I’ve got a lot of experience with recycling crayons. In my experience, it works best to use Crayola brand, as the off brands do not seem to melt right. Like the kind you get at the restaurant… they just don’t melt properly and when they solidify, they do not color well. Also, I found that it is better to coordinate colors (shades of orange, or orange with red or orange with yellow, etc) rather than have every color in the rainbow in your recycled crayon.
Finally, she does not mention it on her blog, but don’t reuse your cookie cutters or silicone molds for making food after you make crayons in them. They take on the smell of crayon…

I’ve made my own recycled crayons in a muffin tin before. I’d love to find one with fun shapes, but I’ve never seen one (except on Amazon)! Maybe I’m just looking in the wrong places?

For the soap crayons, I would suggest getting the color made for soap making. I’ve never had any problems with it staining the kids or the tub. Also, I wonder if silicone trays would work for the crayons…lot of options for shapes.
