Kroger plan for my meds, and it costs me $2 more than my insurance would. But then I get my inhaler on my insurance, and I don’t go in the donut hole (it’s super expensive)! Can’t recommend this enough- and yes, I have checked goodrx- another great sight, but this one worked best for me!

Look into Good RX. They have an app and physical discount cards. There is no annual fee or cost involved. We save SO much using this, even over the good insurance we already have. They also cover pet prescriptions. I picked up an RX today that would have cost $59, I paid $16. That’s a huge difference.

Yes I agree with this! If you use the app there are even more coupons and savings beyond just showing a good Rx card. For maintenance meds, play around with the amount of tablets/ml/etc on the app- often a 90 day prescription is even more savings than a 30 day prescription (this is true for many insurances as well). You can also pull up the app at the doctors office, type in the med they are prescribing and find the cheapest place to have it filled. That way you can tell the doctor right then and there where to send it, and ask for a 90 day Rx if it’s cheaper.

Earlier this year I did a bunch of really on RXs. The savings was even more with the Kroger savings plan even compared to GoodRX. I suggest comparing it still. We have over a hundred dollars a month on pretty basic RXs.

Negotiate everything. Ds had a minor surgery, but after insurance, we still need $1800 to the hospital. It took one phone call to trim that to $1106. Still a large amount, but then they offered a payment plan of $100 a month for 11 months with no interest. They can write off some of it, so it’s worth a call even if you have the cash.
