How can you tell if it’s free? It let me set up an account, but I don’t see anything about costs at all.

  • We’ve used this the past two years and were very satisfied with it – planning on using it this year too.

Anyone know what the stipulations (income, filing status, etc) are for it being free? I hate when companies like this advertise it being “free” and then you get all the way through the process, only to figure out you don’t qualify for it being free! And then since you’ve done all the work on their software they just figure you’ll pay their fee instead of re-doing it.

Okay, I just answered my own question when I stumbled upon this Yahoo article that breaks down all the “free” filing websites:

Here’s what is says about this free H & R one:
      H&R Block’s Free File
You are eligible for the free e-file if your adjustable gross income was less than $57,000 a year and you were 52 years old or younger as of Dec. 31. H&R Block also offers free state e-files for those living in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina or Virginia. All other state residents can file their returns for $14.95.
