What Is Capital One Shopping?
Capital One Shopping is a simple and free way to help you save online. It takes the work out of it for you — no more digging for coupon codes, price comparing, and searching endlessly for deals.
The Capital One Shopping browser extension instantly searches for available savings and applies them automatically for you! In the last year alone, it found customers more than a total of $160 million in savings!!
You can add it to many different browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge.
How Does Capital One Shopping Work?
In order to take advantage of Capital One Shopping, you just add the extension to your preferred browser and it starts looking for savings for you! There are a few different ways it helps you save.
As you’re browsing your favorite online retailer sites, a helpful pop-up will appear to show you available coupon codes. The extension will figure out the best one and automatically add it to your shopping cart!
On select retailer sites (Amazon, Target, and Best Buy included), the extension will do a price comparison for you! It will tell you whether or not you’re getting the best available price or if the product you’re eyeing is cheaper somewhere else online. It even includes tax and shipping details. (As you can see in the screenshot below, the extension is showing me that I have the best available price on that bookshelf. How cool!)
You can also earn Capital One Shopping Credits on many retailer sites that you can redeem at any time for select gift cards in your Capital One Shopping account.
Pros & Cons
If you’re wondering whether this savings extension is for you, here’s my very honest Capital One Shopping review. This is what I liked and didn’t like about it…
Pros
- It’s free to anyone! It doesn’t matter if you’re a Capital One customer or not. Just add it to your browser — easy as that!
- There are no ads. Sometimes free extensions and browser add-ons come with ads, which I hate. It’s really nice that this extension is ad-free.
- It’s super quick and doesn’t slow down your online shopping experience.
- I was really impressed with the savings as I browsed different sites and products online. As mentioned above, there are SO many ways to save — including automatic coupon codes, price comparisons and tracking, and Credits to redeem for gift cards. It even saved me $100 on a purchase. I was SO excited by the surprise savings!!
- The coupon codes are added to your shopping cart automatically. It makes it really easy!
- It factors in Prime. I love that when you sign up, you tell them if you have Amazon Prime. They factor this into price comparisons when you’re shopping on Amazon. So cool!
- The price comparison tool is amazing. This is probably my favorite part of the extension. It’s SO nice to know that when I’m shopping on Amazon or Target, I’m getting a better price compared to other retailers. And if I’m not, it will tell me where I can find a better price! So helpful!!
- You can redeem your shopping Credits for gift cards at any time. A lot of other savings programs only allow you to redeem for cash or gift cards at a certain threshold. I thought it was really neat that at any time, you can specify the amount you want to cash in for a gift card.
Cons
- You have to “sign up” to use the extension. I had to create an account with my full name, email address, and zip code before I could start using the extension. I much prefer browser extensions that don’t require this. The sign-up process was a little tedious in the beginning, too. (Although, there was an option to skip most of the steps, so that’s good!).
- You have to allow some permissions for the extension to work. If you are really protective of your online privacy, this could be bothersome. In order for the extension to work properly, it has to be able to read your browsing history and the sites you visit. (This is common with almost all extensions, but I still wanted to point it out.)
- It’s only available on desktop. As of right now, you can not add the browser extension to a mobile device, so it can only be used when shopping on a computer.
- The price comparison tool is only for select retailers. I wish the price comparison tool worked for all retailers, since that was my favorite part of the savings extension!
- I wasn’t super impressed with the gift card selection. Although you can redeem for gift cards at any time, I wasn’t thrilled with the options. I would have loved to see Amazon, Starbucks, or iTunes. (That being said, they did have some great ones like Kohl’s, Walmart, Lowe’s, Fandango, and Nordstrom Rack.)
