Life was more than a little busy this week with me finishing up the final edits for my book, Jesse prepping for a big case, two of my children being sick, and all of us preparing for the big bridal shower we’re hosting this evening. So other than buying things for the bridal shower tonight, I didn’t buy any groceries and we just ate from the freezer and pantry.

We did get some great deals at Office Max, though.

And we bought a bunch of strawberries to make chocolate dipped strawberries for the bridal shower. They were $0.88 at Aldi this week, so we price-matched at Walmart and got 10 packages!

We also got two fun freebies in the mail yesterday: the free sample box of Honey Nut Cheerios and the free Pantene Shampoo or Conditioner coupon.

I had a 2.5-hour time block today to run errands and do my grocery shopping. Jesse was working on things with the children, so I went by myself. And somehow, in that 2.5 hour time block, I made it to six different stores!

One of my errands was to go to the party store to buy things for a big bridal shower I’m hosting at our house this next week. They had everything I was looking for and almost all of it was on sale! I also stopped at Walgreens but they were completely out of everything I’d hoped to buy (no surprise since it’s Saturday, but I still decided to stop since it was right on my way!).

Here were the groceries I ended up getting at the four other stores I went to:

Dillon’s Shopping Trip

2 heads of lettuce marked down to $0.75 each

2 bags of croutons — $1.99, used 2 $0.55/1 coupons that “doubled” to $1/1 = $1 per bag (not the best price for these, but I’d signed up to bring them to a get together tomorrow so I went ahead and bought them since I knew I didn’t have time to make homemade croutons between now and then.)

Total: $3.81 with tax

Dollar Tree Shopping Trip

3 packages of Nature’s Own Hamburger Buns — $1 each

Sea Salt — $1

Total: $4.29 with tax

Aldi Shopping Trip

2 bags of shredded cheddar cheese — $2.99 each

Baking soda — $0.49

Straws — $0.99

Carrots — $0.99

Colored pepper pack — $1.79

2 packages of sweet corn — $0.99 each

4 packages of tomatoes on the vine — $0.99 each

Total: $17.36 with tax

Health Food Store Shopping Trip

10 cartons of Almond and Rice Milk for $0.99 each

2 organic Toaster Pastries at $0.99 each

6 mangoes at $0.33 each

4 lbs. of peaches at $0.79 per lb.

6.3 lbs. of marked down bananas at $0.39 lb.

Blueberry yogurt marked down to $0.99 each

Brown cow yogurt marked down to $1.99

Total: $24.11 with tax

I didn’t go shopping this week. Instead, we took a family road trip to Oklahoma City and Tulsa. We had a specific budget we’d set ahead of time for our trip and we had fun creatively sticking with it — while enjoying some fun and memorable experiences, too.

(I think my driving “skills” freaked the guy out who was manning the segway booth. He would not let go of it for the life of him!)

We had some fun firsts on the trip. We rode segways, fed turtles and touched a shrimp, sea cucumber, shark, starfish and sting ray.

Feeding turtles

And there were some not so fun firsts. Like our first time of being straight in the path of a tornado and thinking we were going to experience a direct hit.

We hid out in the hotel’s storm shelter and guess who was there with us? The executive producer for Discovery Channel’s Storm Chasers show.

Needless to say, the fact that he and his team believed we were also going to sustain a direct hit was not too comforting! Eight minutes before the tornado reached us, it changed directions and then petered out. We all breathed a huge collective sigh of relief, but were so sad for the many others who were in the path of the storm. :(

Next week, I’ll be sharing posts on how to pay cash for a vacation, how to get a great deal on a hotel and how to stay organized and save when traveling with young children — along with more pictures from our trip. Stay tuned!

I’m late in getting this up today because I spent this morning at a knitting class and this afternoon hanging out with my friend, Carolynn, from My Little Bit of Life. At any rate, here’s a rundown on my grocery shopping purchases this week…

I stopped at Walmart last night to get some Ivory soap for the homemade laundry detergent I’m making (I’ll be sharing the recipe and full details on how it goes on Wednesday). Of course, I have been unable to find a $1/1 Ivory soap coupon from my usual coupon sources, so I decided to use overage to my advantage.

Here’s what I got:

1 can Similac formula — $4.17, used $5/1 coupon, free plus overage

1 Nivea Bodywash — $3, used $3/1 coupon, free after coupon

1 3-pack of Ivory soap — $0.97

My total was $0.73 after the coupons plus tax.

We won’t use the formula, but I went ahead and bought it to donate since I had the coupon and it gave me overage toward the soap purchase.

I did the rest of my shopping on Tuesday:

I spent $41.97 at Aldi — see a full list of what we bought and the prices here.

I spent a little over $7 at Dollar Tree.

And I spent $7.11 at Dillon’s — see a full list of what we bought and the coupon match-ups here.

My book manuscript is almost done (yay!), so I’m enjoying jumping back into using coupons again after taking a break for a few weeks to focus on writing. I’ve missed it!

Here’s what I bought this week:

Target Shopping Trip: Spent $6.47, saved $14.29 — see the full list of what I bought and coupons I used here.

Dillon’s Shopping Trip: Spend $7.89, saved $22.95 — see the full list of what I bought and coupons I used here.

Walgreens Shopping Trip: Spent $0.49 — see the full list of what I bought and coupons I used here.

I also bought three dozen farm-fresh eggs from my brother. We’ve been going through so many eggs recently and I’m thankful to have a source for such high-quality, delicious eggs.

I still need to go to Aldi to pick up some fruit and vegetables since we’re almost out and they have $0.99 strawberries and pineapple again this week!

It was a busy week around here with the garage sale, family in from out of town and — of course! — working on finishing up the book manuscript.

The garage sale ended up being our best sale we’ve ever had; the traffic was amazing! I’m not sure what to attribute it to. We usually have great sales, but this was fantastic. We are blessed to have a good location, the weather was great and we had a lot of great stuff to sell between the six families who contributed stuff. We also followed all the tips I shared last year for having a successful garage sale.

Truth be told, I only probably spent half a day all combined helping to run the sale, since everyone else pitched in, too. (One of the blessings of having a multi-family sale is that there are lots of hands to help out!) I’m so thrilled to have the clutter cleaned out of my house and love the motivation a garage sale always gives me to clear it out!

In book news, God brought an incredible literary agent to me last week (it’s a long story how that all came to be!). Sarah was willing to take me on as her client this late in the game and it’s been a huge blessing to me. She has years of professional editing experience with large publishing houses and she’s been helping me revamp my manuscript to make it ten times better than I could have made it on my own.

I’m beyond grateful to her and all the hours she’s putting in to make this manuscript the best that it can be before I turn it into the publisher. I’m learning so much through the process and am indebted to her help. By the way, if anyone needs a good literary agent, I’d be glad to hook you up! :)

As far as grocery shopping, we bought lots of fruit at Aldi and bread at Dollar Tree and that was it. We’re continuing to eat up our extras from the freezer and pantry and stick with simple meals. So far, it’s working well!

Other than shopping at Dollar Tree this week for bread, I didn’t do any other shopping.

Jesse stopped by the store to pick up milk, chocolate milk, three bunches of bananas and cereal. Plus, we bought three dozen farm-fresh eggs from my brother.

But that was it for our shopping this week. What about you?

So, I wasn’t as disciplined as I’d hope to be this past week (am I ever, though?!), but I at least didn’t stay up until 2 a.m. any night — except for a few nights when I was up with Silas who has been having these middle-of-the-night coughing fits (Anyone have a great middle-of-the-night coughing remedy? I’m ready to try anything you want to suggest since we’d all love to be getting more sleep around here!)

And I actually did get pictures of my groceries this week, unlike last week! So I guess that means I had a more on-the-ball week, too, though I still have a laundry pile in my room (I promise it’s not the same one as last week, though!) :)

Health Food Store Shopping Trip: Spent $9.09 — see a complete price breakdown here.

Dillon’s Shopping Trip: Spent $23.99 — see a complete price breakdown here.

Walmart Shopping Trip: Spent $4.19 — see a complete price breakdown here.
