During the month of April, I’m encouraging my readers to participate in a 30-Day House Cleaning Challenge (read more here, if you missed my announcement about this challenge last week). Every week day morning at 9 a.m., I’ll post the daily project and every evening around 6 p.m. EST, I’ll post an update and link-up.
How did your Day 2 Project go?
I have a confession to make: I only scrubbed one bathroom.
But my kids clean their bathroom every day, so I skipped that one and I plan to do our bathroom tonight (and I’ll show you pictures of my accomplishments there later this week). Excuses, excuses, I know.
Coffee + my cleaning = ready to go!
Here’s what I look like in the mornings before my workout and shower: Yoga pants and sweatshirt, headphones in, and — yup — no makeup or even so much as a brush run through my hair. Yikes! 🙂
Oh and in case you’re wondering about the signs on the door behind me in the picture above. The closet off the bathroom is Kathrynne’s “office”. It’s constantly changing as far as what sort of business it is, but it is currently a travel agency. 😉
Tackling the sink with my trusty Norwex cloth.
And then it was on to the toilet.
I broke out the Mr. Clean Eraser for some scuffs on the floor.
Speaking of Mr. Clean Erasers, did you know you can purchase them in bulk for much, much cheaper online? They aren’t Mr. Clean Erasers, but they are made with the same thing that the Erasers are made from. Just look for MELAMINE SPONGE CLEANING ERASER CLEANERs on eBay or Amazon. I just ordered a pack recently, thanks to this hot tip from Pinterest.

I always feel so happy when entering a clean bathroom…why don’t I do it more often? Thanks for the challenge. 🙂

Trying to catch up with the different challenges. I may be late to the party…but I’m getting it done!

I am SO glad my camera will not focus to take pictures of the rings in my tubs!

Just LOVE Norwex!!! norwex also makes a amagic eraser that is safer to use. The mr. Clean ones make me nervous with kiddos!
Kim in Cali says
Ha! I only scrubbed one bathroom too! But it is our dirtiest bathroom so that counts for something 🙂 At least I (we) did the challenge, right Crystal?
august says
Not all erasers are equal. For example, I can only use a Great Value brand for a fraction of the time and it doesn’t clean as well. Also, those things are only helpful, for me, on white surfaces. They leave streaks on EVERYTHNG!
Amy says
Ok, so I just finished doing day 2 on day 3. the 20 min. ended up being 60 min. with a 1 and 2 year old running around “trying to help” lol! I had a good time though. I’m going to now try to do day 3. Only one bedroom is in the cards for today! Thanks for the challenge, really enjoying it!
Krissy @ Just Take Two Bites says
Thankfully I had just cleaned up the bathroom, but boy did I have clutter everywhere! It looks much better now.
h says
So I did this challenge this morning; does that count? 🙂 I was able to clean my bathroom top to bottom in 15 minutes using my e-cloth microfiber. I quickly cleaning my mirror with my general purpose and polish cloth. I then in 5 minutes cleaning my sink and shower with the bathroom cloth and wiped down my toilet with it as well. Then I used my dry and wet mops from e-cloth to quickly clean my floors.
I appreciate this challenge as it is motivaitng me to use my new e-cloths for quick cleaning!

I am loving this challenge. I have a small apartment so a lot of things I do everyday, but I am looking forward to some things on the list that I forget about. I only have one bathroom so I got it done last night after the baby was asleep.
Also, I wanted to thank you for the Early to Rise challenge. My now 8.5 month old son just started sleeping through the night a month ago, (6:30-6:30) and I was so used to being in ‘Getting As Much Sleep As Possible’ mode, that I hadn’t realized I could wake up earlier than him!! Its been a lifesaver. I can prep dinner or get my hair/makeup done, or eat breakfast slowly, or get my workout in, or meal plan etc. I wake up at 5:30 every morning now and it does make a huge difference in my day and my general mood. My husband works 12 hour shifts at night and sleeps into the day so I can spend more one on one time with my son instead of having to be busy while he is awake.
I really love your website in general.
Kim M says
It had to wait until almost 10pm last night, but I got day 1 and day 2 done last night (chaotic monday!) Went thru my medicine cabinet and got rid of all the “old” or expired meds, and managed to pull of a freezer cooking session last night as well!
Martha @ Simply Cheaply says
I was proud of myself for getting the bathroom done today, not looking forward to the bedrooms tomorrow…
Carrie says
I was able to accomplish part of the challenge and cleaned 2 of my 4 bathrooms. I cleaned my bathroom and the bathroom that my five boys use mostly. I wanted to keep going but after a busy day at work and my regular household chores I had to take a break. I will try to get the other 2 done tonight. Thanks for the challenge, Crystal.
Brandice says
Well day 2 gor me only because I have a house full of 2 sick little boys who are puking everywhere, I ran the bath they got in and I started going to town on our upstairs bathroom, it looks a heck of a lot better than where it was(trash emptied, dirty clothes out, clutter put away, toilet soaking) but I didn’t get to scrub anything since they needed medicine and the whole nine yards before bedtime. I will carry over what was never finished on to day 3!!
Gretchen says
I am not blogging it yet, but I am participating! I love this challenge. I need it. Thank you!
Patty says
Thank you for the tip on the magic erasers! I’ve been meaning to get those but they aren’t really a “need”. I will order them ASAP! -patty
Chelsea says
Love the travel agency! Haha- my bathrooms weren’t too bad, but I’m glad I scrubbed them down anyway. 🙂
Theresa says
I had myself talked out of cleaning the upstairs bathroom, until my boys unexpectedly needed a bath! So I cleaned while they splashed in the tub.
I have been using this challenge as a purging guide also. Today I took care of the downstairs cupboards, drawers, and cabinets.
Thanks for the motivation!
Sheila Modine says
I’m 2 for 2 on the list. 🙂
You had said you were going to time yourself, so I decided to do the same. It took just under an hour to do 3 bathrooms.
My husband usually does two of them and my oldest does her own, but they have both been working lots of hours, so it hadn’t been done for a couple of weeks.
We’ve done surface wipe downs because we are renting, but the landlord is selling the house, so we have to be ready for showings.
I was so glad that I did such a thorough job today and really get in the nooks and crannies because they called and need to do a showing on Friday. Now I know the bathrooms are done and I can focus on making sure the rest of the house is tidy and ready for it.
BTW if you are wanting to rent houses, do it yourself. We rent through a property management company who hired out the pre-cleaning and painting before we moved in. It was not done well. The paint job is awful, I managed to get some of it off the cabinets today while I was scrubbing everything down. When we leave, the house will be cleaner than when we moved in. I know sometimes it can’t be helped, if you live far away from your house and need a management company to keep up with your house (which is the situation here), but if you can do it yourself, do it yourself.
Tina says
I used to use Mr. Clean Erasers (wonderful thing those!). But…I’ve discovered that rag and baking soda work just as well. Some of you may want to try it…I’ve even used this with crayon marks on my kitchen table—no scratches.
Abby @ Mother on a Mission says
One of our toilets has had a stain around the water line ever since we moved in a few months ago, and no amount of scrubbing has made a dent. I’d love tips on how I can get rid of it!
Also, has anyone tried the soap-dispensing scrub brush filled with Dawn and vinegar that seems to be all over Pinterest? Supposedly, it works great to clean the shower if you just do a quick clean with it everyday. I’d be interested to know if anyone has tried it and had good results.
Teresa says
You could try using a pumice stone to get rid of the stains. It worked on my toilets.
MC says
I’ve used the dish scrubber with vinegar and old shampoo that I didn’t want. It works pretty friggin well, but I have to do it a few times a week for it to stay clean. The wall in our shower (it’s a rental home, don’t judge 😉 ) is a BIG mirror, so I can see every little big of scum and hard water buildup. The brush works pretty well on that.
I don’t have a tip for the toilet, tho. I’d try the usual toilet bowl cleaner and just leave it longer. Maybe try it a couple of days in a row to see if you can break the scum down.
kate says
try lime-away and a lot of elbow grease on the toilet ring. i had a bad one when i moved in to my place too, and that finally got rid of it. even bleach wasn’t strong enough.
i am trying the Dawn/vinegar thing on my shower. due to the configuration of my bathroom and the sliding glass shower doors, i have to clean the shower while i’m in it and i don’t want to be naked in there with a bunch of chemicals. it seems to be working pretty well so far, although i can’t imagine doing it every day since it definitely adds 10 minutes to the legnth of my shower for a good scrubbing, which i don’t have in the morning. i’m shooting for every weekend.
i have to see if it’s up to the task this weekend. my shower drain has gotten clogged (my hair sheds like crazy!), so i have a bunch of soap scum build up in the tub since it’s not rinsing as cleanly. i have to see if the Dawn/vinegar is strong enough to tackle that once i get the drain unclogged.
Amber Taylor says
Have you tried ‘The Works” ? Its a toilet cleaner I found at Dollar General for about $3! Our toilet had stains on it that I was only able to get off with a pumice stone. It seriously seemed to melt off within seconds! I’d give that a try if you can find it. 🙂
Erika says
I second “The Works”. I found it at Walmart. At the time I was trying to get rid of hard water stains that showed up on my green toilet (it came with the house. I don’t recommend it!) It had the same active ingredient as the Lysol hard water remover but about three times as much. It got rid of gross stains that I had finally given up on ever getting off. It seems very toxic, but it worked. I had no luck with the acid I bought at Home Depot or the pumice stone.
cheryl says
You want to be careful about using anything too abrasive, if you take off the glaze in the toilet you will always have cleaning problems. That may even be the problem now. If not you can try Bar Keepers Friend. It is great for cleaning this type of stuff, I even use it on my glass top stove when you get burn rings around the burners, looks like new afterwards.
MomofTwoPreciousGirls says
The “office” is cute! My daughter calls my walk in closet her cave. She has been known to wake in the middle of the night and go in there to sleep. Then there was the time she was sleepwalking and went in their and used one her dads boots as a toilet!
Diana says
I only did one bathroom too! And it was while the kids were in the bathtub washing up!
Rachel says
About the Magic Erasers…if you want to spend next to nothing…mix baking soda and water into a paste. Put a dab on a damp cloth, scrub, and watch the stains disappear much faster than with a magic eraser. Ink, crayon, shoe scuffs, markers, I’ve gotten it all off using a paste of baking soda and water. When you’re done scrubbing (and it doesn’t take much elbow grease), just wipe with a different, damp cloth. I’ll never, never buy a magic eraser again, not even an off-brand one.
Erica @ Sort of Crunchy says
I’ll have to try this! I’m trying to use only “green” cleaning products so this is right up my alley!
lyss says
Oh, thank you for saying this. I’ve always wondered what those “magic” erasers were for! I was wondering if I should look into it, but I don’t think I’ll bother since I love using baking soda! And they obviously don’t last very long if people are wanting to buy them by the case. Microfiber cleaning cloths and baking soda will work for me! : )
sally smith says
Got yesterday’s done and then the kids who were at Grandma’s came home. Not to get off topic – but how do you stop people from buying the kids so much darned stuff. They got a ton of Easter stuff from school, had an egg hunt at the babysitter’s and community center, aunts/uncles/grandparents gave them overflowing baskets with toys, clothes, candy, money, etc. It is so ridiculous – the kids have no where to put all their new treasures. We ask people to cut back but they get upset and seem to get the kids more stuff the next year. I seriously do not know what to do with it all and how to get it to stop. It took me at least an hour just to empty the eggs for the 4 kids and that was just the stuff that could fit in an egg. I don’t want to seem ungrateful – but it causes so much stuff because we tell the kids to put away their things and they truly have no where to put it. They still have boxes of stuff from Xmas that is still sitting there.
Jenny says
Try the 1 in 1 out rule. So they received tons of stuff but then they should go through their old stuff and pick things to donate to others who are not as blessed as they are. Have them do this before Christmas and birthdays and any time they get random gifts and even when they buy stuff with their own money. One other tip I heard recently was to teach them to write and send a thank you note to the person before they are even able to open and play with a toy or wear clothes they’re given. It’s all about teaching them to love people and not things and to cultivate thankful hearts. =}
Brynn says
I don’t know, I struggle with that too. We did manage for a birthday to say we were saving to get her a swing-set for our new backyard and everyone was all about giving us money towards that which was a blessing. But for Christmas I find it a losing battle. My daughter has literally a room full of toys that I didn’t buy that she doesn’t play with. :o( ( I will be doing a purge to donate real soon.)
I also just wish for now they would just help us save for college. At two years old, there isnt much she likes besides her 3 favorite books, and boxes haha, or painting and coloring.
Ugh sorry to have a long reply and be of no help, but if anyone knows I would love to deal with this better!
ZTB says
You can try and donate or toss the candy. I do that with the majority of it. They get to gorge on it on the day and then I keep a few pieces, that’s it. Your friends and family mean well, but they’re not paying your dental bills when your kid’s teeth start getting cavities. That’s how I keep it in perspective. And any toys I don’t think they’ll appreciate fully gets donated to the local women’s battered shelter. I try t
Janine says
I just cleaned them all Sunday but I did de clutter 🙂
Denise says
thanks for the tip on magic erasers! I go through a lot of them since they are my favorite way to clean my tub. It gets really gross since my husband is a mechanic. Between his grime and soap scum magic erasers are my favorite!
I just cleaned the tub over the weekend so it still looks pretty but my goal is to try to do it once a week instead of once a month!
Karen @MSEnthusiast says
I am SO needing this motivation. Can’t wait!
Sarah says
My bathrooms were cleaned by my wonderful mother who asked to come over and help me today! Such a huge help. I was able to get some freezer cooking done while she did that for me. And she did a few more things in the bathroom than I was planning to do, so she has eased my burden for a few of the other bathroom cleaning days coming up. I love my Mom!
And I showed her the April Cleaning Challenge, so I think she may join us. She was very excited about the cleaning list.
Shelly says
I am going to have to check into the Norwex cloth. I would love to be able to clean without using any cleaners. I tried a new toilet bowl cleaner today that I found on Pinterest and it worked really quite well. Just vinegar, baking soda and tea tree oil.
Melissa Gibson says
Much better today! I LOVE DOORS!
I haven’t bought Magic Erasers in bulk yet, but I do pick up a few boxes of two from the Dollar Tree when they have them. Found some at Big Lots for $1.98 for four – that’s two centers cheaper than the dollar store! 🙂
Sara@Save Money, Live Joyfully says
Today was a pretty discouraging cleaning day. I feel like it’s a full time job just keeping my kitchen clean! I woke up early and showered before I even got downstairs (huge accomplishment!), but I’ve literally been cleaning ever since then, with nothing to show for it. Haven’t had a chance to sit down or even eat yet. This is an open call to tried and true tips in efficiency!!
Our day was actually pretty standard cleaning wise–by the time I got the baby fed, I made breakfast for the 4 year old, while she ate I unloaded and reloaded the dishwasher, then it was time to clean breakfast dishes. In between, I started a load of laundry, put dinner in the crock pot, and made a few business phone calls. By then both kids were clamoring for lunch, so I made lunch, cleaned the dishes while they ate, then it was time to clean up after lunch, clearing the table, picking up errant crumbs, etc. I keep starting on little projects, but the little people keep needing things. Meanwhile, the baby has learned that removing his medical equipment will result in incessant beeping and a Mommy who stops everything she’s doing to reattach it…he’s too smart for his own good 🙂 but it means I get about 45 seconds at a time of “focus” time before he needs attention.
So, long story short, my bathrooms are still dirty, but my kitchen is clean 🙂 I’m open to any tips. My mom was an excellent cleaner, but she never taught me her secrets!
Lori says
It sounds like you’re doing great! When my kids were little, I figured the day was a success if I got a shower and everyone got fed. Give yourself grace while you have such little ones, especially one with medical issues. Prioritize what you absolutely must do and everything else can wait.
Diana says
Sara your day sounds like mine! I am pregnant with our third and am still in that first trimester exhaustion stage. Our littlest one is 16 months and is at that stage where she finds whatever she can and hauls it all over the house…shoes, duplos, books, toys, socks…by nap time this place is a WRECK. I also spend most of my days cleaning up the kitchen and picking up all the stuff the baby has displaced…BUT I did manage to clean one bathroom WHILE the kids were taking their bath tonight. 😉 Gotta sneak it in where you can. Now I’m going to relax and fold laundry and let the other bathroom wait till I have energy again.
Hang in there! You may feel like you aren’t getting traction but you are doing a TON.
Theresa says
Sara you are doing GREAT!
I have 21 month-old twins. I felt like a hamster, always spinning and getting nowhere for about 18 of those months. The only thing that changed is my mindset. My husband prodded me to change my expectations, and it has made a huge difference!
Your babies are only babies for a short time, and I guarantee they will remember the love they received more than a clean house. You ARE doing a WONDERFUL job!
Sara@Save Money, Live Joyfully says
Thank you so much for the encouragement, Lori, Diana and Theresa! I woke up this morning with new energy. My husband said the house looked really good, and while it’s not the spotless house I grew up in, it’s definitely looking better since I’ve started this challenge 🙂
Diane says
The first year I just fed my baby and had something made for supper even if it was leftovers. Extra cleaning can wait. Feed your kids and everything else is details/extras.
Dianna says
I’m in love with magic erasers. I used one on my stainless steel sink today and it shined it right up.
Thanks for the great tip on getting them cheaper.
Leah @ Sanity Saving Mom says
As I stated in my blog post, I not only cleaned and organized it, but I also let my 5 year old soak and play in the tub while I did so. Multi-tasking A+….. I almost went as far as to pull the blinds down and soak them and then I thought I’d better not.
Julie says
While the older children were sprucing up the living room this afternoon, I grabbed the 3 and 5 year olds and we tackled the bathroom. We got everything done, except the shower, in about 15 minutes. They were excited to help! We only have one bathroom so that makes it easier!
Marie says
I was able to tackle the powder room and half of the master bath. But it was a crazy day. I had to get my daughter’s feet measured and found out she grew two sizes! Woops! So that prioritized pulling out the bin of shoes to see what I had for the new sizes. Then when I picked up my twins it was time for their feet to, which wasn’t so bad. But it required trying on shoes from my “magic” closet. (aka- store pile of next size clothing/shoes bought for under $5) Once we got through all the shoes it was time to cut off tags and switch out the new for the old.
I’m planning to tackle the other bathroom and rest of master bath tonight. But as a bonus I did get to wash the floor under the fish tank which collects dust bunnies!
Amy Lauren says
Thanks for the tip on the Mr. Clean erasers, may have to order those! They are so pricey in stores.
Rae says
Do they work better than the Magic Eraser knock offs that you can get at Dollar Tree? I have used those knockoffs and they fell apart the very first (non-scrubbing) use. I got real ones off of Amazon for a pretty good deal before but would love to try these if they work as well.
Laura at TenThingsFarm says
I haven’t blogged about it, but I’ve been following along so far (I know, 2 days, hee hee). I actually have a cleaning list I follow, but my husband’s schedule was changed and I need to adjust accordingly. What I really need to do is some more intense stuff – a drawer a day, that sort of thing. I didn’t really find things in either bathroom to get rid of, but I did realize that Daughter’s hand towels are pretty shot, so whenever I can replace those I will turn her old ones into dusting cloths or something. 🙂
Crystal says
We’ve got some closets coming up soon. So hang tight… 🙂
Erin says
I have some old medicines to get rid of after today’s cleaning. Most is over the counter stuff that expired, but some is prescription only painkillers left over from my csection. Has anyone ever safely disposed of medicines like that?
Lana says
You can call your local police station and they can tell you about disposal of those drugs. Our local sheriff’s dept does drop off days when they encourage the community to clean out and dispose of them.
Kim M says
your local pharmacy may have a “take-back” program where you can bring your old prescriptions to be disposed of correctly. My CVS has it going on saturdays, might be worth checking into!
Charlene @ A Virtuous Woman says
I’ve read before to flush old medicine down the toilet.
Diane says
Our pharmacist told us not to flush medications as they can get into the water supply.
Diane says
You can return it to a pharmacy (some have designated take-back days and will dispose of them). Otherwise, crush them and mix them with used coffee grounds or kitty litter and put them in the trash.
Diane says
Our local pharmacy will take back expired prescription drugs and dispose of them safely.
Jessica says
You can take them to your pharmacy. They will be able to dispose of them safely.
Sarah says
You should not send down the toilet as it puts it in the water tables. If you can not wait until a take back put them in a plastic ziplock type bag with some cat litter and liquid. It makes them so you can throw out with your garbage. there is going to be a takeback on April 27. If you go to this link you can search for a local spot to return your old meds too.
http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/
Karen says
I went to the pharmacy today just to do that. They cannot take back but she suggested putting meds in cat litter and pouring something caustic over it.
Kara says
Thanks for the HOT TIP on the Magic Erasers! My jaw dropped when I saw the price on the bulk amount! I NEED THESE!!! 🙂
Crystal says
🙂 Split an order with a friend or two and it becomes an amazing deal!
Jessica @Proverbslady.com says
Last night when I went to sleep I was really hoping it would not be the bathrooms today and yet for some reason I knew it would be. Probably because my bathroom really needed it. It’s horrible that my kids keep up with their bathroom chores but for some reason I forget about mine. 🙂 Well today I got them done and I am actually grateful. The only thing I have a really hard time cleaning is my plexi-glass shower door! Anyone have any suggestions???
Crystal says
Good for you!
Lana says
For the shower door you should definitely try a microfiber cloth. It will take off the soap scum easily and it is so quick. I love microfiber for everything!
Amy says
I use a cloth with baking soda to clean my shower doors. It works great!
WilliamB says
Replace it with a shower curtain? (Joking, I promise!)
Jessica @Proverbslady.com says
Believe me I have considered!
Joy says
Wet dryer sheets work great on shower doors. Just rinse afterwards.
April says
Not sure about getting them clean, but I saw on Pinterest to use Rain-X to keep them clean. Hope that helps!
Heather F. says
LOVE my Norwex cloths! No need for cleaners! Makes cleaning so much “healthier” and quicker!
Crystal says
You don’t actually have to use any kind of cleaner but water with Norwex — which is one of the reasons I like it. You can use cleaner if you like, but the cloth works well without it.
Bethany in AZ says
Abby, I use the vinegar/Dawn recipe and LOVE the way it cleans my shower, tub, and sink. I even tried it with Walmart’s version of Dawn and it still works. Of course, plain vinegar also works well but the dish soap mixed with it eliminates the vinegar ‘fumes’ and makes it easy to see where I’ve scrubbed and whether I missed any spots.
Bethany in AZ says
Abby,
Oops…forgot to add that I had the same issue with our toilets and finally gave in and used a pumice stone to remove the hard water stains. That takes them out, but be aware that it does alter the surface of the bowl, which makes it prone to accumulate more mineral deposits in the future unless you prevent them from forming again. I’ve had success by using the Clorox bleach tabs in the tank and have not had any additional stains, but I realize that some people would prefer not to use those. Just an idea.
Kristen says
Thanks for another challenge! I only did the master as my house has 4 bathrooms, so far so good in keeping up!
Lana says
I just got the fruit and veggie cloth and I love being able to take the wax off of my apples and cucumbers!
Emily says
Lana, can you elaborate on this fruit and veggie cloth? I HATE the wax that they put on cucumbers, so I generally peel them, but that means we’re missing out on the nutrients in the skin. I’d love to hear more about a cloth that removes this wax.
Lana says
It is a Norwex cloth. I just wet it and rub the fruit or veggie with it and the wax is easily removed. If you Google it there are Youtube videos about this cloth. I have not had it for long but you can scrub carrots with it and not have to peel them and other uses. Our apples taste so much better without the wax!
Emily says
Thanks Lana. I’ll check it out. I buy organic apples and cucumbers, but being able to get off the wax, especially from the cucumbers, and the pesticides approved for organic produce would be great.
Kim in Cali says
how much do the norwex cloths cost?
Nicole says
How do you use the norwex? Are you concerned about germs spreading? Thanks!
Jessica says
Another tip on the magic erasers- Co-ops! I am getting 100 magic erasers for a grand total of $10.60 plus shipping. And that includes the paypal fees & everything. Figuring on about $4 for shipping that puts them in the neighborhood of 15 cents each, and the more you order the more the price drops.
Crystal says
Great tip!
sona says
I have tried to use them on vinyl floors, stove and formica counters and they take the shine (finish) right off. So not sure what to use them on.
Nicole @ Amazing Frugal Mom says
Thanks for the Magic Eraser tip! I’ll definitely look into that.
Diane says
My husband just cleaned our bathroom so I began de-cluttering it today. I still have more to work on, though.
