Lidl
So after I went to Aldi, I stopped by the brand-new Lidl that was just opened down the street from Aldi. I didn’t actually *need* anything, but I spent quite a while shopping and price-comparing. I’ve got to say – I was pleasantly surprised! This European-based discount grocery store has a lot to offer, and the prices are mostly comparable to Aldi. It is bigger than Aldi – so more selections – and it has an app that you can download and clip coupons! I went ahead and picked up a few things since I was there, and I will definitely be going back in the future. 🙂 Do any of you shop at Lidl?
2 huge bags of frozen Green Beans (35.3oz each) – $3.78
1 large can Chicken Breast – $1.55 (I buy canned chicken at Aldi to use on salads – but this price was significantly cheaper. I only bought one can so I could try it before buying a bunch)
1 pkg Hot Dog Buns – $0.59
1 12-oz bag 2% Mozzarella Cheese – $1.59
1 pkg Gluten-Free Baking Mix (Super excited to find a mix with only a few ingredients, all of which I can actually have right now in the middle of an elimination diet!) – $3.99
Total: $11.50
Grocery Total for the Week: $67.49
Weekly Menu Plan
(For those who don’t regularly follow my posts: I buy my chicken and beef in bulk from Zaycon. I usually only place/pick-up an order every few months. I have several orders coming up in the next 6 weeks, so if you want to see these bulk purchases – keep reading! Also, my husband is a hunter and generally gets 4 deer each hunting season. We eat a lot of venison. 🙂 All of the meat in my meal plan this week – other than the bacon – will come from the stash in my freezer.)

Our Lidl will pie this year and I can’t wait! Can’t ou share your venison roast recipe? I want to make my roast this week but don’t know what recipe to use! Thanks!
Brigette Shevy says
I don’t use a recipe for the roast. I just throw and dump things in my crockpot. 😉 Ha! I always put in the roast, a few tablespoons of butter or oil, a little bit of beef broth or water, and maybe 1/4 cup of soy sauce or braggs liquid aminos. Then I add spices – fresh or powdered garlic, fresh or powdered onion, black pepper, and whatever else inspires me when I look at my spice cupboard. 🙂 We like it cooked on low for 6-8hrs (it will take longer if the meat isn’t thawed ahead of time). After it’s cooked for a few hours, I add carrots and sometimes potatoes/onions and continue cooking. I also cut any larger chunks of meat into smaller pieces to help the meat not be tough. Hope this helps!

I just heard about Lidl a couple weeks ago, but there aren’t any near me, in IL.
Would be fun to check one out. Around us, where there is a Ruler Foods, the Aldi and Walmart have more competitive prices, to try to match Ruler’s prices. I was looking at your prices for milk/eggs and where we are in central IL, milk and eggs have been super cheap for awhile. Prices are just starting to come back up now. For at least a year, I could find eggs for less than $0.25/doz and milk for around $0.90/gal. Eggs are now $1+ doz and milk $1.50+gal. I know it’s not a lot in the grand scheme of things, but it’s a pretty significant price jump!! Last week I got a case of 5 dozen eggs for $2 total–5 days later, the same case of eggs is $5!

Eggs and milk have gone up for us, too. But they were NEVER as cheap as yours were – I think that’s the cheapest I’ve heard of them being! I haven’t heard of Ruler Foods…I just might google it out of curiosity. 😉

Wow. In Columbus OH, I rarely find regular eggs for less than $.99 or milk for less than 1.48. We have multiple Save-a-lot, Aldi, Walmart, Kroger, Giant Eagle, Meijer, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Fresh Thyme, international grocers and Targets here also sell groceries.

We love Lidl !! It is new to our area (Gastonia NC). Great Bakery. NIce produce. Great prices.

Your menu looks delicious. I love Aldi. My goal was $30 for a family of 5 this week. I spent $32 and bought: bananas, 3 gallons milk, bologna, turkey bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, grapes, russet potatoes, red potatoes, baking cocoa, chocolate chips, sugar, a can of tomato paste, pickles, tortillas, and 3 lbs of ground turkey. It is rare that I buy this much ground turkey, but we will need it for a burgers and fries dinner, vegetable “beef” soup, and a pasta bake. I always have other food on hand so my weekly menus never come exclusively from what I buy that week. Tonight’s dinner was ham (left over and frozen from our Christmas dinner), roasted red potatoes, and mixed veggies.

Wow! $30 is impressive!! Your menu sounds wonderful. Pasta bakes are one of my family’s favorites!

I haven’t got a Lidl yet, but I read in the Charlotte Observer last week that when a Lidl opens, the grocery prices in other stores will be lower than before a Lidl opened nearby.
Brigette Shevy says
That’s interesting! Maybe I need to go back in some of the stores I haven’t been to for awhile, now that we have a Lidl. 😉
