I made two of these last year to keep my kiddos busy during a cross-country road trip. I used big empty peanut butter jars with raw rice.

Get a small tub and fill with sand or rice.
Put it on top of a plastic shower curtain or tablecloth in the middle of the floor.
Give them some cups, spoons, funnels whatever.
Let them have at it!!

I just gave my girlfriend all of my sons “I Spy” books so I send her the link for this activity.

Another quiet and simple, self-contained “church toy” is to take a small empty bottle that has a lid. Cut drinking straws so they are a little shorter than the length of the bottle. Little ones love to dump them out and feed them through the small neck over and over. If they shake it, it’s not noisy. If the straws fall, ditto.
It’s not the flashiest toy you’ll have in your purse, but it *is* good for hand-eye coordination. 😀

I did this with my 3-4 year old sunday school class to go with a lesson about being thankful for our eyes. They LOVED them- and so did all their older siblings!
I also took it as a craft to our family reunion and did it with an older age group of kids (5-9) and they loved them as well- the parents said they were a great distraction as many of them had long car and/or plane rides home!

I did this for my then six year old twins when we drove to Disney World a couple of years ago. I had small prizes for finding certain items as well. It kept them busy – and quiet! – for hours. And by the way – yes we paid cash for that trip to Disney World! 🙂
