Have you heard of Le Tote? It’s a clothing rental service that sends you boxes of clothes/accessories based on your size and according to your styles. You keep the clothes for as long as you’d like to keep them and wear them. Then, when you’re ready to return them, you mail them back and they’ll send you another box of clothes.
I’ve wanted to try it out for a long time, so when I saw that Groupon was offering a deal on 2 months of Le Tote, I jumped on it. I had fun trying out the service and wanted to write a completely honest review on my experience.
How LeTote Works
- Sign up for your first tote. They offer three different plans: 3 clothing items + 2 accessories for $59/month, 4 clothing items for $69/month, or 5 clothing items + 3 accessories for $79/month.
- Fill out your style profile — this includes detailed questions on your sizing, colors you like, styles you like, and more. (It’s more thorough than Stitch Fix, in my opinion.)
- Add items you like from their extensive collections to “your closet” on their site so that they can pick from some of them for your tote.
- Wait for a day or two while they style your tote based upon your style profile.
- Once your tote is ready, you can go in and choose to swap out any of the items they chose for other items. This way, you can really customize the items in your tote to what suits you best.
- Receive your tote in the mail and wear the items for as long as you’d like.
- Once you are ready to return them, you just stick the items in the pre-paid bag and ship it back. (No need to wash or dry clean anything! You can also choose to purchase any of the items you’d like to keep.)
- As soon as they receive your bag, they’ll get another tote ready for you and you can repeat the process over again.
What I Liked About Le Tote
You get to customize your tote. You knew exactly what they were sending you because you got to see your tote ahead of time and swap out anything that wasn’t a good fit for you.
You don’t have to pay for dry cleaning. You just ship your items back — without washing or dry cleaning them!
You can try new styles. I tried a pair of jeans out that was in a style and color I’ve always wanted to try. I decided I didn’t like the style ultimately, but it was fun to try it out and wear them a few times so I could decide that.
You can put together an outfit for an upcoming event. If you have an upcoming event that you need to buy a new outfit for, you may be able to find great clothes for it from LeTote — and pay less than you’d pay to buy a completely new outfit.
They offer maternity selections. This might be one of the coolest options they offer! You can rent maternity clothes and then send them back as you progress through pregnancy to get larger sizes!
What I Didn’t Like About Le Tote
It is expensive! The cheapest plan is $59 per month! Yes, the clothes are high-quality, but that’s still a LOT to pay just to rent clothes.
Their styles were very trendy. I typically wear more classic styles and I prefer colors to neutrals. I found that they had a lot of items that were too trendy for me and a lot of items that were black or grey.
The clothes may have been worn by someone else. While the clothes were all in like-new condition, it still might bother you to know they’ve been worn by other people — especially if you’re not a consignment/thrift store shopper!
I found it wasn’t as fun as Stitch Fix. One of the things I love about Stitch Fix is that I don’t have to shop, I don’t have to look through racks of clothes, I don’t have to make decisions. A box of clothes just shows up at my doorstep and I get to be surprised. Sometimes, they really miss the mark, but I still find it fun to be surprised. With Le Tote, I felt like it required more work and effort because I had to look through pages of clothes on their site to swap out what they had picked for items I would like better.
You have to pay extra for insurance. If you pay for insurance, you don’t have to worry about rips or spills on the clothing. But it’s a small extra charge for this. If you don’t pay for insurance, they will charge you if you rip an item or spill something on it and ruin it.
You may have issues cancelling your subscription. I have heard from a few people that they’ve had issues cancelling their subscription. I plan to cancel mine as soon as my two-month subscription is up and I’ll let you know if I have any issues.
Have you tried out Le Tote? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
Just signed up to try Le Tote as recommended by my daughter. I have been doing weight watchers and although it’s working, the turn around in buying clothes is expensive. I haven’t met my goal weight and I’m still loosing so renting instead of buying hopefully will work for me. Thanks for the review can’t wait to receive the first delivery.
I really like Le tote! It is a fun way to always have something new to wear and keeps me from “impulse shopping” or feeling like there is nothing in my closet!
I find it hard to find specifically what you are looking for that is available in your size when you want it, so you have to be flexible. However, as long as you put a ton of options in your closet, there will always be fun things available to try! I’ve liked the quality of all items, and find their fit recommendations extremely helpful, so you always know what size to try or what items might not be a good fit!
I do find their search filters to not work very well, but if you play around and try searching a lot of different ways, you’ll just keep finding things you like to add to your closet!
I love Le Tote. I like that I get to see & choose what I get. I have the $49/mth plan & feel it works well for me. If you buy everything in 1 tote each month, the next month us free. I bought a complete tote for $42 this month so obviously that is a win for me. I time it so I get a new tote every week, wear items once to see if I like them enough to keep & send back what I don’t like. Compared to Stitch Fix, I like Le Tote better for the simple fact I get to actually wear it for a time not just try it on & I get to choose what I get. Stitch Fix us very expensive especially if they miss the mark completely. My last 2 fixes have been eh to say the least.
Hi. Can you please share how you are getting totes every week, which plan option that is? I have the classic plan, $69 us tax a month – only one a month with 5 items.
Thanks!
I think they recently changed their plans, as their unlimited totes per month runs $150.
I’m really enjoying it because I’m not an adventurous buyer either. I use it for work clothes and tend to send the tote back after a week so I get a few totes a month. I like being able to customize for what I need (parties or weather) and trying new things without buying. I actually really like that the stuff is on the trendy side because I don’t usually buy trendy items. I’m really looking forward to spring and summer when I plan to choose lots of dresses because when I wear a beautiful dress and get compliments, I don’t like to wear it too frequently. Sometimes I’ve spent money on dresses that I’ll only wear two or three times a season. The monthly fee might seem like too much but I’ve decided not to buy items for special occasions (Christmas party, New Years) and take advantage of the service.
I used Le Tote when I worked at an office and I loved it. When it comes to clothes I like volume, which isn’t frugal and takes up a lot of space in the closet. This way I could have a lot of clothing without as much guilt. The price wasn’t bad if you were dressing up daily for work and you used that as your clothing allowance for better quality items. When I started telecommuting I had to cancel my service and was able to do so quickly and without any problems. If I return to an office again I will likely restart this service as after 3 years of telecommuting my clothing is mostly athletic wear at this point.
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! That was great to hear!
That’s a really interesting service and I loved your thorough review and pros/cons. It doesn’t currently fit my budget but if I were working more and had the cash I think I would enjoy it! I love that you can customize your tote (though I totally get that’s more work than Stitch Fix and I might get tired of it!), and I think I would actually enjoy the variety of getting to rent instead of buy.
You’re so welcome! I’m glad you found the review helpful!
Cute earrings!
I got my first Le tote after your you tube video yesterday and I’m so happy with it!! It’s like keeping all my stitch fix but for $59 and enjoying them for the “honeymoon period” and then sending them back saving me about $200.
Do you mind if I ask how it saves you $200? Do you usually spend $250 dollars a month on clothes?
I’m genuinely curious, because the idea of spending $59 a month on renting clothes sounds crazy to me! 🙂 But I do shop fairly thriftily for clothes and prefer to find items that I’ll love and wear over and over again, so I’m guessing I just have a totally different approach to clothes. I’ve been wondering about who might love this subscription since I heard about it a few years ago. 🙂
Typically if I buy my whole “fix” it’s about 250$. I do like to get a fix a month or every other month. My preferences for my fixes though are set higher and I usually only get dresses. So if I get the five items from Le tote which are similar to my fixes it’s saving me that much.
Oh, got it! I missed the stitch fix part. I can see that! Thanks! 🙂
