Super Savings Saturday

I didn’t do a lot of grocery shopping or couponing the first three weeks in March because I somehow ended up with three trips scheduled those first three and a half weeks. {I enjoy traveling, on occasion, and I love the opportunity to get to speak and meet some of you, but I’ve decided that three trips in three weeks is definitely not something I want to make a habit of! I much prefer quiet days at home with my family! :) }

However, I think I made up for my lack of grocery shopping and couponing this week. Here are the groceries we purchased:

My husband’s shopping trip at Dillon’s that ended up being pretty “screwed up” thanks to both of us miscalculating and misreading ads – Spent $34.97 — Read the full details and price breakdowns here.

Health food store shopping trip — 7 pounds of fruit for $0.99/lb.

Target shopping trip — Spent $38.01 (most of that wasn’t grocery money, though, since the games came out of our household envelope and the girls paid for the Hello Kitty house) — See the full details and price breakdowns here.

Dillon’s shopping trip #2 — Spent $1.26 — Read the full details and price breakdowns here.

Walmart shopping trip — Spent $1.17 — Read the full details and price breakdowns here.

Dillon’s shopping trip #2 — Spent $5.16 — Read the full details and price breakdowns here.

Aldi shopping trip — Spent $15.19 — Read the full details and price breakdowns here.

Didn’t You Waste a Lot of Time and Gas Making All Of Those Trips?

I’m sure that some of you are wondering why I made all these little shopping trips and thinking that I could have saved myself a lot of trouble, time, and gas money if I would have just gone to one store.

Well, yes, I definitely did do more shopping trips than I usually do this week. However, all of the stores were either on my way to somewhere else I was headed or they are really close to my house. I also had extra time this week since we didn’t have that much planned outside of the usual homeschooling and household life.

And finally, it was so nice to be able to just have fun shopping and getting bargains again, after taking a few weeks “off” from it. Yes, I know, I’m crazy that I consider grocery shopping a leisurely activity! :)

I stopped by Dillon’s, Target, Health Food store, and Walgreens this past week:

I spent $2.02 at Target. See the complete details on my shopping trip here.

I spent $8.79 at the health food store. See the full list of purchases here.

I spent $22.53 at Dillon’s. See the full details on my purchases here.

And I spent $0.22 at Walgreens.

We also swung by the local supermarket in Santo Domingo while we were in the Dominican Republic this past week. I’ll blog more about our adventures there later, but let’s just say my jaw was on the floor about how inexpensive some of the prices were.

I bought a lot of vanilla, almond extract, and coffee. Plus, a little stovetop coffee brewer that our guide convinced us was the best way to make coffee the Dominican way. We’re excited to try it and see if our coffee turns out as well as the coffee we drank there!

Here were the groceries we bought this week:

We spent $21.76 to buy the above groceries at the health food store and Aldi. See the full price breakdown here.

Then, we stopped by a new health food store in town (Natural Grocers) on our date night to check it out. I wasn’t impressed with the prices, but we did get a free bag of almonds thanks to a coupon a kind friend had shared with us that she wasn’t going to use.

We also bought three dozen eggs from my brother for $6.

And last, but not at all least, we stopped by Braum’s today to get a half gallon of ice cream and cones as a special treat for those in our family who can have dairy. (I made a fantastic non-dairy dessert with coconut whipped “cream” for the non-dairy eater–I’ll share the non-dairy whipped cream recipe next week. It’s a keeper!)

I went to Dillon’s earlier this week and bought all of the above for $10.40. See the full details and coupon match-ups here.

And then Jesse took the leftover grocery cash for January and did a big produce stock-up.

This week, I got back in the saddle a little bit when it comes to grocery shopping–and it felt good to be using coupons and shopping at more than one store again! It was nice to take a break for Christmas and the book launch, but I’ve missed it!

Here’s what we bought:

Target: Spent $14.79 — see the full price breakdown and coupon deals here.

Aldi (didn’t get a picture–sorry!): Tortillas — $0.99, Cheese blocks (8-oz) — $1.99 each, Artisan Lettuce — $1.99, Grape tomatoes — $0.89, Butter — $2.29, 2 gallons of milk — $2.88 each, Bananas — $1.35, Cauliflower — $1.69, Bag of apples — $2.99 = Total: $24.06

I also bought three dozen farm-fresh eggs from my brother for $6.

Total spent on groceries this week: $44.85

I didn’t do that much shopping this week, but I got some great deals:

I got 18 pounds of apples for $3.54 total!

And spent $10.21 at Target.

I also spent $15.18 at Walmart.

And cooked and pureed five pumpkins.

I also got 2.5 dozen eggs from my family’s chickens and bought this 24-pack of Clif bars and some coffee beans using Swagbucks gift cards.

Some friends were heading to the bulk foods stores and graciously picked up 25 pounds of wheat for me while they were there. I’m so thankful to have wheat to grind again. I bought one bag of whole-wheat flour recently and we noticed that none of our baked goods tasted as good with it. Freshly-ground whole-wheat flour just can’t be beat!

The wheat was a little over $19 for 25 pounds. It’s less expensive from Azure Standard, but they were all out of wheat when the truck came last month. I’m planning to order a 50-pound bag from Azure soon. In the mean time, I’m just happy to have wheat to grind again!

My mom also gave me some Lundberg Brown Rice that she got clearanced and we bought some basics at Aldi again this week: bread, peanut butter, fruit, vegetables, and cheese. Plus, we also bought some farm-fresh eggs from my brother.

So, I’m pretty much in love with Azure Standard. I’d heard about it for a long time from my friend, Laura from Heavenly Homemakers. However, I’m a little chicken when it comes to trying new things–especially things that require forking out a monetary investment.

However, my local friend, Angie, researched out how it all works and what the best deals were, and she held my hand through the whole process. She even let me order with her so that I didn’t have to worry about the $50 minimum (though I actually ending up ordering a little over $50 when it was all said and done). And then we split the 20-pound box of apples.

I am so glad I took the plunge to try something new. Not only was it really quite simple and uncomplicated to order and pick up our order from the delivery truck, but I am so happy with what I ended up buying.

Azure Standard Order

5 lbs. of organic Azure Farm popcorn — $4.95

1 gallon bulk raw clover honey — $30.40

10 pounds organic Akane apples — $9.50

10 pounds organic rolled oats — $4.90 each

I also stopped at the health food store today and bought some organic bananas that were marked down to $0.39 per pound and some eggs that were marked down to $0.99 per dozen.

Earlier this week, Jesse stopped by Dillon’s and Aldi for me and bought lettuce, cilantro, cheese, honey, flour, milk, peanut butter, chocolate chips, tortillas, black beans, and lemons/limes. In the hubbub of preparing for the garage sale, I didn’t get a picture taken. He spent a little over $22 total.
