What product or concoction do you use to clean the inside of your oven?

I just used water and a rag. 🙂 Someone else here might have some better ideas.

This sounds like a ridiculously stupid question to me, but our new (rental) house has an oven with a clean button. Is a self-cleaning oven effective in actually getting it clean, or is good ‘ole elbow grease the best option? I’m pregnant and don’t care to use any harsh chemicals to get the job done. If I go with the self cleaning option do I just push the button? Help! LOL!
Scared says
I’m actually scared to push that self-clean button, because I’ve heard it takes a while and it stinks when you do it! So, I’m conveniently choosing the “or” option on Crystal’s cleaning schedule, and I’m just going to clean the stove top and microwave. 🙂

Here’s a great article on self-cleaning ovens and how they work: http://home.howstuffworks.com/self-cleaning-ovens.htm
In general, you’ll still have to do some work scraping and scrubbing. The more of the heavy build-up you get out before starting the cycle, the better. The self-clean function pretty much just turns food residue to ash by burning it at very high temperatures. After the self-clean cycle is done, you’ll have to clean all that ash out.
You’ll also still need to be careful of the fumes and smoke potentially produced when you use the self-clean cycle. My advice (from personal experience) is to run the self-cleaning cycle on a day when you can either open the windows of your house, or spend a few hours outside. Don’t start the cycle and leave the house since there’s always a fire danger, so you need to keep periodic tabs on things.
