When I first started blogging 12 years ago, social media wasn’t even a thing. Can you believe that??
I remember when Pages first came out on Facebook, and Jesse encouraged me to set one up for my blog. I was skeptical at first of using that platform, because I didn’t really know other bloggers using it and it seemed weird… and I didn’t think it would even work.
But I’m so glad that I listened to Jesse, because Facebook has been our largest referral source for years and years. In addition to Facebook, over the years, we have added in Pinterest, Instagram, and Twitter.
I’m so glad that social media is in existence because it’s one of the best ways to grow your blog, your income, and your online presence. So many people ask me how to be successful on social media and I wanted to share a few of my top tips:
1. Start Slowly
Start with the most obvious social media first. Once you feel like you’ve gotten a good handle on that, you can then add something else. Whatever you go, don’t try to learn and post on all of them at once. That’s a recipe for instant overwhelm!
(I DO recommend setting up profiles from the get-go so that you go ahead and get your names held on each of the social media platforms for if and when you decide to use them. I didn’t do this on a few of the social media platforms with MoneySavingMom.com and I’ve forever regretted it when someone else snatched up my name before I did!)
2. Go Where Your Ideal Audience Hangs Out
When it comes to choosing the best social media account for your business, go where your ideal audience hangs out. For example, if you are a fashion blogger, then Instagram may be your best starting point. If you’re a food blogger, then start on Pinterest. If you write heartfelt pieces, maybe consider starting on Facebook.
Take a look at other bloggers in your niche’ and see where they are focusing the majority of their energy. See what type of engagement they are receiving on their posts to get an idea of what is working where.
3. Track What’s Working
Figure out how much time you have to dedicate to promoting on social media and then focus your effort on where you’re going to see the most return on your investment of time.
For instance, Facebook Live and Instagram Stories have been working incredibly well for us right now. We’re getting a lot of engagement on our videos and it’s resulting in lots of click-throughs and sign-ups and sales when I use it to promote a product or a post or some sort of lead magnet. So I’m dedicating more time to it and less time to other forms of social media since we’re seeing such great results.
