During the month of April, I’m encouraging my readers to participate in a 30-Day House Cleaning Challenge (read more here, if you missed my announcement about this challenge last week). Every week day morning at 9 a.m., I’ll post the daily project and every evening around 6 p.m. EST, I’ll post an update and link-up.
How did your Project #10 go?
I was pretty excited because I woke up to a clean living room — and it didn’t even know that was on the project list for today!
Apparently, someone’s been painting in the living room. 🙂
Cleaning the living room took all of 15 minutes — and I even dusted and cleaned under the couches. I almost felt bad it was so easy, so I went and tackled the suitcase that was half unpacked in my bedroom from the trip I came home from three days ago. Because I’m all organized like that. 😉

I feel like I’ve vacuumed more in the last week than I have in the last 6 months. Love the just-vacuumed look though!
Your living room looks wonderful and very cozy – and I agree with previous comments…those pillows are beautiful!

I was looking ahead on the list, and had plans for Day #10 to tackle something that had been on my to-do list for a long time, prep the living room for painting (which involved removing a wallpaper border). My plan was baby steps only. I didn’t care if this project took me all week! I plugged along and the first coat is on!
Thank you so much for this challenge, and the motivation that has followed!
Crystal says
Yay! I’m excited for you!
Cristina says
It was easy, so very easy.
I´m realling seing results. And since I´de already vacuumed all the house on day 8, is was a 10 minute thing 😉

Cute couches, I must say! They look deep, soft, kid-friendly . . . May I ask where you bought them? 😀
Crystal says
We bought them off of Craigslist. Seriously. Probably our best Craigslist find ever. 🙂

I like your living room couch pillows! I love mixing patterns!

I had every intention of cleaning my living room, but didn’t get around to it. We are having a problem with our well water that was requiring my attention. I had to assist my hubby as he tried to figure out a solution to get us clean water again. Tomorrow, I will have lots of cleaning as our company will be coming tomorrow. I did get to clean my bedroom which mostly only needed dusting and vacuuming . So, it wasn’t a total waste & I’m hoping our water problem is fixed!

My living room was in need of a good deep cleaning. I vacuumed under my couch and in between the cushions. I am happy to say that my living room is clean!!!!
Sunny says
Crystal,
Side note– I LOVE your pillows!! I know you are very frugal, so I was curious if you made them, or got a good deal?
Thanks!
Amy R says
Pillows can be made so cheaply! The way I do it is I find a fabric I love for the front. It can be pricey because you don’t need very much. Hobby Lobby ALWAYS has a 40% coupon. I buy an inexpensive coordinating fabric for the backs (sometimes even just a remnant). I stuff them with pillow I find at garage sales or thrift stores. It’s an easy way to make a big impact in any room.

Very easy day! Like your living room, mine was already clean from previous days. I think it only took me 10 minutes to complete today’s task!
Shelly says
My living room started out with lots of stuff from our homeschooling. I had some marks on the walls to remove, sticker residue on the window sill and then I removed some of the art from the wall. Oh my goodness the dust was thick on the wall and the backside of the picture. After about an hour of cleaning everything was in its place and the room was nice and clean.
Alicia says
I didn’t really do the others because I had very recently done most of the other projects right before the came up. That was quite satisfying! But today, I did the challenge because my living room needed it. And since it said deep clean, I made sure I did the following:
– dust shelves, put away clutter
– sweep underneath bookshelves and buffet, and on hearth. I had noticed these quite dusty lately!
– move couch and vacuum underneath, this had not been done in a year, probably
I also mopped the hardwood with the homemade spray cleaner that I love, and got in all those spots I swept underneath furniture.
It looks good and it’s great knowing it’s clean even where you can’t see. Our kids play in this room and the family room downstairs, so it is messy DAILY, thanks largely to my busy 2yo.
Alicia says
And, I want to add, I’ve been working harder to tidy my kid’s rooms, with their help, most days. It makes the job so much faster, obviously, to keep up with it. I hope these things will become new habits.
Kelly says
What do you put in your homemade spray cleaner?
Alicia says
I fill a spray bottle with 1/4 parts white vinegar, 3/4 parts water (sometimes it might be 1/3 to 2/3) and a squeeze of a concentrated cleaner that has lasted for years (Shaklee’s Basic H concentrate). You could alternatively do a small squeeze of dishsoap. I find it so much more manageable to use this and do a quick mop job, rather than an every 6mo bucket mop…which I just never seemed to get to! I use this on our kitchen linoleum and our hardwood.

I was feeling discouraged this morning like I just couldn’t accomplish things. It was taking me forever to make Turkey bites when it should of taken 20minutes max but I had sooo many interruptions from my sweet toddler.
But at nap time I kicked it into gear and finished the bites, cleaned the laundry room, which means swept, moped and even wiped down the machines (not sure when I did that last) swept and moped the kitchen. ( I didn’t get on my hands and knees but used my wet vac by Swiffer) Vacuumed the living room, stairs, hallway, and the 4 bedrooms!!!! I was on a roll. Then I unpacked our duffle bag from a getaway on Friday!!!
I feel better now and can’t believe how much got done!!
Amy R says
Thank heavens for nap time!!! I have days that I wouldn’t even be able to get a shower in if it weren’t for that blessed time in the afternoon! My 2 year old gets up the second my feet hit the floor. It is impossible to get up before him!
Hannah T says
I just want to say that I can totally relate. I am a parent of a very active and attention-seeking 2 year old myself, and that makes it a challenge to A) get anything done, or B) stay clean for more than 10 minutes! Keep up the good work!

Today was such an easy day! After cleaning and straightening the living room last week, we’ve all made an effort to pick up behind ourselves. I’m finding this cleaning thing to be so addicting! My husband is usually the cleanie and I’m the messie, but he had begun remarking that he needs to work on his areas–they are starting to look messy next to the cleanliness that is starting to pervade ( or invade?) the atmosphere!
Sarah says
I worked ahead yesterday on dusting the living room since I knew today would be a long day with work. The only thing that I wanted to do that didn’t get done was to vacuum/dust the fan blades and steam the floor. Hopefully I’ll be able to fit that in with tomorrow’s tasks.
Angie@ Creating Our Home says
I am LOVING this challenge. I have done more to my house in the last ten days than I have in a very long time. But-I don’t feel like I have cleaned much at all! Doing a little each day is working great for me!
Crystal says
Woohoo! That makes me so happy!
Blythe @ The Bungalow Brood says
My living room was pretty clean too…it didn’t take too long to dust and vacuum the edges, so I was able to fit in a craft project too!
Crystal says
Good for you!
Katie says
I love the pillows on your couch!! I woke up to a clean living room too, so I cleaned out one of our closets. It was a great day! This Spring cleaning is kind of addicting!
Crystal says
So glad you’re finding it addicting… I’m taking that that’s a good thing. 🙂
And I love the pillows, too. It’s amazing the difference a few pillows can make to a room!
Katie says
Yes– addicting in a very good habit-forming way! 🙂 My husband is liking it a lot too so that is a huge bonus! 🙂
Victoria says
Hopefully this will make people feel good but the suitcase I used for BEECH is still sitting empty in the hallway waiting for me to drag it up to the attic. Yeah, that was in late January.
